Agree on all of Di's points.

AW threads either get ignored, get overwhelmed, or turn into private threads because people don't want to interrupt a conversation that's already started. If it's your preference feel free to do it, but I think that it tends to be less effective than saying "Hey our wolves should meet up" and having that happen.

I do not think Metagaming a whole thread is good. I think saying "Hey our wolves should meet up and maybe chat about X" isn't so bad. I look at roleplaying like writing a story, and if I agree with someone else on where that story is generally headed I will go with it, but I always leave room for change and flexibility.

As for the private threads/real life comparison, you can have private conversations really anywhere you want. Most of the time, no one is interested in hearing what you have to say. If its something you want kept quiet, you find a spot away from other people. We've all been able to do this our whole lives, even in public. You can find ways not to be overheard and odds are, no one is going to come to interrupt you unless your BFF walks by. Most people will just walk on by. So I don't really have an issue with private threads anywhere, based on that.
