Modesty almost couldn’t remember what the sun looked like. Not that it worried her terribly. She had grown fascinated with the fireflies, and it was following another trail of them that had led her up the narrow winding path. Gilgamesh was with her of course. At first she had been as chatty as ever, but now she had a faraway look on her face, as if she had been hypnotised by the dancing lights ahead of her, leading them onwards, and upwards.
She thought she heard… a voice? But that couldn’t be right, it must have been a trick of the wind, surely. A ghostly giggle sounded by her ear where another firefly floated and a deep feeling of dread welled up in her stomach, but she couldn’t bring herself to stop, or to turn around. There it was again, a voice just beyond earshot. The longer it went on, the less she could keep telling herself it was just the wind.
"Did you hear that?" She questioned Gilgamesh, still unable to stop her paws from their incessant march onwards, and upwards. She couldn’t keep the worry from her voice.

While the world around them became stagnant, with the moon hanging in the air as their only light, Gil and Modesty had decided to go for a walk. In the sky above, the stars streaked like someone had stuck their paw in paint and dragged it across. He didn't like how this was going. Why didn't the sun rise at dawn as usual? Surely, winter wasn't taking this much of a toll on Boreas? His nerves buzzed constantly as he listened to Modesty chatter in her usual banter. For the most part, Gil would nod or add an occasional comment, but he'd rather listen to her ramble. Until she wasn't talking anymore. Lost in thought, highly aware of how the blue bugs (if they were bugs) danced around them, he finally realized that she too had gone silent. Worried, he turned his yellow eyes over to her starry coat. Somehow they had ended up in the mountainous region where tall crags touched the stars. The snow crunched loudly beneath their paws as he looked ahead of their path. It went up, and up, and up, and up some more. Where was she taking them? Where were they taking them? In a normally barren landscape, sprouts of crystals popped up, glowing softly with an ebb of light as if they breathed. That was unusual. Everything was unusual. Gilgamesh... The whisper made him start. Ears pulling up quickly, his face turned left and right as he looked for the whisper. His own worry creased his brow as Modesty's whisper broke his concentration. "Hear what?" Gil wasn't quick to admit he'd also heard something. Around them, the blue fireflies danced back and forth, leading ahead of their path and around a corner. "Where are we going?" He asked, hesitant to find out the answer. event inventory: 3 crystals |

When Gilgamesh asked what she was hearing, her head cocked to try and catch the noise more clearly. "It sounds like whispers…" She responded quietly. "I can’t quite make out what they’re saying though…" She still hadn’t ceased her movement, eyes looking forward to see the trail of fireflies leading up, and up, winding along the same route as the jagged, snow covered path they were following. It was only now that she thought to look back, realising just how far they had come.
Modesty’s tail waved at the wonder of it all, "I want to see where they go!" she declared, gaining a pep in her step as she bounded forward with more enthusiasm, watching in as the cloud of bugs swarmed and settled again, back into the places they had been before. "C’mon!" she encouraged, ending with an oof as one of her paws went straight through the snow bank and out into open air below, her chest colliding with the ground as she almost toppled over the open edge.

Distracted by the nagging whispers of the fireflies, Gilgamesh doesn't notice how far they've gone. The wind whistled by them as they continued their ascent up the mountainside. Snow began to drift around them in dangerous flurries, covering the precarious path they walked. Over the gales, Gil could barely hear her whisper, but figured she agreed with what they were both hearing was a faint whisper. Pulled forward by a mysterious force that drew them farther and farther ahead, he smiled a moment as she commanded him to keep following. His smile quickly disappeared as suddenly Modesty was falling beneath the snow. His eyes widened in fear as his heart dropped through his chest. "Modesty!" He called out, body shaking from adrenaline and chill. What was he supposed to do? Knowing he had to save her, he carefully picked his way closer to her before she could fall any farther. Reaching out to grab her backend, right at the top of her tail, he pulled back with as much force as needed to save her from falling. |

Modesty’s chest was against something solid, one paw dangling in the open air. She could have scooted back if her eyes hadn’t been looking straight down. There was a tightness in her chest and the smile had been wiped clean off her face. Her stomach was protesting and she wasn’t sure if she was going to vomit or poop herself with fear.
There was a pressure at the base of her tail that bought her back to earth and she was overcome with a different sort of panic. She couldn’t poop on the wolf that was trying to save her! Again! She shuffled her weight back from the edge, face burning as she found her balance again, breath short and body shaking against she forced an unsteady smile onto her face. "Thanks Gil, you saved me again!" Now get away from my butt! It’s dangerous down there right now! she wanted to scream, but couldn’t bring herself to voice the words.
Up, she had to get up! The fireflies were floating around her, although whether it was in annoyance that she had stopped or concern, she wouldn’t hazard a guess. Rising onto her feet again, and stepping closer to the rising cliff face, she gave herself a shake, the whispering and giggles more insistent now, the trail of fireflies growing thicker. "We better see what they want!"

As soon as he had latched on, he felt Modesty begin to scramble back. Not wanting to be run over, again, by the larger girl, Gil quickly back up his own body and let go once she was safely on solid ground. "Please be more careful," he chided in his low rumble, eyeing the excited girl with care. Now that they were both not trying to topple over the cliff, he could hear the whispering again. It was more urgent this time as if they were on a schedule. Folding his ears back, he only nodded to Modesty as she insisted they keep going. "Lead the way," Gil grumbled, beginning to regret allowing her to lead him up all this way. Sighing softly, he shook his head, hoping the incessant whispers would stop. Wrinkling his nose for a moment as he fell back in step behind her, he kept his eyes ahead of them so that he could try to spot any more dangerous and hiding holes. "Let's hope they show us what they want sooner than later," he huffed under his breath as he nipped at a firefly who had been dancing too close to his cheek. |

As they rounded the next corner on the narrow path, the trail seemed to stop. Modesty glanced about, this way and that. Sure, there was a really nice view from up here… or there would be if there was sunlight at least. The fireflies bobbed lazily, distant whispers now silenced… or were they. She wasn’t really brave enough to get close to the edge again now, but did lay down and scoot on her belly just a little bit closer to make sure she wasn’t missing something. "Well what was the point of that then? To scare me half to death?" She asked Gil with a smile. If nothing else, at least it was some sort of adventure.
