Birna wasn't too proud to scavenge and when she heard the call of the ravens she was swift to follow. The birds were often the first to a kill and any food she could obtain without expending extra energy was well worth a short trip. Her own raven translated the calls for her and soon they arrived at an elk kill. She wasn't sure what had killed the elk though it seemed to be of an advanced age and may have fallen to age or disease. Either way she was not the only large predator at this kill. A large grizzly bear had just arrived, swiping at ravens and scattering them into the air as it began to feed. Birna wasn't dissuaded, carefully she crept toward the back of the elk, hoping to snag some meat before the bear noticed.

It wasn't typical of the pale spotted boy to make his way farther from home. He preferred the safety and serenity that the nook and volcano provided. What had convinced him to take a trip toward the northern end of Boreas was beyond him. Something in the pit of his stomach told him he needed to take some time to clear his head. That was at least the excuse he was giving himself as he prowled through the dense underbrush. Attempting to let his mind wander into the distance of nothingness, a scattering of ravens caught his attention. Glancing toward their flight path, he knew a bite to eat would be at the other end.

Making quick work to follow the feathered animals, he halted in his tracks when he spotted the dead elk, the slinking cat, and a rather pissed-off grizzly. Now, Ghoul wasn't small. He was rather large for his age and with his bulky muscles growing steadily, he figured this wouldn't take much to fend off the bear. Not that he was fond of cats, but the temptation of snagging some of the elk meat overcame him. Pushing from the shadows where he lurked, Ghoul leaped forward toward the bear to draw its attention away from the feline. Keeping his distance short enough so he could swipe at the bear's face without getting hurt himself, he tried to put some pressure on to move it away from the body.

Birna crept closer toward the elk kill but the bear looked up and locked eyes with her, a low growl rumbling from its throat. She paused, debating how far to push this. At that moment a young wolf leapt from the brush and swiped at the bear's face, drawing its attention. Now Birna's first instint was to rip off an elk leg and make a run for it but the behavior of the wolf, assuming he was some semblence of sane, made it seem like he was helping her out. Teaming up to chase off the bear so both could eat in peace? She could get on board with that. With the bear's back to her she sprang forward and in a few giant leaps she landed on the bear's back. Her fangs latched onto one of the bear's ears as her claws sank in deep. The bear roared, thrashing and bucking.

With the bear swiping its large paws at him, Ghoul had expected the feline to race away with her kill. It would have been the smart thing to do. Maybe he couldn't take the bear on himself, but if the cat could have gotten away safely, he could have run until the bear tired. To say that he was surprised when he saw the feline jump up onto the bear's back to bite down on its neck would have been an understatement. Eyes widening for a moment with distraction, he was glad the bear didn't continue swiping at him. Now turning toward the feline with ferocious swipes and roars, Ghoul gave his head a shake to bring him back to the threat at hand. If they didn't care the bear off now, they would surely be in trouble.

Taking a few steps back, he let his muscles coil up before charging in toward the bear's face. Leaping up to latch on to the bear's muzzle, he gave his body a few good shakes as blood sprayed onto him. Letting go quickly, merely missing a hefty swipe from the bear's paws, Ghoul danced around to lurch at the bear's leg. Continuing his dance of biting and leaping away to maim more areas of the bear's body, Ghoul waited for it to tire.
