Since he'd bested his sire, Levi figured it was time he ought to challenge his Mother. She wasn't a fighter, everyone knew it, but she'd always made a point of bragging about how fast she was. Intent on bringing her down a peg or two, Levi tipped his head back and called out for her once he'd finished roughly putting together a racetrack. A straight here to there, that didn't offer much time or space to dally about. Maybe after he beat both his parents he'd ask for a better rank, a pup like him deserved one right?

Till then though, he had to wait and like any pup patience wasn't a virtue he'd spent much time working on.

Levi didn't call out for her,  it simply wasn't something he did. So of course when the sound of his howl reached her ears, Hanako was quick and I mean QUICK to make her way down to the beach. Panting slightly, she took in the sight of the track he'd arranged. The lines were a little wobbly and scrawled but she understood him all the same, if he wanted to race who was she to say no?

Stepping inline beside him, Hanako offered her son a playful wink. Her baby or not she was gonna beat him, just to prove who really was the fastest in these parts and yanno, cause it's fun!

Waiting till his mother was settled, Levi pulled in a deep and steadying breath. This probably wasn't a big deal in the grand scheme of things, but it felt important, like he had to give it his all. He counted to three, the beats between the numbers long and predictable so that he couldn't be accused of cheating- and then... They were off! Kicking off into a sprint, Levi strained his muscles as he set into a dashing lope. His Mother seemed shorter than he remembered, but still her legs were considerably longer than his. This was gonna be yet another uphill battle, one he was eager to face.

Hanako could see how serious her son was taking this and the thought made her smile. In all honesty, she didn't quite get Levi. He was just so serious and didn't act like a pup at all, not like how he thought he would, so it was nice to see him in this light. To know he wasn't all bark and bite.  Kicking off in time with her opponent, Hanako tossed a glance in his direction as she sped along. He was young and inexperienced but he already had a really good racing form and didn't have to strain too hard to fall into rhythm. Even if he didn't beat her, he was fast. No one could deny that, and the thought made Hanako ever so proud.

The way his Mother practically soared over the sand made Levi's ears flick back in distaste. She barely looked like she was even trying, flouncing along and enjoying the wind rustling her coat. This was harder than he'd first thought, he was having a hard time keeping pace when she wasn't even really pushing herself, no doubt saving a burst of speed for when they approached the messily drawn finishing line. Digging deep, Levi forced his muscles hard, giving it everything he had as his paws thudded along. Whether it would be enough was yet to be seen, but at least he'd tried, right?

Sensing her son's mounting frustration, Hanako doubled down and pushed even harder, eager to bring this race to an end. Maybe she ought to play nice and let him win, his Father was rough on him as it was, but it was hard to let go of the one thing she truly excelled at. Diplomacy couldn't be made into a competition, so this was really the only thing she could win. As the finishing line drew close, she closed her eyes and savoured the wind and warmth of the sun. Oh how she'd missed this, it had been far far too long.
