Bring 'Em Down

They were here. She had seen them. Two giant condor. How a land bound canine such as herself was supposed to catch two big, massive birds? She had an idea, but there was no saying whether or not it would work. Why was she after condors anyway? As a gift for Azure. He'd done very well in the raid and she would give the bird to the boy so that he could repair his armor when needed. Up above, she could see the birds roosting in a tall tree. They had come here because of the mass amounts of other birds, she believed. Easy targets. That was what her plan would rely on. She intended to injure one of the many swans that frequented the area. Once the condor came down to investigate, she would take them out. Or one, at least. The other would surely fly away when its companion was attacked. If she'd brought another with her... this could have gone off much more smoothly. "Speech" |

Wyndelin continued his exploration of the west, getting a feel for where everything was and trying to trigger his memory. Oh, why hadn't he paid more attention to geography? He found himself in a rich estuary full of all kinds of birds and his stomach started to growl as he watched they flying about or scooping up small fish from the water. He wasn't sure how he was going to catch birds. The biggest bird he'd ever managed was a turkey and they weren't so quick to flight. Sensing another's presence he saw an older woman eyeing a pair of condors up in the tree. He moved toward her, clearing his throat quietly before speaking in a hushed tone. "Excuse me, m'am, are you hunting birds by chance? I'm in need of a meal myself, for my travels." "Talk" |

Ears perked as pawsteps sounded from behind her. The one-eyed woman turned her head a bit farther than most would have to to see the approaching form. A young man approached and questioned her. Resin spared a grin and a nod. "Indeed I am, but not for the same reasons." With a pull of her skull, she motioned for him to come close. With her voice a low, raspy whisper, she introduced herself and explained. "I'm Resin." Again she motioned, this time to the giant black birds up in the tree. "I'm hoping to collect those wings for my grandsons armor." Getting them down would be the trick. "I plan to lure them down with an easy meal of swan. If you help me get the condors, you'll definitely have enough meat for travel." Casting her single sulfur eye towards the earthen wolf, she asked. "Interested?" "Speech" |

The older woman introduced herself as Resin and she had a rather curious reason for hunting. She wanted the wings to create armor for her grandson. Wyndelin didn't know much about creating armor but that wasn't really a surprise as he'd never taken much of an interest in the warrior arts. He had been forced to go through some training as a boy, but he was swift to conclude that it just wasn't for him. "That sounds like a good plan, count me in. I'll take cover so as not to spook them." He slipped away into the underbrush. His pelt was made for hunting. The deep earthen color blended in well amongst the earth and the trees. He shifted and got himself settled, legs coiled beneath him in anticipation. "Talk" |

With the young wolf on board, Resin nodded. He crept off and she did as well. Birds weren't terribly smart. Yes, they were clever at times, but they had nothing on wolves. She had already killed the swan. Now she grabbed it by the neck and placed it at the center of the clearing, not trying to hide her appearance from the birds up above. They were too distracted with one another anyway. With her sharp teeth, Resin ripped open the body cavity of the swan, laying it open like a feast for the black birds above. Only then did she hide herself in the brush. If she took one condor and the other wolf took the second, they could get this done with quickly. Hunkered down in the brush, she waited for the giant black bird to come down for their free meal. After a time, stirring in the branches above brought Resin's sulfur eye upwards. The birds had noticed their meal. One leaped from the branch, circling downwards to land upon the carcass. They only had to wait for the second. "Speech" |

Wyndelin held perfectly still as he waited, his dark earthen pelt seeming to melt into the shadows. He watched quietly as Resin tore into the swan and then placed the bait. Patience was integral to hunting and the duo waited until at last one of the condors glided down and began to feast. The second bobbed its head, gazing down at the kill and its fellow before taking off into the air and gliding down as well. The great bird landed next to the kill and started ripping into it. Wyndelin waited a moment more for the birds to get comfortable before he leapt out toward the nearest condor. Wyndelin seized the birds throat, his chest colliding into its back as he flattened it down into the ground. It flailed and struggled, its large wings flapping violently. For a moment Wyndelin feared he was going to be airborne. He held on for dear life, knowing that the beak and talons of this bird could seriously wound him if he slipped up. "Talk" |

With the bait in place and their quarry distracted, the time had come to do what they were here to do. The young wolf dove from cover first. His jaws latched around the long, wrinkly neck of the bird. It flapped and squawked, but she couldn't watch the show. It was her turn.
The second condor took to the air and Resin had to take a running jump to reach it. Teeth snapped into its tail feathers. A few came off in her mouth, but the action was enough to bring the bird to ground. Bird and beast clattered to the earth. The condor tried to take off again, but she was on it. It continued to try and flap, but she soon had her jaws around its throat.

Wyndelin bit down hard, shifting his jaws up more to be sure he was getting at the vitals of the throat and not just clamping down in a useless spot. The bird continued to struggle but he noticed that its movements were getting weaker until at last it perished under his fangs. Wyndelin left go and licked at the blood that lingered on his teeth. This would be a good meal and an exotic one. He'd never eaten one of these birds before and looked forward to the meal. He turned toward Resin to see how she was doing before he started digging into the bird's chest cavity. She'd mentioned something about making armor and if she wanted this bird's wings as well she was welcome to them. Wyndelin just wanted a meal and the wings would barely be worth the effort for the scraps of meat. "Talk" |

The bird struggled fiercely, but with its neck between her jaws, its fight was short. Serrated teeth snapped through the hollow bones and the head practically came off in her mouth. Spitting the bird from her maw, Resin watched its last weak tremors before it gave in to death. Carefully, she worked her teeth around the upper joint in wing and shoulder. With force and finesse, she managed to tear the wing off entirely. This process was repeated with the second wing. "Well done," she said to Wyndelin as she approached his condor. "I just need the wings. Everything else is yours. The swan as well." He would be eating well for days. Popping the wings off of the second avian, Resin wrapped them in a hide that she'd brought. "My grandson will be able to repair his armor and have extra when needed. Thank you for your help." The one-eyed woman gave a polite nod. Reflecting on the whole ordeal, she found it odd that she had claimed Azure aloud as her grandson. It was a first for her, but not entirely an unwelcome statement. |

Wyndelin nodded and stepped back so Resin could strip the wings. "Thank you as well. I appreciate the extra meal greatly." He tipped his head toward the swan. He'd pack away as much fuel as he could for the journey ahead farther into the west where the terrain was more arid and food less plentiful, at least a good portion of the area. There were oases when one knew where to look but he didn't quite trust his memory at this point. Wyndelin ripped into the body cavity of the condor and started snarfing down what meat he could. He hadn't realized how hungry he was getting til the taste of blood hit his tongue. -end?- "Talk" |
