An old coydog who had once been ginger with darker brindling but now has more gray on his muzzle than ginger and only a few dull yellow teeth left totters up to the remaining pups and surveys them while sucking on his teeth. "You and you," he says to Eligos and Evangelos in a faint, querulous voice. "Rest of you wait to fight the winners. Come on then, I haven't got all day." He leads them to a circle of stones set into a ring in the ground. "Iffen you get a paw out of bounds you forfeit," he told them. "Once you're done wearing yerselves out I'll decide who wins. You go first," he says to Eligos. "Now git going!"

Theta walked up to the area where the fight was going to take place. She was excited to be in this tournament. It would be her chance to prove her skills. She knew that she would be facing the winner of this fight and was eager for it to start. She would have the chance to scout out the fighting styles of both pups so that when she fought one of them she would have some idea of what to expect. Sitting down a good foot or two away from the ring she sat down and waited for the fight to begin.

Eligos stood quietly in a reserved state of excitement and nerves, neither of which particularly showed on his dark, gold-streaked face as he watched the other pup contestants and the strange brindled coydogs that were picking them out for matches. He tried to catch Pyrrhic and Aureus' eyes to give them encouragement, but they'd already been led off to their separate rings to start their fights. His attention was dragged away from them, though he wished he could watch their fights, when an ancient coydog picked out him and another boy. He watched the coydog with disgust as it tottered ahead of them, so at first he didn't take particular note of the other boy, until he reminded himself to take the time to observe his opponent. Then he got a bit of a shock, as the other boy had long, curly fur cascading down from his head. Eligos' face went smooth with shock, and he nearly missed a step. What in the hell?

He forced back his surprise at the unusual tumble of curls to look at his opponent objectively. They were approximately the same size and build, so neither of them would have the edge there. Eligos had been training nearly from birth for fighting, but there was nothing to say that the other boy hadn't been as well so he wouldn't make the mistake of assuming.

The ancient old coydog indicated in his abrasive way that Eligos was to start the battle. Eli stepped into the ring with the other boy, then drew himself up to his full height. All right. Time to make his father proud. (Was his dad watching? He really hoped so, but he knew that his dad had planned to fight as well and he might already have a match too. He hoped, at least, that he'd do well enough to earn his father's approval.) He took a deep breath to settle his nerves, then slipped into the fighting stance that had been drilled into him over and over.

Almost before he had finished settling into his stance, he was in motion, hurtling himself forward in an attempt to drive the point of his left shoulder up into the other boy's windpipe just above his chest. As he did his head turned to his left as well, and his jaws opened wide and darted forward in an attempt to snatch a mouthful of those curls with the intention of getting a good grip and jerking hard on them.

Evangelos was excited, he couldn’t lie, but he was also doing his best to keep his cool in front of his brother Dylas. Oh boy was he going to have a field day with his older sibling after this… and goodness knew they were lucky enough to have their mother agree to let them fight.

He was a bit curious about the coydogs… they were weird. Different. He found himself considering the wolves about them… but part of him knew it was wrong to think that way. It was like thinking he was better than Icon or No Face when he was starting to see them as equals.

He flicked his head when was picked by the ancient coydog. He rose, beginning to follow after it. He caught the other boy glancing him over and Evangelos flashed a good natured smile. Whether or not his opponent returned it was of no consequence to him… so long as he was minding his manners that was what mattered.

He had been training with his mother to fight, to use Icon as an accessory of battle… but he didn’t assume anything of his opponent. He noticed they were roughly the same size and build though, giving each a fair chance against the other.

Once inside the ring Evangelos dropped into a defensive stance -- not as smooth as it could have been, since he was still working on doing it fluidly, but at least he was ready. The coydog indicated his opponent would go first and Evangelos furrowed his brow. Fine… let them begin!

Evangelos dropped low, attempting to lunge for the other boy’s forelegs as he came charging. He planned to meet the other head on and slam bodily into him, hopefully mostly under that shoulder point that had been aimed at him prior. But during his attack he felt jaws snap into his mane and the boy let out a startled yelp at the sharp pain he felt. No fair!

Icon, who had been circling in the air above the wolves prior, dropped down then. The gyrfalcon let out a shrill cry, mostly to distract the other child before she attempted to grab at his scruff. Her goal was to get a brief hold, maybe pierce the skin, enough to get the other child to focus on her long enough to let Evangelos find his wind for the second wave of attacks.

-----

Ooc:: Tea you can assume that the shoulder point hit Evangelos at some point where it makes sense. Due to the nature of his own kind of attack I left that open because I didn’t want to necessarily powerplay that his counter-ish attempt dive at the legs was successful. <333

The other boy ducked low as Eligos charged him, and without time to avoid it in any other manner, Eli gathered his hindquarters beneath him and leaped over the boy's head. There was a satisfying yelp as he tugged on the long hair on his way. He sought to land all four feet with his full weight on Evangelos' back, but carried through his forward motion to drop his head and attempt to dig his teeth into the boy's hip. To his surprise though, as he leaped forward he felt something sharp strike where his scruff had been moments ago, scraping along his own hip and leaving a gash along the top of it, but it happened so fast that he simply kept going with his own attack.

He couldn't fathom what had struck him - he hadn't noticed the companion, so it didn't immediately occur to him that it could have been a falcon - it certainly couldn't have been the boy! The suddenness of the pain was a shock to him. He was hardly a sheltered pampered prince, he'd fought with his siblings and trained with the adults in his family, but he'd always been able to brace himself for the minor pains that came with that. This, though, he hadn't even seen coming, and if he hadn't already been focused on his attack he might have been startled enough to stumble and stop - an important lesson to have learned from his first real spar and one he would undoubtedly dwell on later when he wasn't in the middle of a flying-leap-attack.

Icon managed to strike the other boy though not where she had originally intended. Though that was to be expected when one was in battle. The gyrfalcon swooped back upward, circling in to make another move as the boy made his attempt to get on Evan’s back.

Evangelos kept going though, attempting to twist to his right so he could swing back around and, hopefully, be parallel alongside his opponent. He felt the other kid slide over his back as he did so and Evangelos kicked out with his hind legs, hoping to catch the other boy right in the rump. With any luck he could hopefully make the other stumble and fall on his face!

Meanwhile Icon fluttered back down, talons ready to grab at the other kid if he managed to recover before Evangelos spun around.
