After receiving the honourable rank of Commander, Mercury knew he had a lot of work to put in before he really felt worthy of the position. He wasn't shy about hard work, and after he left Artorias, he started to put together a plan. First, he would look at the general knowledge of fighting the warriors had, and then he would look at pack security and patrols.

With that in mind, he made his way to the courtyard of the pack’s castle, and raised his head. Howling to the warriors of the pack. Especially those that felt they needed more experience.
