Kassander had put a lot of thought into this - probably more than it really needed. From the standpoint of an alpha it made sense. Despite his young age the events Sigmarr had gone through made him one of the most experienced warriors in the pack, and he was Kassander's brother. Who could he possibly trust more? But the healer, the big brother, wanted to wrap his younger siblings in soft cotton and keep them from all the dangers of the world. He was afraid of pushing Sigmarr too far too fast and undoing all the emotional healing he had done. He was afraid that he didn't fully understand how damaged Sigmarr might be and that giving him this rank might cause more harm to him than good.

But he was also lonely and frightened of what he needed to become. He was afraid of failing. Of letting down his siblings, and the members of Ebony, and the scores of wolves that he could be helping. He couldn't do it alone.

He didn't call Sigmarr to him like a supplicant before a king. No, Sigmarr was no common member of the pack to be ruled. He was an equal. So Kassander paced around the territory early in the morning, hoping to catch him before he actually left it or, failing that, to track him to where he might actually be. He didn't know where Sigmarr slept, or if he slept, but it was a pretty good bet it was as far from the bulk of the pack as possible, so Kass slipped out of the territory altogether to search the land Katja had once haunted. It was a good bet he'd find Sigmarr here at some point, or that Sigmarr would find him, and so he put nose to ground and set off to trace the cold scent of his brother.
