Hunt Skills

An idea had struck the girl. She wanted to help her packmates learn how to hunt more effectively. First she had constructed a cage of sorts by tying branches together tightly. Second, she'd made a sort of enclosure with sticks and branches in a rather large area on the fight floor. Third, she'd collected a piglet. A stinking, screaming piglet. It was difficult to hunt without killing. The pig had a few scratches on it, but it was still in pretty good shape. With the fat little squealer enclosed in his cage, Aslatiel howled, calling for hunters in the pack. This was bound to not only be informative, but terribly amusing. She had a surprise in store. Naiche heard Asla howl and at first planned to ignore her. It was a call for hunters and while he occasionally hunted it wasn’t his primary role. Naiche’s shoulder also was still sore from the stupid bird clawing it. It still worked of course but it was just one more good reason not to respond. He was, for once, resting in his den. Pan was outside the den doing whatever Pan did when there wasn’t a large cluster of ants around. He liked the little creature but there was still a limit on how much attention he gave it. Naiche closed his eyes telling himself he was ignoring the call, but his eyes slid open after a few seconds. He got up, stepping out and looking at Pan, “come on, might as well have someone with me I don’t want to gut.” Maybe that was a bit extreme but it still sounded good to state. Lying down for one more moment he let the pangolin climb up into its normal spot before heading to where Asla had called. It was always good to improve at anything, from the main job to other tasks. Improving ones hunting skills was always a good idea. Sometimes the prey was less dumb or numerous and if he was without the pack that could make his life much harder. Naiche kept to a trot but a short-legged one to not stretch the slash marks on his front shoulder. He’d tried accidentally tearing it open more than once already. When he got to where Asla was he looked from her to the setup and back. There was really nothing he had to say to her. As long as she was willing to teach he would listen and ask questions if need be. Conversing over anything but pack work or learning seemed to be off the table between them. Hanako let out a wide yawn as her ears tipped forward to listen to Aslatiel's call. She rolled onto her side, sand still clinging to her form as she pushed herself upright. She hadn't been listening all that intently but she was pretty sure she'd heard something about hunters, hunting perhaps? Her body was still achy and sore from her encounter with Hattori but it was leagues better than it used to be, meaning that her excuse to rest and recuperate was starting to get paper thin. With this in mind she decided she ought to at least see what was happening since...yeah she was a pack hunter! In fact she'd boldly make the claim she was the best fisher-woman in the whole of the pack, perhaps even all of Boreas!
By the time she arrived on scene Naiche had already beaten her too it. He'd been surprisingly caring and sweet the other day, leagues away from his frosty, tight lipped demeanour he had now. What was up with him? She was tempted to have a good ole pry into his business but then she noticed Aslatiel and in typical, overly bubbly fashion she greeted her with an overeager wave of her tail. Maybe this would be a good time to get to know the Fatalis better, or at the very least to learn a little more about hunting the"proper way." It was only then, perhaps a little belatedly, that Hanako noticed the makeshift cage with the little piglet trapped within. Aww, it was kinda cute with a squishy little snout that Hanako just wanted to reach out and boop! But being the dignified young lady that she was she restrained the urge and simply sat down, waiting for things to get underway.

Magnus was patrolling when the call sounded out from Asla to join in on some hunt training. He wouldn't say he was the worst hunter around, but what did it hurt getting some training? Besides, it was good for the girl to be doing something, and what better thing to do than teach some of these warriors a trick or two about hunting? Leaving his companions to finish the patrol, Magnus left and hurried over to the training rings where he saw others gathered before him. Naiche and Hanako, two wolves he'd recently met, and a small cage like structure holding a small piglet. It must have taken quite a bit of restraint on Aslatiel's part to not have injured the piglet more than just a few scratches, but she was older now than the last time they'd hunted and probably better at controlling her impulsive teeth and claws.
Joining the group, he offered a smile towards Hanako before moving to sit by Naiche and bump him with his shoulder in greeting. Waiting patiently for the training to start, he wondered who else would be finding themselves at this lesson.

Oh, now this was interesting. Much to her surprise, Naiche showed his ugly, yellow face. What use did he have for hunting skills? Whatever. It was just proof of how much he really wanted to be around her. She knew it. Who could blame him? She was a princess, she was smart, she was pretty. She didn't like him. That was usually what made a guy like you, right? Be mean to him and he wants what he can't have? Whatever. Next came, ugh..., Hanako. Again, whatever. She would do what she had to do. The only positive in this was the surprise that she had in store. Oh yes... and what a surprise it would be. Asla tried to keep the annoyance off of her face, instead allowing the corners of her maw to lift slightly upward in a grin. The last to show was Magnus. Now here was a wolf that she wanted to be around. The little smile shifted into a grin that flashed sharp, white teeth. The young wolf had a soft spot for the earless man. He was one of the few people that knew what she was and accepted it. For that, she would be eternally grateful. Clearing her throat, Aslatiel began her lesson. "You're out in the wild, separated from your pack. Hunger gnaws at your belly and pain wracks your body. In a day or so, you will begin to noticeably weaken. There is water, but water will only go so far. You need to eat. You need to hunt." Asla patted the cage beside her and the pig gave a grunt of panic, remembering its torment. "Have any of you hunted pig before? They're quick. The larger ones can snap a wolf in half with ease. They sometimes eat meat, and I've seen them begin to eat a kill while its still alive." The striped youngling grinned. "This one won't be that bad. Now, tell me how you would go about hunting a boar alone. One at a time, please." "Speech" |

Naiche looked at Hana for a moment, a quick glance of concern to make sure she seemed to move ok, a small twitch of his tail was the only sign she got on his being glad to see her there. He still didn't care much for her, but he was glad she felt well enough to be out here for this lesson. A nod was given Magnus, the wolf was a warrior he could respect. Regardless of the instructor though this was a lesson so any conversation about other matters was a thing for later. Now he’d have to talk to Asla. Honestly, it was the last thing he wanted to do, this was a bad idea. The picture she offered was something he could easily imagine considering having found himself unexpectedly alone before he joined up. The only thing Naiche hadn’t felt was his body in pain, emotions yes but not his body. The lean wolf had not tried hunting pig or anything seemed dangerous as she described the large ones. She was going to mock any answer he came up with, and honestly, he wasn’t sure. Naiche was confident in hunting the game he had practice on but it was hard to say when he hadn’t tried pig. “I’d keep to the smaller ones, avoid the more dangerous sizes.” Naiche paused trying to decide on the rest of the answer, “I’ve never hunted one to say how I’d adjust. Get up as close as I can and chase it,” Naiche kept to his formally polite tone for this. Hunting wasn’t his best area sad to say, but he’d at least throw an answer out there. Pan was still on his head and neck, tail wrapped partway around. Normally his back legs were on his shoulders but this time one leg was kept closer to the other to avoid resting on Naiche’s sore spot. Good thoughtful little pangolin. Speech:"Live to fight" Think

Hanako beamed at her fishing buddy as he settled down amongst their little group. Well wasn't this nice? Or at least Hanako felt that way till Aslatiel began to explain her intent behind the gathering. She probably should have put two and two together earlier but ignorance was bliss it seemed. Her nose wrinkled as the Fatalis continued, pointing out that the little piglet she'd caught wouldn't prose much of a threat. Which was true enough. Though now that she took a proper look she noticed that the poor thing was shaking, its little hooves clicking together as it stood huddled up in the furthest corner of the cage. She understood wolves ate meat and they hunted, bla bla bla but the thought of killing something so small and defenceless just to prove a point seemed a little cruel to her. None of the other's seemed all that bothered though, making Hanako wonder if she was kicking up a fuss over nothing. Again.
Naiche said his piece and then it was her turn. Hanako's ears flicked back in an obvious show of uncertainty. She'd never gone on a proper hunt before and so she had no clue where to start or which approach was the best to take. She ummed and ahhed, silently hoping that Magnus would interject and say his piece, giving her more time to figure out what she wanted to say. But she had no such luck, she'd have to lay out her thoughts-or lack of them- whether she wanted to or not.
"I uh... I don't know. Sorry."

Listening as Aslatiel began, setting the scene and telling a story about how they were alone, separated from the pack and needing to feed and care for themselves. Magnus had done this before, at least, and he couldn't be too sure about the other two. Hanako and Naiche were both pretty young, but he didn't like assuming things too much. For all he knew, they were born and bred loners. The only thing Magnus had going for him was his years. Most of his life had been spent as a loner, so in that way he was more experienced. Though he'd never tried hunting a boar before, with a group or alone. He wasn't that stupid.
Naiche spoke first, then Hanako. Both of them weren't sure, but Naiche gave an answer he would've rather not heard. Aslatiel had just said how dangerous a grown boar was, the last thing he thought needed to be done was to get as close as possible to them. "Hunt from a distance or with a trap?" He suggested, though neither would have been something he would have tried before now. He wasn't accustomed to weapons, armor, or even crafting before coming here. Boars were an animal not to be messed with, but if worse came to worse he supposed there had to be a way.

Each wolf gave their answer in turn. Aslatiel listened to Naiche speak and her amaranthine eyes grew stern. "Getting up close depends on the size. If they're the size of this one, getting up close is fine. However," she continued, her gaze still locked on him. "If you see pigs this size, you can be sure that their mother is somewhere nearby. You do not want to encounter a mother pig trying to protect her children." They were vicious and powerful things. And when a mother cried, there was a chance that a male would follow those cries. Boars were definitely out of their league. The little guy that she had in her cage had been an opportunity that she couldn't pass. Asla had snatched it up while its mother's back was turned and hid away in the thick roots of the mangroves where she couldn't reach. Clever girl. Next came Hanako. Surprise, surprise, the brain headed girl had nothing to add. Absolutely nothing to share with the class. If possible, Asla's gaze hardened more and she simply scoffed, exhaling audibly through her dusty brown nose before moving on to the next. What did Az see in her? Magnus answered and his response was better, thankfully. The striped lady nodded her approval. "For larger prey, especially wild pigs, you can save yourself a lot of trouble and possible injury by creating a trap. Pitfalls work best for boar since they're so large. They have to be well covered though. Pigs are smart." Aslatiel smiled at the trio of students. "Now comes the fun part. I want the three of you to simply catch the pig. The winner gets a free dinner and my respect for the day. Oh, and there's something else." Turning, Aslatiel grabbed a small container from behind her. Lifting it above the cage, she dumped it on the pig and the creature grunted in surprise. "Pigs are slippery things and can turn in a dime to duck and dive through the mangroves, so I've made this one extra slippery." She'd poured melted oil over top of the pig. It would be a task for any of them to catch it, but the one that did would be the winner of the day. "Good luck. I'll be judging your tactics and we'll discuss after." With that, she opened the door to the cage and gave the pig a little prick through the bars with her claws. It squealed and rocketed out of the enclosure, skirting to the left to look for a way out of danger. Sorry piggy, not today. "Speech" |
OOC-(I rolled to see who gets to kill the pig. Magnus won, so post accordingly, please.)

Naiche had no plans of hunting one if the adult wasn’t around, and if possible likely just search for easier prey. Then again he had come out to learn how to hunt less easy prey, hadn’t he? A small nod is given to Asla. At least in a group of others, they played nice well enough. Hanako had no answer and perhaps that was no better or worse than his wrong guess, though Asla seemed to find it worse. He found it interesting that Magnus had the write answer and yet that wasn’t the way they would be attempting would not be a pitfall apparently. Naiche watched the oil dumped on the pig with a smirk and made his way into the enclosure itself. She clearly expected failure otherwise there would be more pigs for them to each take a turn. Well, or she just intended for them to not kill it if caught? As he entered the pig trotted to the farther side of the enclosure, oil slowly dripping down its sides as it trotted. Small drops fell on the ground from its side and a larger splash of it circled about the area the thing had been when Asla had dumped the oil on it. There was no hiding place in here to try and surprise the piggy from, that sure wasn’t in his favor. Naiche waited a minute, watching the piglet hoping it would calm a bit. The thing was trotting a few strides this way and that as if seeking a way out from the situation as well. Naiche twitched a lip seeing little options other than to openly give chase and so he did so. His eyes intent on his prey that of course ran from him. Asla was right, the thing was fast and was able to turn quickly. Naiche got close to it several times but ended up snapping at the air. He tried swiping at it with a paw but the slippery piggy easily leaped through his attempt. As a final attempt when he got close he tried leaping ahead estimating where it would be, a paw did land on its back but the oil had the pig just slip away again. Fine. Naiche wouldn’t want to eat an oil-coated pig anyway. With a huff of breath, Naiche turned to leave the enclosure, glancing at Hana, “good luck.” Speech:"Live to fight" Think
