Was she going mad? Maybe a bit. Maybe a bit mad. Jack was okay with that though. A wanderer by nature, she was accustomed to taking far too much time on her own. There were too many thoughts in her head. She didn’t like any of them. Too much time just hearing her own voice, the way it echoed around in her head. Ick. Was that how she really sounded? God be damned, she really should get a parrot or something that could talk back while she was doing as she would.

A parrot or something that was a bit nicer to curl up with. A companion? Fuck, Jack could probably do with a wife. Maybe one day she’d settle down… or at least settle with the idea of dragging someone else around by her side. Who’d agree to that? A laughable concept. No, Jack was content to wander as she did, mostly on her own. Mostly, but not entirely. Not entirely content but doing her fucking best.

Jack knew that being alone was dangerous, but danger had never been an issue. Danger, you see, wasn’t really a big deal. No, the bigger issue? Jack knew what the issue was. Jack was fucking lonesome. She needed someone to walk by her side. Someone to keep the prideful, gorgeous blonde creature from getting ahead of herself. Not just ahead of herself, but into trouble. Jack being responsible for herself? That could only go badly. That could only go hella badly. Maybe it would help if she was at least a little responsible for someone else too.

She was fairly deep in her own head as she made her way across the ground, long legs and long steps. At least Jack had that going for herself. The shadow she cast in the late afternoon was long. Long shadow, long legs, long steps. Maybe she was cocky– no, Jack was absolutely cocky. Most certainly cocky. And she didn’t care to do anything to change that. Change was the enemy, and Jack wouldn’t take that. Fuck change. Fuck changing, Jack was above it.

Out of seemingly nowhere, something hit Jack like a freight train. She went down. Off of her own four feet, the sandy creature tumbled. It knocked the breath from her lungs, and for a very long moment, she had no idea which way was up. Everything hurt, and she was left flailing and gasping. Gasping for air. What the absolute fuck had just happened? The antihero took a long moment to process all of it. Willing the breath back into her lungs was certainly a process, one she didn’t know how to really… how to really think about. Ow.

What ever hit her had hit and quit, and Jack was deeply unsettled. A growl resonated from deep in her chest before she could even think to stop it. Crouching low, head and chest low to the ground, Jack was an absolute menace. Her teeth glinted in the afternoon sunlight, glimmering, and she was unbridled intensity. Sandy hackles up around her shoulders, protecting her neck. Blood oozing slowly from her cheek, and she could feel the heat from that blood as it dripped. Fucking nasty.

Her head swung wildly, gaze scanning for just what hit her. From the shallows of the Rio Grande, Jack could see it. The thing that had tried to best her, but hadn’t grabbed on… why hadn’t it grabbed on? A lizard– crocodile, alligator, the specifics didn’t matter. Even at this distance she could see crystals growing on the creature. Fucking nasty. They were mossy green, growing like a fungus from what appeared to be… were those open wounds? No wonder that fucker was in a bad mood.

Before Jack could fully right herself, the lizard was coming towards her again. Quickly, she rushed it in turn. Unchained and reckless, Jack lashed out. She was snarling. Faster, so much faster than the dinosaur of a creature. The sandy girl threw her head back and laughed as she went for the eyes, leaping to pounce on it. Right, go for the eyes first, that would keep her safe.

And that she did. Jack felt the heavy lash of tail against her, but she didn’t care. It wasn’t enough to stagger her again. No, the woman was able to make a run at the reptile, using her teeth to swiftly blind it. That would keep her safe… safer than she had been. Springing on it, taking away its vision, and then moving back. Jack was still catching her breath from being blindsided after all. Okay, now we go again. And yes, she would go again. She’s reckless as she re engages.

The throat. Jack needed the throat. That was going to be the way to take it out, to destroy it. She swept in, taking the aquatic creature by the head. No, that wasn’t what Jack wanted. Huh, that was strange. Still, it was enough to roll it. The creature thrashed, making noises that were rather unsettling. Jack can feel the scraping of its rough hide against her, but she doesn’t let it go. Nothing can be done to shake her free, not at this point. There’s too much ferocity, too much brilliance, too much terrible and wonderful energy.

There it was. The throat of the creature in her mouth. Jack makes quick work of it, not wanting to draw things out. From thrashing to perfectly still in just moments, and she was safe again. Holy fuck that thing was brutal. That was fine, though. Jack was just as brutal. In the summer sun, blood stained her blonde pelt. The mark of a job well done, covered in the blood of another predator. Red, brilliant red, spreading around her in the river.
