Was it just her, or was it getting colder? The stream was frozen over, and even the spring, which never froze over, was beginning to grow sluggish and crystalline. It made for a nice morning drink, but often Paladin and the primates had been forced to heat stones and drop them into the spring to thaw it.

Aurielle pressed on a stone in the wall and frowned as the frozen mortar crumbled and the stone plopped out of sight into a drift. The cold was making the wall crumble. And there was no real hope of repairs being any use until the cold broke, or the mortar wouldn’t set right.

Dry stacking might have some merit after all, if they could shape the stones right. Ardyn’s nimble paws might be able to do it somehow, like the primates had done to carve hooks into the cave walls for curtain rods to hand pelts over the alcoves. Those heavy pelt curtains were becoming a boon with the cold sinking in lately.

She hummed to herself as she moved on, thoughts flipping through various plans as she went on about her patrol, ears warmly covered by her cloak hood. It was a pleasant afternoon, all things considered, and she considered whether to have Cairo call the War Circle for some good-natured group sparring as she scanned the freelands beyond the wall.
