Teach a man to fish

She never really thought too much about having to adapt how she did things. Maybe it was because she grew up with her mother having to do the same thing for her blindness. It had been a normal part of her life from a young age so it was something that Etain did without thinking "If I had four legs I wouldn't have to do it this way" or "If I had four legs this would be easier". Both of those statements were completely truthful and were things she had thought from time to time, but in this case she was simply doing the best she could with what she had. The more time she spent on her own and having to assist her aging parents, she realized how much easier it was to catch fish than it was to chase down larger game. Movement wasn't an issue for the most part, but she couldn't say that she was incredibly agile or fast. That was what brought her here to the river. If she could just get a few good sized fish then she would be well off for a couple of days. She had left a few with her parents before she left, but she hadn't bothered to catch any for herself. She walked along the river bank until she found a portion of the wide expanse of water that seemed a bit more calm and easier to wade into. She stopped once the water was barely lapping against her stomach and turned to face the on coming current. No one had taught her how to fish so it had been a lot of trial and error mixed with a lot of failed attempts and being soaked in water. She stood perfectly still in the water, keeping her blue eyes peeled for any movement below the surface. |

The days had come and gone since Erlend set out on his journey; a journey in which he had hoped that he would be able to find himself. The trek alone had been quite, far from what the he was used too. Though the silence had given him the time to think over his decision, whether or not that it had been a good idea to leave and set out to find a new pack to call home or if he should remain as a loner and satisfy his need for adventure. Agile paws would carry him forth, his auburn colored gaze trailing the surface of the vast river that laid before him, its surface mirroring the cloudless blue sky above. Pressing on he would travel the flank of the river, long toes leaving subtle indention’s within the soft sediment beneath him. Thick legs would heed to a stop, long toes digging into the sand beneath him as he turned to face the waters. His singular gaze settling on the streamlined “v” of geese as they sang their amusing tune across the endless skies, their dark bodies finally disappearing over the distant peeks. Soot cloaked frame stood before the crystalline waters, his tail aloof behind him, as the stray wire like hairs that claimed his timbered coat fluttered softly in the slight breeze, the waters still surface fanning out in small ripples across the slow moving water. Pointed ears stood erect atop the beasts broad head as his inky nose trailed the breeze, it was sweet and almost as welcoming as the scent of wild flowers on a spring morning. But alas the bitter twinge of winter still laid heavily on the breeze, its last remaining chill enticing a slight shiver from him as the hairs along his spine rose. With a brisk shake Erlend would settle on the soft sand of the river bank, his thick plume like tail settling behind him as once again his pointed ears stood erect as he concentrated on the horizon, the midday sun glaring across the mirror like surface its elegance dancing with the wind as the ripples fluttered across its surface in a captivating flirtatious dance. His peace would soon be over as the subtle sounds of water sloshing caught his attention, his broad head would snake to the right as his singular auburn gaze sought out the disturbance as his ear swiveled to catch the sound once more. His inky nose twitching along the subtle breeze as he aimed to gather some sort of scent but had fell short. Soon after a few moments of studying the length of the river he would catch sight of another wading into the slower moving waters before stilling. Slightly puzzled he would rise, his muscles protesting at the movement since he had been seated for awhile. His large frame would turn towards the other, his gnarled features falling stoic as large paws quickly began to cover ground. The thrill of meeting another lacing his nerves in a steely fashion. Hopefully this wouldn't go askew. Pointed ears would fold slightly to the rear of his head before pressing forward with intent as he drew nearer to the golden wolf, whose scent now smelled female. A slow crease of his lips would indicate a simple smile, as he approached from the rear, taking a cautious step to veer towards the woman's side as he aimed to stand a few feet away. His singular gaze taking in her appearance quickly before he'd gain the nerve of speaking. Her features seemed delicate, almost young as she stood nearly chest deep in the water, her sandy colored coat darkening at the edge of the water as it became soaked, his would be brow would furrow slightly, giving way to distorting his gnarled features as he struggled to remain where he stood or veer off in the opposite direction before he was noticed. But instead he chose to stay, his inky lips parting to reveal a heavily accented tone. "Good day..." his frame would still, thick neck dropping some what to allow his singular gaze a better view of the woman and his surroundings, he was cautious after all, this land was entirely new to him.

A single ear flicked at the sound of the honking geese flying overhead, but that was the only reaction to the world around her as she stood frozen in place and waited for a fish to swim within her reach. She saw a few swim by a few feet away but she had learned that it was more trouble than it was worth to go for those. More often than not she'd miss and end up scaring off any of the other fish that would have come by her otherwise. She was so focused that all she heard was the splash of water around her and the occasional call of a bird near by. Any sound of the man approaching her was lost to her until he spoke. "Good day..." The deeper, accented voice caught her off guard and she jumped like the easily startled doe she was. Her tri-footed stance went unsteady on the soft river bottom and she slipped, splashing into the water with an ungraceful flop, sinking below the surface for a moment. It was much too shallow for her to have any problems getting up again, but she still popped back up into the air with what was probably an over dramatic gasp. With all of her fur now soaked through to the skin she turned her head toward the shore to see the heavily scarred man standing there. She assumed that he must have been the one that spoke and she was suddenly incredibly embarrassed by her clumsy tumble into the river. "Oh! Um, sorry, hello! Good day!" she said frantically as she wadded out of the water toward him. Once all three paws were on solid ground she gave herself a shake, hoping that she wasn't hitting him too much with the spray of water. Unknown to her, the movement only made her look even more ridiculous. Her peach and white spotted coat spiked up around her and stood up in silly clumps around her neck. "Sorry... Um, lost my footing a bit there! Sorry, I'm Etain, nice to meet you!" |
