Surreal padded into the den, poking her head into the alcove to peer at her younger son, who, if he had obeyed his grounding, was on probation as of three, two, one.. ”Alright. You can come out now, little love. I have a treat for you to see.” She pulled her head from the alcove, turning to head back out. Snow had fallen over the past few weeks, during the time her younger son had been grounded for sneaking out at night. She remembered the first time she had ever seen snow.
She descended the steps and waited for her boy to come out, anticipating his reaction to the white stuff that had filtered through the gap in the ceiling of the ravine. A bark summoned Baine as well. Today was one for fun and games, and snow.
Well, he'd certainly learned what a 'grounding' was, and he decided it was probably the worst, most boring punishment ever. There was so much out there he didn't know about still. How was he supposed to learn Mule Deer Language cooped up in the den? He wanted to learn to hunt like Regulus and learn plants from Zuriel like Dadaí, not lounge around in forced isolation from all the fascinating things out there. But Mamaí had told him he had to stay put, and so he stayed put...
But then his máthair called out to him inviting him to come out, and no sooner had she finished the words 'you can come out now', the chubby puppy burst out of the mouth of the den like a rocket, only to stop dead in his tracks. Wow! His first long trek from the den, when he found the mule deer, there'd been a light dusting of cold white stuff on the ground but this! The white stuff had completely covered everything with a glittery, shimmery blanket and completely changed the way the world looked. For the moment he could only stand silently, staring out across the snow-covered plain.
