Katja stretched lightly, reveling in the feel. Old, yes, she was getting there, but her body had yet to betray her. Today she would need to take larger game to feed her growing children - already a season old and growing quickly, they needed more and more food. It was time to replenish their stores. The soft morning light filtered through trees fully leafed with summer, and anticipation sharpened her senses as she lifted her muzzle to sniff at the warming air. There had been a cow moose here recently with her young, but Katja dismissed them. She would need a larger group than she intended to call to take down an adult moose, and it was simply bad stewardship to kill a pregnant or nursing animal. Ah, there. Fresh deer-scent, a young whitetail buck who had traveled along this route less than an hour passed. At a wolf's pace it would not take long to close the distance between them. Even so, she could not take a buck deer alone so, as she'd known she would need to, she lifted her voice in an invitation for a couple pack members to join her in a hunt.

The call. A hunt call. Hell yeah! Stori kicked off, coming through the land at a brisk but not rushed pace. His legs were long and, after running through all that snow, well-muscled. After a moment, the young brute came to Katja's side, "Katja... er Drottin..." The boy looked away sheepishly. He wasn't exactly sure how to address her all the time. Stori licked his muzzle quickly, "A small hunt? I'm in." Stori went about sniffing down the prey Katja was after. He caught it's scent and looked back to the alpha, waiting for her to give the go ahead. He was pointedly on standby; alert, waiting. Whether more members showed up or not, Stori would await Katja's next command.

Cathaoir

The sound of the alpha's howl cut through Cathaoir's nap, his head lifting as he blinked his sleepy mint eyes. He had done very, very little since he had joined Yfir, he hadn't even interacted with this pack mates at all. He felt guilty for this fact, and raising to his paws he quickly made his way to Katja's side. When he got there he dipped his head slightly, eyeing the younger boy who was there already. He didn't even know everyone's names, it was just from the first meeting that he had even seen them all. With a sharp swallow, Cath made a vow to get to know his pack members better. He needed to establish an actual relationship with these wolves, wolves that he was supposed to protect and care for. And what had he done so far? None of it. He looked at Katja with an apologetic look in his gaze before he settled on his rump, waiting to see if more would join them.

Stori and Cathaoir both appeared at her summons, and Katja nodded to them both in approval. They were the strata of members she'd been hoping to draw - Stori as a student would do well to learn and practice such an important task, and Cathaoir as an unproven Karl would be called on to help to provide for the pack. She waited to see if any more would join them, but none came and it was not necessary for there to be more than the three of them anyway. She took a moment to compare the three of them, and to make a plan. She was by far the smallest of the group, and were they all three trained adults she would have been herding the prey - but the ambush wolves were at greatest risk, and an untrained yearling would be in great danger in that role. "Come," she told them both briskly, then opened into that ground-eating lope that wolves are so famous for, following along the scent-trail left by the young buck. He was quite young yet, no more than a winter old and not yet so wily as an older buck; he wasn't so blundering as a fawn but his track was clear and slow, easy to follow. They would not take long to catch up to him. "Stori, when we get close you will stop and wait. Cathaoir and I will swing wide around him," she told them. "We will take positions some distance ahead of him, and when we are in place you will drive him towards us. Stay well back of his hooves but drive him at a sprint. We do not want him to have time to notice us before the ambush. You may need to harass him to get him to move... barking, short charges. Remember that a deer that is not running is dangerous. If he stays on course we will come in from the sides and pull him down. You may join us then, but stay well away from his hooves. Even a downed deer can kill a wolf. Understood?" she asked of the two young wolves following her. She took another deep breath of the deer-scent, then asked of them, "What does the scent tell you of our prey?"

OOC: This teaching moment brought to you by Katja. I figure they can split off in the next round and then start the chase the round after. Shouldn't take too long.
