These little firefly things apparently weren't going away anytime, and no matter how determined he was to catch some, he kept coming up short. Failure didn't settle well with him and he was beginning to grow frustrated at his lack of success thus far. Annoyed, Veigar kicked at the near-frozen dirt as he stalked through the redbud forest. Even the nighttime couldn't hide his irritation - the moon was huge overhead and cast a strange glow over the land, illuminating him and his failures perfectly. Only occasionally did he swipe at a passing firefly, never quite getting the rewarding feeling of a bug smacking off his paws, because they weren't bugs, not that he could see, and he certainly couldn't catch any. A frustrated growl bubbled from deep within his chest as he passed by a tree, marveling briefly at how its bark reflected an almost frightening shade of purple from the moon's light.

Veigar is completely blind; his eyes are a hazy shade of pale yellow, though he tries his best to hide this fact.
His saliva also glows a faint shade of neon green since the Ooze event.

It would have been an normal occurrence to stumble upon the energetic and curious pup as he roamed the nook, chasing fireflies and setting for himself unattainable challenges as pups often did, but tonight catching Veigar in his playing did not amuse timid Aryn, it set a pit of worry deep in her stomach and she couldn't quite put her paw on why. The fireflies danced past his paws, seemingly disappearing into vapor if ever the exuberant hunter did manage what should have been a clean catch. They lit his already faintly glowing pelt in an eerie blue tint, and as Aryn stepped closer she noticed a few spots of glowing fungus further in the trees.

Once she'd caught sight of the boy she was not willing to continue back to her den, not if it meant leaving a child alone in the middle of the night surrounded by what Aryn could not confirm nor deny was the supernatural. She tried to keep the worry out of her voice, forcing a soft smile and coming up alongside him. "Not having much luck? Have you tried waiting to see if they'll land at all?" Even this close to the 'insects', Aryn could hear no buzz nor the flap of wings. The fur along her spine began to stand on end and she took a single unsure step backwards.

It was easy for Veigar to sink deep into the labyrinth of his own mind, often feeling quite alone even when the reality was that he was hardly ever really alone. He hadn't spent much time outside of Habari's lands and lately he'd been working on his training with Askell. Somehow in this moment he didn't recognize that Aryn was nearby, even if subconsciously he could hear her approach; he nearly jumped out of his skin when she approached and spoke. The growl in his chest died down, fading just as the firefly lights did. "No, no luck," he said, sounding equal parts sad and frustrated at the admission.

Perhaps he thought he ought to be able to harvest the little balls of light; his own coat possessed a similar sort of glow, after all, and he didn't know anyone else in Habari who had that power. Not that he could control it - but maybe these firefly-looking things couldn't, either. Veigar realized he was pouting and he tried to reign in his temper before it got the best of him. Her idea was a sound one, even if he wasn't sure it would work, at least not for him. Veigar wasn't a patient boy, which was becoming especially evident as he grew older. "You think we should we try?" he asked her curiously, leaning slightly against her for comfort.

She could tell the boy was dejected and offered him a comforting smile as he admitted his failure. In truth, Aryn was not sure if sitting patiently would help in the lightest - fireflies made their glow to ward off predators or attract mates, and they avoided brightly lit areas for those reasons. Veigar may not have been brightly lit, but his glow was noticeable especially when he was angry as he was now. Anyways, these weren't any normal sort of fireflies.

He leaned against her and she returned the pressure against him with her shoulder and head. "Try and calm yourself, you glow much fainter when you aren't so riled up and it may scare them." She counselled him softly. It was easier said then done, of course, especially as Aryn could not take her own advice and calm her own frantic heartbeat in the face of the odd night changes. "If we remain still, they may come and hide in the grass as the yellow fireflies do." That was, if they were fireflies at all. Her muzzle tilted up toward the sky, where the moon still loomed full and the stars streaked unnaturally. Chances were, these were not at all the type of fireflies to take a break on a thick blade of grass.

He didn't like the feeling of watching these colored fireflies slip just out of his grasp, over and over. The more they got away from him, the more he wanted to catch them, but clearly his methods weren't quite working out. He didn't think he was that bad at hunting though.. so maybe there was something to what Aryn was saying. He let out a little sigh as he moved alongside her and leaned into her. As far as Veigar was concerned, she was the closest thing he had to a parent - besides Deathbelle, who had fed him when he was born, and besides Recluse, who had helped welcome him here. He was more likely to listen to those three than anyone else.

"Okay," he agreed quietly, trying to will himself to become less agitated. It was easier said than done though for him. He took in a slow breath as he watched the world around them. The fireflies, or whatever they were, blinked in an out of existence. There seemed to be no rhyme or reason to how they moved. Some blinked quickly, in steady succession, while others simply disappeared as soon as he noticed them. It almost felt like his eyes were playing tricks on him at this point. He wondered if it was possible for those colors to get stuck in his vision, like how he'd see bright lights if he looked at the sun for too long. "I... I don't think they act like yellow fireflies," he stammered after a moment. It wasn't like him to feel fear, hardly ever, but these things were growing more unnerving by the second. He swore one flew straight for his face and then vanished, without the contact he'd expect from a bug. Veigar shuddered. "They don't seem to see me at all..."

While Aryn was doing her best to exist in this moment as free as terror as possible for young Veigar's sake, her efforts to remain calm failed again and again as the fireflies continued to scream to them that they were definitely not normal fireflies. She scooted her seated butt backwards from them, eyes widening in alarm as one of the bugs flew into and through Veigar's face.

"Okay, yeah, you're right." Aryn admitted, a bit too quickly. "Lets accept that they're uncatchable and go to bed, and hope that tomorrow night things will have returned to normal." She seriously doubted the 'normal' Boreas was used to would not return quite so soon as tomorrow, but Aryn felt compelled to convince the child to stay as far away from these new creatures as possible, until at least they had more of an idea of what was happening now to the night.

In a nearby tree two squirrels begin chittering angrily at each other. At closer inspection, it appears the acorn they are fighting over shimmers a vibrant purple where it catches the light. You also find 2 mushrooms. Maybe these are worth keeping…
