Just beat the devil out of it

Halla travelled through the mist that clung low to the ground around the borders of the swamplands. She giggled softly to herself as she glanced back at Káti. He clearly seemed uncomfortable in the spookier setting of the swamp. She'd gotten a fire going and settled down with the angelica plants she'd gathered for that day. She intended to make an infusion of the roots and a poultice of the fresh leaves. Halla got to work, separating the roots from the stem and then going along and snipping off the leaves with her sharp teeth. She then gathered the roots and leaves into their own separate piles. She debated what to do with the stems. She didn't really know what to do with them so she just set them aside. "Talk" |

Káti cautiously followed after Halla with a bundle of freshly gathered peppermint in his mouth. He didn't care much for these swamplands. He thought they were rather spooky and depressing though Halla didn't seem to mind, if anything she seemed to be in her element. Soon she stopped and started working and he followed suit.
Káti set his plants down and helped Halla get a fire going. Once that was done Káti settled down to work, picking up one of the plants and placing it between his paws he set about peeling the leaves off with his teeth. One by one he plucked the plants until he had a nice pile which he then divided into smaller piles, one for the tea, one for the poultice. "Did you always want to be a healer, Halla?"

Mist parted along her legs as Halla walked over to her travois. She pulled out a deer hide bundle and unwrapped it to reveal her crafting bowls. They were getting well used this year. She wondered how long they would continue to hold up before she'd need to craft new ones. She set the bowls down in front of her then grabbed two of the roots and placed them in the first bowl. She didn't need these to be super mashed but they did need to be bruised so she took a deer fibula and went to work crushing the roots. Once that was done she took the fresh leaves and added them to the other bowl. She mashed them a bit as well. She shrugged lightly as Káti's question. "I suppose so. My father trained me to hunt from an early age and my mother instructed me in healing arts. I always did have an interest in plants. It seemed the most logical thing to devote myself to. What of you?" "Talk" |

Káti moved over to his travois and took out a deer hide bundle that contained two ceramic bowls. He took them out and then measured out an ounce of the leaves into one bowl and an ounce into the other. Picking up a piece of deer antler he pushed the flat end down onto the herbs to bruise them. Káti set the bone down as he pondered Halla's question. "I think it was always of interest to me and it was fairly easy for me to learn. I like hunting but I'm not very good at it. I was trained as a warrior though. That was what was expected of my gender and station but…" He shrugged. "I wouldn't exactly say it was my calling." He was a decent fighter and he did appreciate the skills he'd been taught. They had their uses but he wanted to be more than just muscle in a pack.

Halla returned to her travois and foundher water skin. Removing the cork she carefully poured water into each of the bowls and then pushed them near the fire to heat up. The poultice mixture would not need to stay by the fire long so she'd need to watch if carefully. As soon as it was warm she'd pull it away and then finish mashing the herb into a paste. She nodded thoughtfully at Káti's words. The tribe she'd been raised with had similar expectations. Men were expected to be warriors and women were to tend to food and the den and thus she'd been raised as a huntress. Healing wasn't widely practiced for the most part but when it was it was considered a skill for women though it was regarded with some skepticism, probably thanks to accidental poisonings. "Talk" |

Káti walked over to his travois to retrieve his water flask. Once he'd done so he dumped a pint of water into the bowl he planned to use for tea and then a bit of water into the bowl for the poultice. Káti poured in just enough to get the leaves wet. He scooted both bowls toward the fire. The tea would need to come to at least get to a simmer but as soon as the poultice mixture was warm he retrieved it from the fire and mashed it up into a paste. He looked to Halla but she said no more so he gracefully accepted the pause in conversation, taking the moment of silence to listen to the birds and the sounds of nature around him. Not every moment needed to be filled with the sound of a speaking voice.
