She had felt her mother calling for her within her dreams, but she had been afraid, and she had hidden herself within the dark crevices of her mind. She regretted that impulse now, but it was too late, her mother's voice was gone, and no matter how hard she sought, she could not find her. Eventually hunger forced her to face the real world beyond her dreams, and she would leave the little burrow she had buried herself in, and move beyond.

As she hunted, she began to recognise her surroundings, and realised her self conscious mind had brought her back here, back to Abaven. Her ears flattened to her skull and she slunk into the undergrowth just beyond the borders of the pack she had been born in. why had she come here? She had not yet found forgiveness within herself for killing her mother and ruining her family. She should not have come back here.

She wanted to leave, but found she did not have the will power to rise, and leave. She missed her mother something desperate in the moment, and longed to see a familiar face, but she could she bring herself to see her sister, Theory, the wolf who had taken her mother's place as ruler of Abaven?

Poem often took to patrolling the borders, she wasn’t a high ranking warrior but it helped her to feel useful. Like she was paying the pack back for being gone so long. One presence had been sorely missing on her return and as Poem paced forward the familiar scent stopped her heart. If there was one wolf she wished to hold, especially right now, it was her sister. The one she had looked so long for, and failed when the moment was most crucial. The one she should have been protecting this whole time.

”Motif?” She cried softly, her dark nose lifted into the air to search for her sister. She smelled of mud and ash but she would know her littermate anywhere. Poem rushed to her side as soon as she saw her, curled in the underbrush acting like a cur. ”Motif.” She said with relief as she didn’t hesitate to curl around her thin shoulder sister.

Having her sister back at home had helped soothe some of her old wounds. Theory still mourned the loss of Verse and Noir in different ways, but she'd been collecting what relatives she could. The ones who still wanted to be here, anyway. That was what counted. Theo cut her patrol short when she caught hold of a strange scent. It tickled her nose from the depths of her consciousness, stirring memory. Scent had a special way of fooling with your brain. It couldn't be Motif. Poem had lost track of her after she'd gambled her life for their sister's freedom. Theory had pushed her out of her mind for so long now that her brain had easier time of convincing her that she was hallucinating. Then she heard Poem's voice.

Well, they couldn't be imagining the same thing. Theory followed Poem's tracks until she came upon them both and her heart cracked anew. "Motif," she said, her voice cracking. Theory stepped forward but still hung back, unable to close the distance. "I'm so glad you've come home." Silent tears raced down her cheeks, wetting the blue feather that she'd fixed into her fur as a tribute to Shaye. What did Motif see when she looked at her?
