Not what I expected

Chade had climbed up reasonably high rock that gave him a good view of the land below, beside him sat Swift. The boy imagined falling from up so high would end up pretty damaged, whether broken bone or, if he landed onto some of the nastier rocks at the bottom maybe do far worse. However, he hadn’t climbed up to see the pittfalls of falling but instead to look out over the land, seeing past the tops of the smaller tree’s and off to the ocean that was so vast.
They had only just arrived at the island the prior day and Chade had been quick to rest. It had been wonderful, resting without fear of being attacked was something he had once thought gone forever. “Home Swift, we have a home.”
The young cheetah nodded, it also clearly had lost its family though it had never said how. The cheetah was in that awkward stage of halfway grown, most of that extra fuzz of the child gone yet still he had further grow. “home.” His consent came with a note of pleasure as well.
Chade turned and started to head back down the rocky surface, “I wonder if many bears are out on the island or other dangerous predators,” the words were said with hope and imagination. Gone were the days of a child scared and wanting to run from predators. Now the boy was filled with a desire to grow stronger and that meant more challenging fights.
Swift’s ears folded back, less keen on the idea but staying quiet.
“We should check on Ry,” Chade added on, “He might be nervous, new place and all.” Of course, his brother might also be feeling adventurous and reckless, another reason all of its own to check on him. Ry was sometimes a bit too impulsive. Later he’d have to put more effort into meeting other wolves in the pack. Home, it felt great.

The crimson price was surveying his land. This island belonged to his family, his pack—and by extension, him. The Mendaciums would lay their claim here for generations to come, but his would be the first to stake the land as Elysium, be the first to govern and rule it, to tame it and truly make it theirs. Ah, how he'd missed this island! Saracyn did love Alias with all his heart. It was the one place that felt like a home to him. It was where he remembered growing up, where he'd survived the Long Night with his family, where Mom and Dad had said they'd live forever once their family was all together. It had taken too damn long in his opinion, but at last, they had their home, and they had their pack. Once more they were the rightful rulers, never to traipse the land like vagabond gypsies again!
But despite his happiness with having his home turf back under his paws, there was still a lingering pest in Saracyn's eyes. The two obnoxious orphan blue pups his mother had brought home. He'd watched how they tried to weasel their way in closer to his parents, acting like they were their own children. It was disgusting and pathetic and he hated the brothers for even existing. They weren't blessed like he and his sister were, they didn't possess the spirits of the Ancients nor share in the blood of the Mendaciums. They were lesser beings as far as he was concerned and seeing them cozying up to his parents pissed him right off. Avacyn was too docile and even-tempered to see it or do anything about it, but it irked him when the riffraff forgot their place.
Speak of the devil, here came one now. While Saracyn was prowling along the edges of the forest and mountain base, he saw one of the blue brothers coming down from somewhere higher up. He scowled, lips tensed in a fine line to prevent himself from snarling while he began to walk past. He only just caught the end of the last sentence the wolf was speaking to his cheetah companion and gave a harsh, barking laugh. "He's right to be nervous. When the rejects forget their place, they might end up getting hurt." He shot a cold leer to Chade as he stalked past him on his way, his thinly veiled threat and insult issued without a beat of hesitation or remorse. He wanted to put the lowborn back in his place.

Chade wasn’t one quick to anger and he certainly imagined all the adults in the pack were still stronger and smarter than he was. Manea and Alastor were amazing and were the equivalent of those hero’s you hope to be like in their fearless attacks against the other predators. At first, he had worried about Ricin and him being told to leave at some point as things were too good to be true but at this stage, he had finally been relaxing.
All that in mind he wouldn’t care if someone was looking down on him, insults and such to him would be fine. This threat was included for both Ricin and him. It was enough to have Chade run forward till he was squarely facing Saracyn, “Going to insult and keep walking?” The words flung down before the red and black wolf. “Why don’t you tell me plainly what you imagine as ‘forgetting his place’? My brother gets to enjoy life. He can be happy, have fun, and help support the pack.” Chade didn’t know if Ry had a plan on what role he’d want to fill but he knew his brother would work hard at it.
“You can fling any insult at me, be an ass, whatever but just me. Ry’s had enough shit dumped on him and the last he needs is a pile of shit upsetting him more.” Chade knew none of this would intimidate the guy clearly from the personality he was rubbing off. He wanted it clearly thrown out there though that if he hurt Ricin then Chade wasn’t scared to retaliate.

The sound of pounding paws coming up behind him did little to deter or alarm Saracyn, who maintained his frosty disposition all throughout Chade getting up in his face and trying to intimidate him. In fact, it actually incensed the near-yearling, his fur bristling at this lowborn wolf acting high and mighty. "Oooh, little runt wanna try playing the tough guy, huh?" he snarled back in Chade's face, lips peeling away from jagged shark-like teeth in a display of dominance and power. His tail flagged high over his back, pressing closer to boast his greater height over the other pup. "You think I don't see the way you two try to weasel your way in where you don't belong? Acting like my parents will ever look at you the way they look at me and my sister? It's disgusting—pathetic, really. You're both nothing but leeches sucking away at what isn't yours."
With every word he spoke, Saracyn fronted on Chade more, pushing forward to either bump his chest into the other wolf's, forcing him to either take steps back or try to hold his ground against the volatile prince. Cold cobalt eyes leered with malice and hate for the wretch before him. "You want to hear it plainly? Fine. You and your brother are useless wastes of life that never had a family worth keeping and never will. You should have taken the hint the first time around and just died out there in the wilderness. You're more useful as a meal to a bigger predator than trying to squeeze your way into a family that doesn't want you." Saracyn snapped his jaws in front of Chade's face with a threatening growl. "Is that plain enough for you, Blueberry?"
Without saying a word or giving away a tell, Saracyn had already begun shifting his stance and positioning his paws. He was preparing to strike out at Chade if the other wolf got ballsy and took a swing for him. Secretly, he hoped he did. He wanted to put the other wolf flat on his face then have a reason to bring his parents' wrath down on the boys for trying to attack the alpha family. He was daring Chade to make the first move, daring him to take the bait. He wanted the fight. He wanted to hurt him.

Chade was angry at the potential threat to his brother and didn’t give a damn about another wolf bristling up. It was a glare off for a moment, admittedly those crazy teeth were impressing things but there was nothing of higher priority to Chade than Ricin. Saracyn’s words surprised him at the pup's logic. Chade backed up as Saracyn moved forward, though he wasn’t letting his guard down.
Chade was glaring back at Sara for all the insults but it was mostly just for the sake of the asshole prince snarling at him than the words spoken. Chade was proud of how much he had grown in his abilities and in his own confidence as an individual with the ability to take care of himself and potentially even protect others in the pack. Neither history, family name, or expectations of pack status gave him any pride. It was enough to be allowed to be part of the pack. Blueberry, eh?
Once Sara was done forcing him back Chade took still another two steps back. There wasn’t a lot of space between them but it was something. He kept a scowl on his features but there was no sign he planned to attack. “We don’t expect Manea or Alastor to think me your equal. You’re their kid, I’m someone they allowed in the pack.” Would that make him happy? Did he want more? “You’re also right, I can’t claim any great family to prove my value or Ry’s." Dad was nice but, but he had died. Mom was alive but she didn’t want anything to do with them.
Chade shrugged off the next line, “Ry and I are just two nobody’s your parents let in the pack.” There, did that help Sara’s pride a bit? He swallowed before adding bitterly, “truth be told I’m jealous of what you have and I know I'll never get it. Bitter we were cheated of ever having parents like yours.” The last bit was spat out angrily, “I don’t expect parents, I just want a home for me and Ry.”
“That being said,” Chade went on, his glare deepening, “I’m not letting fate decide our future. We aren’t anyone important but we DO deserve to live. Fate or destiny or nature itself can throw at me whatever it wants. Ry and I will make it through it.”
The guy wanted a fight but he seemed to be hoping Chade was going to start it or, maybe he’d attack once Chade turned his back on him? “We just want a home,” the words repeated before adding on, “So, does that satisfy you?” If that didn’t satisfy him then too damn bad. The lofty ass would have to deal with their existence and if he tried to hurt Ry then Chade would rip him to shreds. Of course, if this wolf ever ended up in charge of the pack Chade and Ry would probably end up without a home on that day.
Chade stood his ground, squared up incase Sara attacked him but the young wolf wasn't about to start a fight with Alastor and Manea's child without better reason than being ticked off. If the guy attacked him though or made more insinuations of possibly hurting Ry then Chade would label it as more reason to get into a fight.
