He could smell the metallic stench from a mile away. He grew up near a similar area, with wounded earth and strange artifacts decaying in the soil. The smell was absolutely acrid and his soul felt a deflated, wrung-out pain when he stepped foot in the area. Yet he couldn't explain why his paws continued towards the dead earth. The sun was beginning to rise and the warming terrain was feeling good, if not a bit chilly. He couldn't sleep much lately - some nightmares plagued his thoughts and he was struggling to feel like his normal self.
His aunt told him stories about humans she heard from the elders, about the hairless creatures who used the metals as armor and had a tool that could blast a wolf away in the blink of an eye. They sounded like awful creatures; he felt uncomfortable even being near where they had been before.
He sniffed the soil, and mixed with the faded scents of wolf, he clearly smelled blood and fear. How awful.
