The summer heat was worse than ever in the early morning, especially when the sun hit the proper points in the sky. Pretty soon, the seasons would be changing again, giving summer the perfect opportunity to shine at its best. For the wolves of Valhalla, the summer's best was the worst. Odette had been trying to stay in the shade, avoiding any contact with the golden god that spit out heat hour after hour. When her and Chrysanthe had returned to the Plains, Odette had chosen a den surrounded by trees and a water source nearby. She didn't share a home with Chrysanthe anymore, but they were neighbors and it was enough to make the Epsilon happy.
For some reason or another, Odette decided to brave the heat that morning. After debating on whether it would be worth the risk of heat stroke, she had left the comforts of her cool den to embrace the summer sun. Immediately after leaving, she wished that she hadn't. Rather than go back in and sulk, Odette set out for the second best place to be: her water source.
Odette's frame was more muscle than fat as she briskly trotted towards the lake. Climbing mountains and rolling hills had built up the lean muscles that she had from puppyhood. With each day that passed, she was becoming more like her ancestors and hopefully, she was making them proud. Her red and blue eyes looked for the shining top of the lake as she got closer, intending to run straight into it. It didn't take long and before she knew it, her paws met the cool temperatures of the water.
Once the yearling was surrounded by the water, she dipped her head beneath the surface. She immediately opened her eyes and admired the underwater world. Paddling out towards the middle of the large body, she did a couple of spins before rising to the surface. Her nose broke from the water and hit air, welcoming it in with happy lungs happily accepting the oxygen. Nothing had ever felt so good!
As she went to turn back to swim to shore, she saw a swollen figure. Curiosity got the best of her and she paddled in the direction of the stranger. The closer she got, the more she realized that it was someone she knew. A smile appeared on her face as she felt the clay ground beneath her rise. She remained a foot away from Twig, for she didn't know if the female was still antsy about other wolves. Odette couldn't tell that she was pregnant, for her belly was hidden by the lake. "Twig? Is that really you?" was all Odette could say in bewildering astonishment.
