Not just any bamboo stalk would do. It had to be thick and sturdy enough to withstand the weight and impact of something landing on it, but would also need to splinter a little to inflict as much damage as possible. The taller structures that formed the Maze's walls were out of the question and Hattori had little interest in dragging bamboo throughout the whole territory, so he skirted around the sides of his land, head tilted up as he examined what he had to work with.  

Perhaps it was not a job he ought to undertake alone, but he imagined someone would pass by soon enough and offer a helping paw. Till then he dragged along his sack of equipment, sharp blades and saws along with tools to aid digging when it came to it.
