One night Beau had fallen asleep to a world in winter and then, when the tom awoke, he found that the cattail creek had changed, now in a strange autumn setting across the lands. He stepped out of that den that morning to find that the skies were overcast. Gross… this was the sort of weather that he would definitely rather stay inside than deal with but… he'd already been lazing around the den he and Zakuma had. Still… small, rounded ears flicked back and his whiskers gave an uncertain twitch. With the skies as dark as they were they threatened rain…

Which wouldn't be great but at least he had acquired a set of defensive gear for the colder seasons that might protect him from light rain as well. All he had needed to do was put his hunting skills to the test for some merchant and he had earned himself a rather cute, warm red coat with a white trim. He scrunched down into the coat and smiled. The weather wasn't the greatest but at least he could still be warm. Ah what the hell, he might as well do some exploring today.

The tomcat moved into the autumn-touched lands of cattail creek. While the lands were stunning in autumn, his favorite season, he had no doubt the land was beautiful and covered in greenery in the summer… and it was likely a great fishing spot, too. His nose wrinkled at the thought. Fish were… they were just so gross, smelly, and just overall not good at all. Not even Zakuma liked them.

Padding over to the creek Beau sniffed at the reeds and plants that were there. They didn't smell bad but they definitely weren't as fragrant as flowers he'd found in other areas. His tail swished thoughtfully as looked at the cattails swaying in the breeze. Maybe he could eat one? Hmm…

Hazel eyes turned to look upstream. Dragonflies and the like we're fluttering around above the water. The tom twitched his ears. There was the faint chatter of birds above as well as the buzzing of the insects around him. The birds being chatty, rather than squaking in terror, was a good thing.

'...and if the birds feel safe enough to sing then there likely isn't any predators about.' Beau's heartbeat began to quicken. No predators around also meant that he was safe to check out the lands as well. In fact… this time the tom looked downstream thoughtfully.

Just like the path upstream, cattails stretched skyward and lazily swayed in the breeze. The whole of the area was touched by autumn and the majority of the plant life had taken on a withered brown color. Prey that was normally hibernating could be found scurrying about. Right now he had options for what he could do now. He could go hunting or even take the opportunity to explore more of the lands surrounding the creek.

"I'm sure I'll hate myself for this later…" Beau drew in a breath. Despite his handicap of being chunky he wanted to explore these lands. He sniffed the air, blinking slowly as a cold drop of water hit his nose. "Oh!" Beau breathed out in a gasp. "Looks like I'm going to have to contend with the weather."

Beau glanced over his shoulder back toward the den. 'If I hurry I'm sure I can make it back before Zakuma notices I'm gone. His hazel eyes narrowed thoughtfully. Drawing a breath the tom turned his attention back upstream.

First one step, then another, then another. The dried grass shifted under his paw with every step that he took. He could smell the rain in the air and knew that with that first drop more was going to follow shortly. His casual walking soon became a faster one before Beau broke into a run. The gait he took was slower than most but it was still clearly a run for the chunky feline.

A smile spread over Beau's muzzle as he ran alongside the creek. He could hear the buying of the water, saw trees and other vegetation as he ran by. Before long he began to pant. His breaths came out hard and fast, the tom pushing himself to go further than his normal limits and challenge his own personal best with a race against himself.

Every thud of his paws against the dead grasses could be heard as he pressed on. Soon a light rain began to fall and the cat was reminded why he left his birthplace. He loved seeing the world around him, loved being able to run through the lands without a care in the world. Free. He might not have been fond of the colder areas he ended up in but overall Beau wouldn't change it for the world. And besides, Beau could appreciate the beauty of winter.

He kept running.

He ran and ran and ran until his breathing became raspy and hard. His steps slowed until at last Beau came to a stop. He flipped his rear onto the ground with a heavy thud. 'There.' Beau thought to himself. He had done it. He had run the length of the path upstream, even going uphill somewhat… and he had done it alone.

A proud smile appeared on Beau's muzzle. That had to be a personal best! He puffed out his chest proudly before flopping all the way to the earth. He was hot now, panting as the rain fell around him. He closed his eyes, listening to the sound of the world around him.
