Sunlight had yet to break over the mountainside but the faint glow that wreathed the eastern peaks of the mountains was steadily growing brighter. Aerndis moved nimbly down a rocky embankment. The terrain here was challenging. Not only did she need to make sure she didn't fall to her doom, she also had to make sure that she was silent, or she was never going to get close enough to those weird horned sheep. Aerndis eyed a herd of Dall sheep that were moving along a narrow ridge toward one of the many little streams. Her eyes narrowed as she crouched down. She needed a plan. She also needed a target.

Aerndis settled down, her legs bunched loosely beneath her. From her position she just observed the herd, searching for any signs of weakness. Most of the ewe's seemed to be in good health and she frowned. Perhaps a good summer harvest had given the animals all the energy they'd need to deal with  an ambitious yearling. Wait! She spied an older ewe whose back legs were shaking just slightly. At first she thought she imagined it but as she watched she noticed that the ewe was favoring her left leg and when she would shift her weight to it it would shake. Ok, target acquired. Now how was she going to do this? She knew she'd have to make up her mind soon. The sheep were a good ways away, not much bigger than mice from where she was standing and certainly wasn't going to get breakfast standing all the way over here.
