Our Salve-ation [Healer's Circle]
Loose deadline [5-31st-2020]
Paladin 'Knight' Ancora |
[Set before Cai’s fall off the mountain]
He sat out in the widest area of the ravine; his supplies spread out on a buckskin. Several sets of mortar and pestles were arrayed, along with various herbs, honey, and other things for salve making. With the influx of wolves who double as healers, he had enough to have a full group lesson going.
Everyone would benefit from today, and so he howled for the Healer’s Circle and waited, tail flipped over his paws as he sat on the sandy ground, watching the ravine with those eyes so like his mother’s. Hopefully, they would come quickly, and the lesson wouldn’t be disrupted by those thinking they could pick and choose what things they would learn. A healer might specialize in one facet, but they should always have a well-rounded education. One never knew what they might encounter where their services would be needed.
Kayode and Ime sat to one side, occupying themselves with prep-work unrelated to the lesson, gathering water to boil over the fire for teas.

She might not have been a healer, but she always would enjoy sitting in on the group lessons when they were called. She’d been napping when the gentle howl rolled through from outside. It didn’t take much to wake her, and with a few stretches and a yawn she padded out of the cave mouth and moved to the spring pool for a deep drink before she moved to sit off to the side.
“What are they learning today, Paladin?” Her eyes roved the supplies spread out before him, noting some of the herbs with interest. “Wound salves?”
She smiled as he nodded, and straightened her shoulders with another stretch, clearing the last of the nap from her eyes and watching the ravine to see who would be first to arrive.
Walk ---- "Speak" ---- "Labhair an Sean-Teanga." ---- "Hear" ---- Think |
At first glance, Aurielle's coat is pure white.. Her fur has an iridescent quality (like moonstones) where the fur shimmers different colors under various angles of light: in this case, the colors shown by rainbow moonstones. Not one hair on her hide is a solid unnatural color, but, ya know, it's really hard to convey that in still art :P
Aurielle's English is heavily laden with an Irish, Swedish mixed accent.
Her family is allowed to crash all her threads, Private and Open.
As of Autumn Year 14, Aurielle glows with a bright blue-white bio-luminescence in her fur, and bears a marking over her left eye - see profile and reference.
"Aight then Liz you best go sit down and get ready for the lesson." Ben chirped as he flapped his wings. Liz laughed a bit and nodded her head. Giving the teacher some space before she sat down and took a look around. So who would show up then? To give her some time to learn something new about how these lands healers worked. She stayed patiently quiet with her bird companion.
She wasted no time at all, immediately turning and bounding towards where Paladin had called from to arrive with fluffy tail wagging and green eyes shining. "Hi everyone!" she burbled happily to Aurielle, Paladin, the stranger, and the companions.
She was thrilled to spend some time training with her new pack and get back into the groove of sharpening her skills. Training and learning were things that she and Ochre truly tried to instill the importance of into their daughters, but she always believed in walking the walk if she was going to talk the talk. Now that they were starting to get settled in it was now the time to start introducing herself and her family to the rest of the pack and see how she could help share her knowledge and learn from her fellow healers as well. Pretty much everything she knew was what she learned from her mother so she was excited to see what other techniques she could pick up today and in the days that followed. Daelos led Elba toward the group that had already gathered, her dual-toned blue gaze scanning over them with a warm smile. "Hello, everyone," she said in greeting, settling onto her haunches. Of course the only wolf she had personally met from this group so far was Aurielle so now seemed like as good a time as any to introduce herself. "I'm Daelos and this is one of my daughters, Elba," she said with a small motion of her head toward her energetic, head strong girl. She chuckled softly and turned her attention to the supplies that the leader of their training had gathered, extremely curious about what it was they would be learning. |
Elba didn't really know what to expect from a big group training like this. Pretty much all of her healing training had been one on one with her mother and briefly with her grandmother before she passed so learning in a group like this was pretty new to her. Some of the training she had done for fighting had been in groups, but even then they were usually paired off for spars so that ended up being smaller groups all the same. She was excited and curious and nervous, but mostly just eager to get started. It was really hard to keep pace with her mother as they went to join the group instead of just running ahead to get there faster. The young woman gave everyone a big, excited grin when they finally got there and Daelos said hello to everyone and began introducing the two of them. "Hello!" she added happily before sitting back on her haunches as well beside her mother with her ears perked forward eagerly. She curiously eyed all of the supplies in front of them, some she had seen before and some she hadn't. There was still a lot for her to learn, but she was still pretty proud of what she did know considering how young she still was. She wanted to start asking what stuff was right away, but she kept her mouth shut and tried to be polite and wait for the training to progress on its own. |

Aurielle came out from the caves and he smiled back at her, nodding as he gestured at the array. Kayode went back in the caves, and returned with a set of tortoise shells, each heaped with hot coals, spread on a platter of wood. As the first student arrived, Elizabeth, the monkey set out the tortoise shells beside each mortar and pestle set.
Paladin smiled smoothly at the young woman bubbled at him, then remarked lightly, “I believe I was expecting you for a lesson. Was something amiss that you could not find me?” A black shrouded brow-point flicked upward with interest as she took her place. Ime set one of the sets of mortar and pestles before the Adravendi woman, along with a fire-filled tortoise shell, adding a few shaving s of wood and small sticks to keep the coals alive and hot.
Viviane was next, and his smile spread into a gentleness for his young apprentice. He’d have to take her out for an herb gathering lesson soon, or when spring brought out new growth, though recognizing the winter-forms of the plants they used was a useful skill. “Hello, Viviane How are you this day? Justice,”
He smiled lightly at his sister as she arrived. Brusque, blunt, she introduced herself and he added, “You should like this lesson better than the last one, I think.”
Before Viviane and Justice were placed more of the sets, and soon before two more, the last to arrive. Daelos and Elba. Two of the cousins that had recently joined. There were two others, but their skills lay elsewhere.
His eyes scanned down the ravine, and when it was clear no others would be coming, he straightened as Ime and Kayode set his mortar and pestle before him to his left, and the tortoise shelf of coals to his right.
"Lá maith, gach duine." The Old Tongue flowed from his lips as he smiled at the gathered women. In fact, apart from Kayode and Ime, he was the only other male in the group, not counting the bird that came with Elizabeth.
“Thank you for coming, and to those of you who are new to our extended family – our pack – welcome. I am Paladin “Knight” Ancora. I am an Incandescent Courage.”
He lifted a paw, gesturing at the array of implements, herbs, and various fired claw bowls and jars spread out in obvious sets. “Before you lies our project and lesson—wound salves. For the fighting-inclined of you, the salves we produce today will be something to carry with you when you go out to spar, or out to war.”
His eyes flicked over the wolves before him as he nodded to each item for them to see. “What plants do you recognize here? And can any of you identify the other substances? Do not be embarrassed or disheartened if you do not know an answer—you’re here to learn and practice. When you come away from this, you should know a lot more than you came in here knowing.”
List of items:
He sat back, smiling encouragingly to them as he waited to see what each might recognize, and if they might tell what some of the uses were.

Aurielle smiled softly as Paladin nodded, and as each woman arrived, she nodded to each of them. As the introductions were given, Aurielle added to Elizabeth and Viviane, “Viviane, Elizabeth is one of your cousins by blood. I’m glad to have the chance to introduce you two.”
She smiled lightly, then grinned at Daelos and Elba. “I hope you’re settling in well, Daelos, Elba.”
She stepped back then, letting Paladin take over and listening as he spoke and showed the healers what he had for them, not missing the subtly, playful jab he threw at his sister, her own memory casting back to his first lesson, lips twitching faintly as the memory. Perhaps that was the reason Domari had chosen to become a hunter instead of a healer.
Her eyes cast down to her midriff, a softer smile on her features as she shifted the back of a foreleg to rest against the round of her stomach as she listened, glancing at the items Paladin showed the women, though she remained quiet. She was just there to watch and see how her healers fared, and be aware of where their skills were at.
Her eyes shifted to the women as she, too waited to see what they’d recognize.

"Water and the Raw Honey to start. Back home we'd use Raw Honey to help sore throats when a wolf was sick." Water was kind of a given. "Yarrow, Beeswax and Goldenseal are the only other ones I reckognize. Yarrow is usually used for minor bleeding wounds and to reduce fevers. Beeswax I'm not sure I just know what it is. Goldenseal can be used for inflammation and it's useful for infections as well." she finished this and looked to paladin all the more ready to learn with a wag of her tail.
Her eyes did light up when he got to the part about what they were going to be discussing, but rather than give him the satisfaction of seeing her excited about it she prominently examined and chewed at an overly long, cracked claw as though it wasn't that exciting. Her eyes flicked to the indicated stuff gathered, though, and she perused it. "Well," she said dryly, "I recognize the water." She did recognize more than that, though she couldn't resist the urge to needle her brother. It was close enough to accurate, though, because about all else she really, really knew was yarrow. Quite some time ago she'd spent a pleasant time picking the herb and learning from an elderly woman named Ara, and had learned some about it then. It was a fond memory. "It's never too late to start. We might change, but the plants never do," the old woman had said to her then, and the words had stuck with her. Yarrow was still one of the few herbs she could recognize both fresh and dried and had collected and dried it herself.
Caught by the memory, she didn't say anything more, and had nothing to add to what Elizabeth had said about yarrow, so she just listened quietly to what the other healer said about honey and goldenseal, marking each thing in her mind with the name as Elizabeth said it and spoke of it. Oh - now that she'd mentioned it she did know what honey was, and beeswax, though she didn't make it a habit to disturb bee hives so she hadn't really seen it to recognize it.
