Splints and Numbing Salves [Valhallan Healer gathering Crafting lessons]
Paladin 'Knight' Ancora |
With the raid impending, he was busily stockpiling first aid supplies. He was coming to an understanding about himself. While he was trained in defensive fighting, he was far more suited to staying at the healer camp, waiting for the wounded to make their way or be guided to the healers to be treated.
He was getting old, too. Today, however, he wasn’t focused on his old age. Today he’d set up a few mortars and pestles. He had already howled for the healers of Valhalla, and those interested in learning, and he was setting up all the supplies they’d need to make salves for the day – or night – of the raid. Aurielle was planning to strike when the weather was nastiest. A good tactic that leveled the playing field.
It would mean the element of surprise, because who the hell would be out in a blizzard, especially at night. But both sides would have low visibility, making it fairer on their shorter-handed neighbors. This was, after all, a training raid, not one where the stakes were high.
His ears swiveled as the tread of paws caught his attention.

The white wolf made her way across the plains her companion on her head. Benson, the small cockatiel, held a bundle of lavender in his beak along with a few strips of White Willow bark. Elizabeth had gone through some trouble to get that bark, it was perfect for making polutices for wounds. This meant flesh wounds like bites and cuts, things prone to happen in a raid that was coming up. She was still eager to listen and learn what Paladin had to teach her. The white wolf approached with a wag of her tail and a soft smile.
"Hello Paladin!" she said as Benson fluttered down, putting the offering of herbs in front of the elder healer. "Some Lavender and White Willow Bark." she stated as she looked towards him. The lavender was more for an accent than anything. While she had used lavender polituce for anxiety before, she wasn't sure if that would entirely be useful during a fight. "I know the willow bark could make a good polituce for wounds, as for the lavender the calming effect I figured would help." Though she was sure paladin already had stocks of these ready for today's lesson. Suddenly hot embarassment flooded her pelt, sitting down she remained silent. Perhaps she was just trying to hard to prove herself.
Káti was excited for the healing lessons. It would be the first time he was able to attend medical training out in the open instead of in secret. Even though he'd be helping as a warrior during the raid he still felt it would be important to be prepared to administer first aid if he had the time. It would all depend on how the raid itself panned out. When he arrived he nodded to Paladin and to Liz before taking a seat. His tail wagged lightly back and for with Lína, his lemur settled next to him. She was also interested in healing arts and with her nimble hands and fingers she was able to do things that he couldn't with his paws alone. "Speak" ---- "Hear" ---- Think |

Elizabeth was the first to arrive, and Paladin looked over the bark and lavender, adding, “Lavender can also be used to disinfect wounds, like Yarrow and the like. And my companions here are working on a way to activate the charcoal from Willowbark, as they’ve heard it can be very good for poisonings. It’s also good for internal bleeding, though we shouldn’t be dealing with that this time around—still, best to be prepared.”
He nodded in brief approval of the woman’s finds, glancing up as Kati arrived, smiling welcomingly to the younger man. Lee and Amory were next to arrive, a little later than the others, and Paladin waited a while longer, eyes watching for any sign of Viviane or his sister. When they didn’t arrive, he gave a mental shrug. This was no huge lesson, just some communal first aid kit making.
He stretched and smiled at the group, heavy, educated brogue warm as he said, “Glad to see you all. Now, I’ve gotten a head start on getting healing preparations in order for the raid our dear warriors will be going on. This will be no focused lesson, though if you have any questions about a project you’re working on, I’m happy to answer or give a suggestion or pointer. I’ll be mainly focused on concocting some poultices. The supplies in my alcove, and the first cave on the left down the back hallway are open to you if you need them. Lee, Amory, if anyone needs guidance, I’m sure you’ll be able to point them in the right direction.”
He grinned at the pups and settled with his supplies, mortar and pestle stone between his paws as Kayode and Ime set to work putting everything he needed within reach. Then the two primates retreated into the cave system, returning with a large tortoise shell of fresh coals, smaller shells and bones for stirring and poking the fire or hooking various vessels off the flame without risking burns or scalds. The primates set the coal-filled shell in the center of the ravine clearing, within reach of everyone, feeding the coals enough twigs and sticks to keep the coals hot. If anyone needed water, the spring trickled into a pool at the left side of the ravine nearby.

Káti listened as Paladin stated that this wouldn't be a formal lesson but a crafting session. He was a bit disappointed but figured he could just go ahead and ask some questions that were on his mind and work them into a project. First though, he wanted to grab some yarrow. He dug some dried yarrow out of his hide bundle and wondered the best way to make a poultice. He felt comfortable working with the herb and making a paste but application methods could some times be tricky. Pulling out his ceramic bowl he started to break the dried yarrow up into the bowl while he aimed a question at Paladin. "Paladin, what methods do you prefer for applying a poultice? I've used just the herb mixture or a combination with peat moss and secured it with hide bandages. I'm wonder what other options there are." Hide bandages were great but he was curious if the more experience healer had additional options. "Speak" ---- "Hear" ---- Think |
