Since leaving Sirius' pack Balsam hadn't known what to do with himself. He needed to find Sota but for reasons he couldn't quite wrap his head around Balsam was unmotivated to do so. He was oddly tired by his time in captivity. Though he was grateful to be free and proud of his ability to free himself, he was exhausted and he didn't feel like socializing. It was important that Sota knew he was okay and Balsam wanted to tell his friend that...just not today. He just couldn't. For now he just needed to be alone.

And alone he was. Balsam had set up camp in the deluge. He'd picked a nice quiet corner and a cave up off the ground. Travelers walked by occasionally but they were oblivious to his presence - and that was just how he liked it. He was wary of giants now. Of course he had always known they were dangerous but now the threat was real to him. He knew firsthand what they were capable of now.

Balsam made his way back towards his cave dragging a small goat behind him. He'd pulled a vine down and wrapped it around the goat's shoulders after making the kill. The beast would feed him for awhile; all he needed to do was get it up into the cave and out of reach of potential thieves.

After reaching the base of the ravine wall Balsam tied the goat vine to a rope he had left hanging. The first thing he'd done after making his temporary home was "install" a crude pulley system similar to the ones he'd grown up using. Once up in his cave he would use the system to drag the goat up the wall and into safety.

Having put a few well placed little footholds in place, Balsam climbed the wall with ease. He then turned back and began the tedious process of dragging the goat up after him.
