He padded forward slowly, nose to the ground, ears flicking and swiveling to catch the sounds ahead and behind. He was on the hunt, hares again. It was less for the meat, though that would be a bonus, and more for the pelts. Which meant being very precise.
He followed the scent trail all the way to a warren full of hare scents. He breathed in deeply, sniffing each opening and taking a count of the scents. My, but it would be a fair brace of them. Perfect. But how to catch enough to stock up on the soft hare pelts, and not damage them in the process?
He thought over the options, fixing on Red and his snares. Perfect. Now, how to make the snares…
Cairo backed his head out of the warren entrance he was examining and headed back to the alcoves, gathering supplies. An old hide that was best for strips of leather. His bear claw bracers would be fine for the cutting. Chrystal dozed on a perch in the wooded hillock, and he settled beneath her, preparing to make the snares he would need.

Eyes of blue rested in the vast extension of the plains that she could now call her home. For now the girl limited herself to just observe in the case a promising prey that could catch her attention. This was the perfect place for her to practice,if she wanted to be a great hunter she needed to work for it. And therein silence, she walked with nose planted in the soil, tail low and stealthy paws were placed with care to avoid stepping in anything that could betray her position. And there at the distance, she saw a male. There were many pack mates she still didnt know, all were unknown or not known enough. Lowering her neck she approached. "Hello, what are you doing?" She asked between whispers. The smell of rabbits were highly intense in the area."Need help?" She asked as she observed or tried to. |

Paw-steps, unfamiliar ones, approached, and he looked up at the soft voice, smiling easily at the girl. “I’m making snares to catch wily hares.” His unintentional rhyme came with an easy grin, tail thwapping softly at the ground as he scooted over.
“Sure, the more help the merrier.” He nodded at the hide as he pulled one of his bracers off and tossed it to the girl. “If you slide that onto your main using paw, you’ll be able to cut the hide better and with more control. We want to cut the hide into strips, like this;”
He put his bracered paw down on the hide and flexed his toes, the well-sharped bear claws puncturing into the hide. Like a cat with curtains, he drew his paw down and back, pressing his weight down on the opposite end of the hide and leaving strips in the wake of the claws. It took some effort, but he came out with thin strips of leather.
“I’m Cairo Adravendi, Steadfast Seeker. I take it you must be Aslaug?” Aurielle had mentioned the newcomers during their training not long after accepting the four wolves into the pack. As yet, they were still ranked as Outlanders until Aurielle could test them and see what Circle they’d excel in. He'd met Elba while he was making Lia's armor, and he figured she'd be a great fit for the pack.

“I’m making snares to catch wily hares.” Her head tilted to the left to express her confusion regarding what a Snare was. And the need to ask soon took for in her chest. And Aslaugh was always asking about everything, and when her curiosity got high enough she could barely hold herself from asking, even if it was to strangers. "What is a snare?" She dropped the question politely despite the excitement that was starting to build. She approached to get a better look at the items.“Sure, the more help the merrier.” She smiled with a nod happy for being allowed to help the male. He then tossed stuff before her,her curiosity grew up a lot more. "What's this?" She asked with widened eyes.“If you slide that onto your main using paw, you’ll be able to cut the hide better and with more control. We want to cut the hide into strips, like this;” Suprise turned in happiness as she tried to do as suggested. Placing the stuff in her right front paw. And silently she watched what he did left, paying attention as those large claws punctured into the hides. Stripes of the hide were the results of his actions. "Are we using those for the snare?" “I’m Cairo Adravendi, Steadfast Seeker. I take it you must be Aslaug or Elba?” "Aslaugh Kvasir,a pleasure to meet you Mr.Cairo." She said smiling. |

Her curiosity was piqued as a question came out. He was more than happy to give an answer though tail tapping the ground as he said, “A snare is a sort of hunting tool. It’s a long, strong rope or cord made from leather, like we’re doing here, fibrous plants worked together, which is way easier for primates to achieve than us with our paws, or metal wire, but that’s hard to come by. You hang it in a loop along a rabbit trail, or even a deer trail, and attach the tail end to the top of a sapling pole.”
He sketched out the concept in the dirt with a bear claw. The diagram was a little sloppy, but it was legible and understandable… or he at least hoped it was. “The sapling pole is bent downward and fastened with a toggle that will pop loose with very little pressure or effort. The loop of the snare is held open carefully, and sometimes you put something tasty to hares on one side to encourage them to stick their heads through. When they disturb the loop or push through it with their front end, it shakes the loop loose and they might startle enough to pull the snare tight, and that jolts the sapling and releases the toggle.
“The sapling snaps upright again and the rabbit or hare – or whatever prey animal you’re trying to catch – dangles. It snaps the neck of the smaller animals, but holds something larger, like a small deer, still until you can come to dispatch it.”
At least, that was what he’d learned from Red and observing some of the Heart’s traplines before. He’d just have to see if they managed the same.
At her next question he chuckled softly. “It’s a bracer. Armor, and on mine I attached bear claws to be able to deal damage as well as deflect a bit to the forelegs.” He rose enough to mime swiping at an opponent with the paw that still wore a bracer.
He nodded at her next question for answer, creating more strips as he answered with a grin, “Nice to meet you, too.” He paused and pressed his weight down on the far end of the hide to make her attempt at making her own strips more effective.
He studied the strips he’d made then looked around at the wooded hillock for likely saplings. Logic said that if he wanted the snares to be super effective, he’d have to find a way to set up the snares closer to the warrens. Maybe next time he tried the lazy way, he could make nets. Braiding them together had been his original thought, but… wolf toes. Hm.

She paid attention as he made a sort of visual explanation on the soil, and as he was giving the respective information about what they were doing she felt highly excited to learn more.“The sapling pole is bent downward and fastened with a toggle that will pop loose with very little pressure or effort. The loop of the snare is held open carefully, and sometimes you put something tasty to hares on one side to encourage them to stick their heads through. When they disturb the loop or push through it with their front end, it shakes the loop loose and they might startle enough to pull the snare tight, and that jolts the sapling and releases the toggle." "Ohh I see," He later clarified how the snare worked to kill the target or hold it in place in the case of larger prey. "And for how long would it hold on until the hunter arrives? For larger prey would we need larger structures? Does it work with elk?" More questions she made as the more she heard him the more she felt interested in the subject. He later on described what the bracer was, showing his had bear claws to deal damage. "They look awesome! Are they hard to do?" She then paid attention to his next moves. Seeing how he used the strips. She didnt say anything else, she just wanted to observe and after that she could ask. |

She seemed willing to listen and learn as he explained and demonstrated. At her question he smiled thoughtfully, then shook his head. “For elk and bison, it might work better to dig a big, deep pit and put sharped spears in the bottom pointing up. It’ll kill or injure them when they fall in. But I’ve never tried that . This is actually my first time making snares… and trying them.”
He laid out three strips of hide, long enough that plaiting them would leave plenty of length to be usable. “Now, if you hold the ends of these in your front teeth and clamp down hard, we can try braiding these together into a cord. If it works, I’ll hold the next set so you can try.”
He pointed out the ends, head cocking toward her in invitation.
“The bracers took a few hours to make, but I was chatting with Nolan and he helped, so it was fun. Making armor is pretty fun regardless, but that day I made a new best friend.”

This is actually my first time making snares… and trying them.” It sounded epic ,she didnt know one could use a pit for the kill with sharp logs, she definitely wanted to try that out someday, though she will need the help, but from who? Would Cairo want to? Well as she didnt want to waste more of his time she decided to leave it for later. “Now, if you hold the ends of these in your front teeth and clamp down hard, we can try braiding these together into a cord. If it works, I’ll hold the next set so you can try.” Slowly she approached and stopping by his side she watched what he was going to do. "Thanks!" She said happily as she sta down to observe.“The bracers took a few hours to make, but I was chatting with Nolan and he helped, so it was fun. Making armor is pretty fun regardless, but that day I made a new best friend.” "Sounds fun to do with others,i hope when i try making mine i have company too!" She wagged her tail slowly as she observed. She was really loving this day,she was both learning a new thing and meeting someone new. |

He smiled encouragingly at her as she approached, and began carefully working the strips together in a standard braid, occasionally tugging to tighten it. Soon he realized that it would be easier to get them knotted by a primate and hook the knot into a tight crack in a tree trunk, but he kept at it until they had a long cord.
“Your cousin Nolan was my first best friend. Also the first wolf I met in the pack who was around my age who wasn’t also my sibling.”
He chuckled then motioned for her to drop the new cord once he clumsily, but tightly, knotted the end in such a way that it could be looped. Once tightened down far enough on a prey animal’s neck, he hoped the cord would stay tight and strangle what didn’t get a snapped neck from the sapling recoil.
He took the ends of his cord in his front teeth, biting down hard, and sat up, gesturing for her to try her paw at braiding the three strips of leather into a cord.

As the yearling observed with great interest Cairo's actions, she was forming several questions in her mind. She was well known for pestering adults with questions, this side of hers was taken from her parents and sometimes there was no room for regrets in her mind when she asked. But this time she felt like there was no problem with Cairo, after all she was working and doing this for someday having a spot in the ranks, any was fine with her.She just wanted to be a hunter and provide for the pack, this has been her dream of a lifetime after all. Then he spoke about her cousin Nolan, and how they were Cairo's first companion in the arts of hunting and pack life in general. It sounded soo exciting that herself wanted such buddy for her own hunts, but she didnt wants to rush things despite how tempting it seemed. Maybe someday she will. For now, she wanted to focus on her skills. As soon as he gave her the motion she dropped the cord. Later on she approached as he again pointed her what to do with the sight. And this time she took the leather stripes and started to try to make of them a cord, repeating what Cairo did and at the end she made one but wasnt too sure about i,it seemed different from his,it seemed a bit narrower. "Like this?..." She asked doubtingly. |
