I Feel... Cold

Áskell felt cold emotionally and physically. His father's passing at the fangs of the invading dire wolves had bee shocking and unexpected. He thought of Harbringr as this immortal creature and the best fighter in all of Habari. Even now he found it difficult to come to terms with the absence. He didn't grieve in the way his brother did and so he set about to be on his own. At least the journey had started that way.
He'd worked his way northward through the battlefield when he ran into Úlfr and Dagrún. He had little interest in being followed by the Fireside duo but eventually he relented. Maybe they'd provide a good distraction. However, when they told him about the ice bridge he had to take a closer look. If that bridge was where those awful creatures were getting in…

Úlfr was celebrating turning one by traveling north to see this ice bridge he'd been hearing about. Ok, so he'd been one for awhile now but the winter had been so harsh he hadn't been able to travel as much as he'd like and now that spring was almost over he was determined to make the trip. Winter was taking too long to leave and he wasn't going to let it get in the way. He'd been planning to go along but he hadn't traveled far when he realized Dagrún was shadowing him. After a quick talk he agreed to let her travel with him. She was almost a yearling anyway and he knew that Chaos and Valkyrie were interested in raising hardy children.

Dagrún had been focusing on her crafting abilities and lingering around Fireside as the winter continued to hold on. It didn't take long for her to start getting cabin fever. It seemed like the winter was never going to end so when she saw Úlfr leaving the pack lands and pulling a travois with him she had to go and investigate. The moment she heard he was going to the ice bridge she knew she had to follow suit. It took a bit of haggling but ultimately he agreed to let her tag along. The journey was rough and it seemed the further north they went the deeper the snow and the colder the air, but she was determined not to turn back.

Áskell traveled mostly in silence until he finally caught sight of the ice bridge. "Whoa… look at that!" Across the ocean stretched a lengthy stretch of ice as far as the eye could see. He hadn't ever been this far and he was starting to wonder if the bridge had always been there and he'd just never seen it or if it was the result of the particularly long and frigid winter they'd had according to his father. He hadn't been alive long enough to real know any different than what he'd experienced. Áskell padded down to the edge of the bridge and tested it before carefully walking out onto the thin ice. He flinched at the freezing wind as bore down on the trio from the north.

Úlfr caught the shift in manner of the Habari boy he'd met so he decided not to press his luck. Instead he just trotted along happily, taking in the sites and the chill northern air. Something about the rugged, difficult terrain and tempestuous weather made him feel alive and alert. He certainly found it more to his taste than the rolling fields and flatter range land of Fireside's territory. They soon arrived at the edge of an ice bridge. He whistled. "I'll say, I wonder how long this as been here." He followed after Áskell, his tail wagging as he went. The first thing he did as he stepped out onto the bridge was to lower his head and test the strange scents coming off the ice. There were bits of hair here and there but he couldn't pinpoint what they belonged to. Some might be caribou but some didn't seem to match anything.

Dagrún scrambled after the boys. As interesting as the trip was the farther north they went the colder it got and she stopped enjoying the trip shortly after passing the mile-high woods. "Are we there yet? My feet are cold!" She was wishing now she'd wrapped some hide around her paws but she had no idea it was going to be this cold or she wouldn't have bothered going after them. Though she had to admit the snow was beautiful, especially with the sun rising up in the sky and sending it all to sparkling. When they arrived at the ice bridge she hung back for a bit, eyeing it suspiciously. "Probably not too long, surely somebody would have noticed it before."

Áskell glanced back at the Fireside wolves, turning his attention to the girl and nodding. "Yea, I think so. There wouldn't have been so much chatter if it'd always been here. Blast that wind is cold." He squinted against it as he walked along the ice bridge, his nails clicking on the ice as he went. The cold ice on his paw pads was particularly uncomfortable and Áskell was starting to wonder about the risk of frostbite. His pace slowed. "Ok, well we saw that the bridge is real and it's fucking cold here. I don't think I care to try and get all the way across. For all we know this thing could start to break apart." He'd had enough of the world crumbling underneath him lately.

Úlfr continued to sniff the ice as he padded along slowly behind Áskell, his tail waving lazily as he walked. He was focused on deciphering the scents but as the wind picked up he found himself growing more nervous. They were on a slippery surface and he could already tell the heat from his paw pads was starting to melt the ice enough that it was making the surface slick. As Áskell voiced turning back he nodded. "Yea, I agree. I don't want to push our luck out here. Besides, who knows what big sea creatures are lurking out here. We don't know how stable this bridge is." He could just see a whale or something ramming into the bridge and sending all three into the water.

Dagrún moved cautiously across the bridge, flinching at the cold on her bare paw pads. She swiftly pinned her ears to her head, seeking to keep them warm. That wind was terrible and as it blew in from the north when she lifted her head she got a full face of it. In some ways it made it hard to breath so she kept her focus on her paws as she walked along after the boys. She didn't want to whine but she was more than ready to head back. The twisty trees were far more interesting then a band of ice going out into the water in her opinion. Thankfully, both boys decided to head back and she quickly turned around and scrambled back onto solid ground.
