As morning came and went, Yong Cheng fiddled with his paws. His pads were mostly soft, but calloused near his toes -- he often walked on them -- and he wondered just how much more roughened they would be by the end of his stint in the Ashen Armada. He had never asked Sirius if he'd one day be a free wolf, but he had a sinking suspicion that unless he made Sirius bleed for it, he'd never truly be free.
But he was nothing if not a loyal fellow, so his priorities were now to his new masters. And the first order of business had been exactly as Sirius told him -- Midday, bring yourself to the Oasis, and we will begin.
It kept him up all night, but Yong Cheng had slept heavily that morning. He needed to show Sirius that he was a trustworthy, capable pack member. He couldn't be seen slacking, at least not in front of the Warlord himself. At midday, Yong Cheng showed up at where Sirius had directed the day before. Sure enough, the Warlord was there.

It was a cool morning, a rarity for a spot almost in the desert. The dark-shaded warlord appreciated the light wind that brushed the air and brought with it an added layer of cool. It was perfect for what he had in mind, not sunny, but no hint of rain, either.
The Warlord arrived a little before midday, arriving at the sandy beach of the Oasis, and checking over his chosen area for lumps and holes. Once he deemed it a flat, easy surface for a beginner fighter, he used a paw to draw lines in the sand, to mark the arena it would become. He took a seat, and waited for the arrival of his newest project.
“Bird” he said in greeting, giving the smaller man a moment to examine the arena, the flat sand, and the large space for the two men to train within. The water wasn’t far away, but with enough distance that neither were likely to end up in it by accident.
“Alright, come forth” Sirius said, taking a few steps backwards himself - into the arena. “Do you know the basic defenses?”

"Sirius," Yong Cheng responded, as he surveyed the sparring area. Sirius had demarcated what were to be the bounds of their arena; Yong Cheng supposed he wasn't to cross those lines until the spar was over. He was a little nervous, but he tried not to show it. Usually he defused conflict or tried to escape from it. When caught face-to-face, he fought until he had an opening to run. This was the first time he'd have to see a fight through to the finish.
In answer, Yong Cheng dipped his head, shuffling his limbs into what resembled a coiled spring, though in action and manner he seemed more like a snake. His actions, while unfamiliar to him, still came with a natural grace. He pulled his ears flat against his skull, tail tucked between his legs to protect his belly. His neck was bowed, hidden as much as it could be in the folds of his skin and fur. As far as defence went, he only knew what instincts he had been born with.

Sirius watched the man as he stepped into the ring, and instead of verbally answering him, he let his body shift into a defensive posture. This was obviously a part he was well versed in, and Sirius considered his motions sound, and good. He did nothing to correct him. It was the next part that would be the deciding moments. With the cool wind still kicking up the scent of the lazy Oasis, and sand between their toes, they would be ready.
“Come at me” the Warlord said, setting his own defenses, and lessening his stance into something loose and well balanced. He made a gesture with his nose, tipping it upwards in an indication for the smaller wolf to proceed. He doubted Bird knew how to start a fight, but he was also resourceful and clever. He wanted to see what the man came up with, and what he did when pushed.

He really, really didn't want to go at Sirius.
By leaving his defensive position, Yong Cheng knew he was opening himself up to attack from the Warlord. He had a feeling that Sirius was just waiting for a weak spot to go for, and the temptation to simply run was building up and boiling over within him. Yong Cheng forced it down, gritting his teeth. His eyes narrowed, leaving less space for Sirius to scratch at, though it came with the downside of lessening his field of vision.
Yong Cheng was small -- very -- and fast, too. He knew Sirius was going to be hard to attack, not if he wanted to bite at his neck. But being twice his height, Sirius was much like a walking bridge. If Yong Cheng could just manage to run under him...
He tensed his muscles and pushed off, using his lightweight frame to shoot for Sirius the moment the Warlord was ready, snout wrinkled in a snarl. His jaws widened, small, razor-sharp teeth glistening in the midday light. He knew Sirius was prepared, but the longer the Warlord stood watching him, the longer he'd have time to assess Yong Cheng. Time was of the essence.
Yong Cheng aimed to duck to Sirius' right, and if he timed it correctly, he'd be able to run at his side. His year as a loner took over and all he wanted to do was to end it -- even if it meant fighting dirty. Were he successful in his efforts, he'd be under Sirius, near the Warlord's hind legs, and aiming to bite at his male pride. If he bit at Sirius' legs, Sirius would still have three. If he yanked at his tail, the Warlord's momentum would drag Yong Cheng around the ground. And there was quite simply no way he could go for the throat. If only Sirius had some sort of physical weakness he could exploit...
Through all this, he kept his ears flattened, and his neck tucked. Cheng's body was lowered close to the ground to increase his stability and at the same time protect his stomach region. His tail whipped behind him to steady his balance.
""
OOC: Cheng is aiming for Sirius' balls because they're the only place he can reach. His ears are flat and his neck is relatively short. He's also lowered himself more, so that his centre of gravity is lower as well. His tail's functioning sort of like a balance, providing torque in the direction opposite to his motion. Edited to correct grammar.

The first moments just before a battle were always the most peaceful for the Warlord. He was born to fight, to spill blood. Quite literally, as a former slave, his parents had been chosen to produce a child with attributes the slavers approved of. It was the mostly-quiet moments, the soft sound of breath, the scratch of paws on sand as they prepared themselves. A slow, devilish smile would wind its way up his lips. Let the games begin.
To the Warlords great despair, he was accustomed to protecting certain parts of himself. There were definitely wolves he fought with, his Wife… Deathbelle’s children… that liked to go for parts of him that he would dearly regret failing to defend.
The small, quick wolf came at him, and Sirius followed his attack around, turning when bird did, and as he came in for an attack, Sirius would aim to buff him away with an attack of his own. With the intention of smacking him around the shoulder, feline claws sheathed, and knife still hiding in his arm-guard. He had no intention of truly injuring the small wolf, only seeing how he fought. He was fast, that was guaranteed, and he was already showing an inclination to fight dirty. If Sirius was able to land the blow, he would wait for the moment the man was caught off guard to pounce him. He knew the best way to neutralize a quick-legged wolf was a good blow, and push him down and keep him there. If his blow did not land, he would re-adjust his defenses and wait to see what Bird did next.

Sirius was good. As fast as he was, the surroundings sped by Yong Cheng in a blur of yellow and blue. He locked in his focus on Sirius' rump. He was closing in... closing in...
Fwump.
Sirius' paw struck him with all the force a wolf his of his size could muster -- which was to say, a lot. Yong Cheng jolted, the impact on his shoulder spreading throughout his body. He was already moving though, and all Sirius' blow did was knock him off his line, changing Yong Cheng's course. A dull pain radiated through his shoulder; he'd seen Sirius' claws the first time they met, and was secretly thankful that his shoulder throbbed, not felt like it was being stabbed.
Knocked off his course, Yong Cheng stumbled away from Sirius, his own momentum helping to propel him further from the Warlord. He was woefully unprepared, and so he found his feet suddenly tripping as his shoulder froze and he buckled. It wouldn't do to go running at Sirius again, not like this. In a real fight, Yong Cheng would have run as fast as he could away from the action, but here, he was contained to within the sparring ring. Warily, he traced Sirius' movements, setting his own defenses.
He kept moving, pacing. The last thing Cheng wanted was for Sirius to catch him unawares.

His opponent recovered with shocking speed, taking the blow and stumbling from him, but he did not fall. He kept moving, which was the smartest thing he could do. The Warlord growled at the speedy creature slipped from his grasp. Bird never remained still, pacing in the arena the Warlord had set for them. Sirius watched him with hungry eyes, knowing he was heavy, and slow to turn. If it came to a race, he would be chasing Bird about the confines until he tired, and the smaller wolf found an opening. He could not allow that.
“Sadly for you, I do not fight alone” Sirius said, his grim smile slowly returning as Bast crept forward, slipping into the arena, and circling about the circler. She watched his movements for a moment, echoing them with her own, before racing forward, teeth bared, in an attempt to catch the wolf on the rump, to harry him, chase him, and cut down the room he had that could keep Sirius from him. As Bast lunged for Bird, Sirius would also, throwing his body into a ground eating lope, weary of the small confines of their arena as he charged at Bird.
