He dug with a sharp, solid stick into the hard, cold ground, tongue lolling in a steady pant. Occasionally, when he’d garnered enough dirt, the boy used a bison shoulder blade, flinging the soil onto a hide laid out next to the growing hole he hoped to make into a pit.
He hoped that, once completed, he could drive a deer or moose, or maybe even a bison through the misty moorland, and that it would miss the pit until it was too late. But first, he had to get the hole deep enough. So he dug and dug. His long toes weren’t the best for digging, it seemed, so he was glad he could grip tools and make the process easier on himself.
He was humming to himself, dusted in soil and mud, and enjoying the warmth the exertion brought. To one side of the growing pit lay a pile of brush and thin branches, and other things that might make a good cover if he could weave them the right way. Long saplings lay beside that pile, ready to be sharpened into a set of spears.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.

A soft scuff of paws brought Ardyn’s eyes upward to find one of Justice’s sons peering down on him. It was Fidelias, the much shyer of the two boys, and Ardyn smiled gently at the question, though he kept digging as he answered, “Hi Fidelias. I’m digging a hunting pit. If I do it right, I can make spears out of those long poles over there, He released the shoulder blade to point with one paw at the pile of supplies by the pit-in-progress, “And stick them in the bottom of this pit, pointing up. Then I can try covering the pit with a lattice,” He savored the word, learned from Enito, “Of branches, brush, and leaves and grass over top. Someone light like you or me could walk over it and not fall in.”
He tossed another shovel full of soil up onto the hide as he added, “But a big animal, like a deer or moose, or a bison, should fall right through and get hurt enough that it’s easy to kill. And then Taliesyn can help drag it out so we can process it. You want to help?”
As he asked, his tail tapped the dirty ground as he glanced up at the shy younger boy, smiling almost hopefully. Then he added quickly, “You don’t have to if you don’t want to, but it could be fun.”
