This place was his favorite [Deadman’s Scrap]. He didn’t know exactly what it was, where it was, or even that it had a name, but he liked it! There was so much stuff. Sparkly stuff here, floaty stuff there. Some things hurt, some didn’t. Some made you bleed. He liked that, and didn’t like it at the same time. Either way, he always had a fun time whenever he managed to come across the place. It was where he had first found the crinkly.
He recognized the place once he saw the blurred edges – the fading reach of garbage. His kind of treasure, of course. Bits of unidentifiable things rolled and drifted like tumbleweed in the warm breeze. The ground was speckled with anything and everything and some of it sparkled. The gremlin – very much like a magpie – had a keen eye for shiny things. While he wasn’t particularly good at collecting (he generally forgot where he stowed things, and often left them behind when he got tired of carrying them) he at least could enjoy the things he found for the time that he had them.
When he approached the trash deposit, he noticed someone else there, just up ahead. The beastling stretched his neck, gawking with wide, ghastly eyes and an open mouth. They looked tiny! Like him! Maybe even smaller – it was hard to tell from a distance. Immediately interested, he scampered over, only managing not to prick his feet by some stunning (and usually scant) luck. He stopped several yards away, stretching his neck again like an anxious meerkat. The wolf was white and brown and black, and looking at their foot, or something near it for reasons he couldn’t see. Hmm. What to do. He tended not to think his problems all the way through though – resorting instead to spontaneous inclinations. He was an artist of the mind with visions of crimson Pollock pieces splattered across his psyche! So, he would indulge in his fine art of doing whatever the hell he suddenly felt like, and scream loudly and discordantly over at the stranger, ”Heeeeee-lloooo-ooo!”
He did not have a pretty voice.
