Fastest Hooves On The Planet

The small ass has dragged the smart mouthed Kyren out to a flat area of land. The reindeer has been claiming to be the fastest of the group, spreading unfounded rumors among their group. But Oscar knows better. The grumpy donkey had protested that, the only reason the smug deer keeps beating him is because they only race in the snow and, he went on to say that, if Kyren ever raced him on solid land with no snow, the reindeer would be left in the dust. Well, the time has come to find out who is right. Coming to a stop, Oscar lets Nugget flap down to the moss-covered ground to peck out bugs and starts to mark out here the starting line will be. Long ears flick as he works, dragging a hoof along the forest floor to make a rough point to begin.
Once he is satisfied, the donkey straightens up and huffs proudly at the deer, flicking his long ears as he quirks a brow at Kyren. Oscar’s thick Irish tones pokes at the deer, saying, “Alright kid, you do know how to race… right? I mean without cheatin’.” The smug grin that pulls his lips apart is meant to taunt the younger reindeer. They tease each other, trading jabs and insults, but the words are all meant in fun. Well… mostly. Nodding to the marked line, the small donkey then tips his head in the direction of the lake that lays straight ahead of them and says, “First one that makes it ta the lake is the fastest that ever lived. Okay? Oh wait… the prize. Every good race has one. Which means, we have ta have a prize too. What is it going to be?” Tilting his head to look around, Oscar tries to think of something that would work.

Kyren was in an amicable spirit, his body moved with a relaxed gait but there was hidden mirth dancing in his eyes. Shorty wanted a race and seemed pretty determined to prove he wasn’t the slowest. Kyren did love to run of course and it was fun to tease Oscar. There was no way this wouldn’t be fun. If ol’ cagey Oscar somehow managed to win the race well, that’d be fine but Kyren had no intention of letting him win. The best prize had to be seeing Oscar grump more. Just thinking of it had a grin on his face. No one more entertaining to pick on than your best friends.
He paused where Oscar found a spot he liked. “How to race? Sure. It’s where I keep everyone else behind me.” A soft snort of indignation, “I only cheat if I need to.” Let Oscar decide if that meant he really would cheat or not. Kyren had no plans to upset a perfectly good race regardless.
“Fastest that ever lived huh?” Kyren mused the words over as he eyed the distance to the lake. “I figure the winner is going to have more racing to do in the herd as some others might think they are faster, ya know?” What would the winner get? “A prize? Hmm.. “ A grin came to the reindeer after a moment, “Winner is owed a favor. Gotta pay up whenever asked, whatever asked.”
It was a great idea. So great that Kyren added, "Ready, set, go" Kyren charged forward on the word go. It wasn't cheating to make sure Oscar was going to respond fast, right?

Oscar snorts an unamused laugh through his nostrils while giving Kyren an exaggerated eye roll as the deer explains what he thinks a race means. The smartass answers the deer’s smart quip by saying, “Just don’t be runnin’ into trees. Or trippin’ over any logs. Don’t need ta carry your heavy body back to camp.” Flashing his flat teeth in a smirk, the grumpy ass responds to the reindeer’s statement with a huge, amused grin. Thick Irish accent laces his jovial words as he says, “So, guess that means ya’ll be havin’ ta cheat a lot. I’ll be sure to keep that mind.”
Shaking his head, long ears flopping, Oscar goes on to explain the rules and Kyren asks about the rest of herd wanting the title. Small shoulders shrug as the small ass says, “If they want the title, they can challenge for it. Deal?” Right now, this is all about the ass and deer. And Oscar has a mighty need to leave the reindeer in the dust. Then he asks about the prize and Kyren comes up a great idea… not that Oscar will tell him that. He doesn’t need the deer getting a big head or anything. The donkey dips his head in agreement, saying, “Deal."
The ass is standing behind the starting line, pointed in the direction of lake, talking to Kyren when the sneaky deer starts the race. Braying out loudly, hoping to startle the reindeer enough to give him a chance to catch up, Oscar launches forward. Small legs pump, the sound of his own hooves thundering in his ears as the excited donkey rushes forward. His focus narrows, the only thing in his mind is to get to that lake… fast. Oscar leaps over a log, stumbling slightly when he lands but he manages to recover quickly. Focus broken, Oscar darts his eyes around to try and see where Kyren is.

Kyren smirked at Oscar’s words warning of tripping on things or needing to cheat. He didn’t bother responding yet, he could reply after he won their little race. Starting early questionable cheating? No one ever said he couldn’t do a surprise start after all. Clearly it was on Oscar to pay attention.
Oscar’s bray didn’t startle him, just had the reindeer lower his head and glance back with a grin at his smaller friend. There was a problem the reindeer hadn’t really thought about in all this. Sure, he was fast out in the open landscape but amongst all these tree’s where lower branches or spots of thicker foliage were getting in his way there were times Kyren had to slow down to duck or pivot about something.
Maybe Oscar would actually have an edge out here? The reindeer snorted in amusement as he had no plans to let short-legs Oscar beat him. The deer would never hear the end of it if his friend won this race! The lake was getting closer quickly, Kyren focused his gaze on it and picked up a bit more speed, growing a bit reckless on jumping over any objects that were between him and the lake. Old Oscar could eat his dust.

The bray doesn’t phase Kyren. Shit. Maybe Oscar does bray a little more than he should. Okay, okay. A lot more. He is an ass! Asses are loud! The small donkey just didn’t expect Kyren to be use it. Double shit. Curse the snow deer and his ability to ignore the ass’s loud noises. The small donkey races through the forest letting out a loud braying laugh as Kyren has to slow and pivot to avoid low hanging branches. Turning his head, Oscar calls out over his shoulder, “See?! Being tall isn’t always an advantage!”
Snorting in triumph, the grumpy donkey turns his head back to look at the road ahead. Oscar brays out in alarm as an extremely low hanging branch appears in this path. Small hooves pivot to try and avoid the brunt of hanging twig but his body still smacks into it, snapping it clean of the tree and giving the donkey a small, painful welt. Damnit that hurt! Stupid reindeer distracting him. That was totally, not his own fault. Nope. Never. As his small hooves pound onward, the lake grows closer and closer as Kyren moves closer… and closer.
Letting out a loud snort, Oscar pins his large ears back, lowers his head, and puts all his energy into making his legs to go faster. Truthfully, donkeys aren’t built to be fast, they are used more for their strength and stamina but that doesn’t stop this donkey from being determined to beat the long-legged (smartass) reindeer. Sure, Kyren is his friend and, while he always poking fun and taunting the small donkey just to see his reaction but Oscar kinda likes the kid. But not right now. He has to leave this deer in the dust. For his pride.
Oscar’s breathes come in great heaving puffs, his speed faltering when the deer comes out of nowhere and almost drives the ass off his path. He grunts, reaching over to give Kyren a small nip with his flat teeth as the donkey shouts, “No runnin’ over the other contestants! Stay over there ya silly deer!” His voice is gruff and breathy, the strain if running heard clearly in his voice. Yet… there is still mirth and the always major grumpiness underlying his words. They run side by side, the small donkey pushing his shorter legs to go faster while the deer with his stupid long legs seems to effortlessly move forward.
The lake appears in the distance and the ass brays out, “See ya at the finish line!” Pushing himself even more, the small donkey puts on one last burst of speed, running full tilt toward the lake. Legs stretch as far as they can before striking the ground, trying to cover the most distance that his short body will allow. Eyes narrow and the world focuses down to the finish line. This is it, the home stretch. The pair near the finish line, both striving be to be the first to cross it.
