Paladin 'Knight' Ancora

With the raid impending, he was busily stockpiling first aid supplies. He was coming to an understanding about himself. While he was trained in defensive fighting, he was far more suited to staying at the healer camp, waiting for the wounded to make their way or be guided to the healers to be treated.

He was getting old, too. Today, however, he wasn’t focused on his old age. Today he’d set up a few mortars and pestles. He had already howled for the healers of Valhalla, and those interested in learning, and he was setting up all the supplies they’d need to make salves for the day – or night – of the raid. Aurielle was planning to strike when the weather was nastiest. A good tactic that leveled the playing field.

It would mean the element of surprise, because who the hell would be out in a blizzard, especially at night. But both sides would have low visibility, making it fairer on their shorter-handed neighbors. This was, after all, a training raid, not one where the stakes were high.

His ears swiveled as the tread of paws caught his attention.

Tonights the night
With the announcement of the raid pending over her mind Elizabeth decided to answer Paladin's call. Of course it had come to a surprise for her, not that she knew why considering she had grown up in a war. Raids were a common occurence in her homeland and she'd be on the front lines for the healers then, hopefully she could do the same here. Elizabeth was disappointed in herself, she had to become a much better healer for her pack. She admitted she was not well versed in their politics and it didn't feel as if she had put the effort in as needed. However, she would do whatever she could to help.

The white wolf made her way across the plains her companion on her head. Benson, the small cockatiel, held a bundle of lavender in his beak along with a few strips of White Willow bark. Elizabeth had gone through some trouble to get that bark, it was perfect for making polutices for wounds. This meant flesh wounds like bites and cuts, things prone to happen in a raid that was coming up. She was still eager to listen and learn what Paladin had to teach her. The white wolf approached with a wag of her tail and a soft smile.

"Hello Paladin!" she said as Benson fluttered down, putting the offering of herbs in front of the elder healer. "Some Lavender and White Willow Bark." she stated as she looked towards him. The lavender was more for an accent than anything. While she had used lavender polituce for anxiety before, she wasn't sure if that would entirely be useful during a fight. "I know the willow bark could make a good polituce for wounds, as for the lavender the calming effect I figured would help." Though she was sure paladin already had stocks of these ready for today's lesson. Suddenly hot embarassment flooded her pelt, sitting down she remained silent. Perhaps she was just trying to hard to prove herself.

Káti was excited for the healing lessons. It would be the first time he was able to attend medical training out in the open instead of in secret. Even though he'd be helping as a warrior during the raid he still felt it would be important to be prepared to administer first aid if he had the time. It would all depend on how the raid itself panned out. When he arrived he nodded to Paladin and to Liz before taking a seat. His tail wagged lightly back and for with Lína, his lemur settled next to him. She was also interested in healing arts and with her nimble hands and fingers she was able to do things that he couldn't with his paws alone.

"Oh Gosh, oh no, oh gosh!" the deep russet brindle girl said to herself, almost in a panic, as she ran towards the sound of Paladin's howl that had faded some time ago. "I can't believe I did it again!" she scolded herself as she fought through the snow, her paws seemingly sinking into the powdery substance more now that she was in a hurry. She had heard through the grapevine that Paladin was going to hold a healing class and she very much wanted to be a part of that but that meat had tasted so good and she felt so sleepy after with her belly full. Laoise was just glad she woke up when she did and heard the older man's fading howl. She had planned on going out to find some herbs to bring with her but of course now that wasn't an option with her being late and all. Finally, after what felt like an eternity she spotted the group of wolves and slowed to a brisk trot, trying to shake off the snow that had clung to her russet and coal fur in her mad dash. She couldn't let them see her so disheveled, right? Well, it did nothing for her panting, the girl trying her best to slow her breath before she appeared before the others. "Hi Paladin, Káti and Liz!" she said warmly with a beaming smile, though her voice was still slightly winded. Quickly she took a seat facing the older healer with her coal colored tail curled neatly at her side with her russet ears perked in attention.

She was late, though it was definitely her fault after staying up way later than she meant to. She had been out collecting random things she came across for her own personal collections. She was asleep in her den, and even when Paladin called at first, it didn't register with her that she was supposed to get up. It wasn't until the howl was dying away that it clicked, her eyes flew open, and she immediately scrambled to her feet and half stumbled, half bolted from her den. She was hardly even awake, though she did her best to blink away the sleep as she stumbled along for the first few moments. She paused for a moment to give herself a good shake to wake herself up, and once she felt a little more alert, she bounded off in search of Paladin. When she found the small group, she slipped in beside them and offered a quick, embarrassed nod to Paladin and waited for things to start.

Elizabeth was the first to arrive, and Paladin looked over the bark and lavender, adding, “Lavender can also be used to disinfect wounds, like Yarrow and the like. And my companions here are working on a way to activate the charcoal from Willowbark, as they’ve heard it can be very good for poisonings. It’s also good for internal bleeding, though we shouldn’t be dealing with that this time around—still, best to be prepared.”

He nodded in brief approval of the woman’s finds, glancing up as Kati arrived, smiling welcomingly to the younger man. Lee and Amory were next to arrive, a little later than the others, and Paladin waited a while longer, eyes watching for any sign of Viviane or his sister. When they didn’t arrive, he gave a mental shrug. This was no huge lesson, just some communal first aid kit making.

He stretched and smiled at the group, heavy, educated brogue warm as he said, “Glad to see you all. Now, I’ve gotten a head start on getting healing preparations in order for the raid our dear warriors will be going on. This will be no focused lesson, though if you have any questions about a project you’re working on, I’m happy to answer or give a suggestion or pointer. I’ll be mainly focused on concocting some poultices. The supplies in my alcove, and the first cave on the left down the back hallway are open to you if you need them. Lee, Amory, if anyone needs guidance, I’m sure you’ll be able to point them in the right direction.”

He grinned at the pups and settled with his supplies, mortar and pestle stone between his paws as Kayode and Ime set to work putting everything he needed within reach. Then the two primates retreated into the cave system, returning with a large tortoise shell of fresh coals, smaller shells and bones for stirring and poking the fire or hooking various vessels off the flame without risking burns or scalds. The primates set the coal-filled shell in the center of the ravine clearing, within reach of everyone, feeding the coals enough twigs and sticks to keep the coals hot. If anyone needed water, the spring trickled into a pool at the left side of the ravine nearby.

Káti listened as Paladin stated that this wouldn't be a formal lesson but a crafting session. He was a bit disappointed but figured he could just go ahead and ask some questions that were on his mind and work them into a project. First though, he wanted to grab some yarrow. He dug some dried yarrow out of his hide bundle and wondered the best way to make a poultice. He felt comfortable working with the herb and making a paste but application methods could some times be tricky. Pulling out his ceramic bowl he started to break the dried yarrow up into the bowl while he aimed a question at Paladin. "Paladin, what methods do you prefer for applying a poultice? I've used just the herb mixture or a combination with peat moss and secured it with hide bandages. I'm wonder what other options there are." Hide bandages were great but he was curious if the more experience healer had additional options.

Paladin told them that it wasn't a focused lesson, but more of a crafting session for poultices and stuff. Her head tilted slightly to the side as she watched the primates getting the supplies ready, eyes moving between them, Paladin, Kati, and the others. She had to admit, she was embarrassed. She didn't really know how to make poultices or other medicines yet, she'd been mostly just sort of playing around with plants since she hadn't been sure what she wanted to do. She'd been dabbling in different crafts here and there as she tried to figure out what her calling might be, but so far...nothing seemed to be biting. Hopefully, she'd learn something here and maybe this would help her figure out what she wanted to do. As Kati asked a question, the girl quietly slipped away towards the stock of herbs and picked out a couple of familiar things. Returning to her original spot, she placed down the lamb's ear and lavender between her paws. "Would this make an okay poultice?" She asked with uncertainty.
