A Gaping Hole Where My Heart Should Be

It was a dream. He knew it was a dream. The colors were a little too vibrant. The details were a little too fuzzy. There was a foggy haze covering the ground of the leafless forest and that fog was far too ethereal for the waking world. A massive moon illuminated the land, making the fog appear thick enough so that Chimera couldn't even see his paws touching ground.
Despite knowing that this was a dream, Chimera trailed the shadowy form of a great, black buck anyway. If he was here, he should at least make it worthwhile, right? The brutes gaze caught flickers of black between the tall, white trees and he knew that he was on course. The buck was leading him on a merry chase deeper and deeper into the foggy birch forest. Was it leading him to something in particular? That would be just like a dream. Chimera needed no lesson, no epiphany or anything of the sort, so he hoped not. He just needed to catch the antlered shadow.
Passing a thick stand of birch, the buck surprised him by leaping out from behind the trees and rocketing away down the natural path. Fog swirled across the ground in its wake and Chimera gave chase. Mismatched ears tucked back against the king's skull and his thickly muscled legs pumped. He flew over the land, a growl on his lips as with each stride he grew closer and closer to the heels of his prey.

There was nothing here, maybe because there was no she cared about here. She could have argued that she cared for her father and brother to some extent but, maybe that meant they were never dead. Or maybe they just didn't care about her and that's why she was all alone. Time never passed properly here. Sometimes she could see Cerberus, and sometimes she could see Chimera. But none of it was enough to give her any clear thoughts of how their lives were today or since the day she had passed. It was like she faded into this dream. Like somehow she was existing in nowhere and then there was fog and birch trees and soon a dark buck running by in the distance. She pursued as it felt normal to do so or maybe like it was calling her too. Finding her place beside Chimera was like nature to her, and maybe she thought she was living this dream instead of him. Viper was not as she was in the living world or at least not at the time of her death. She was maimless, not a single scar from her years of lacking self care. And her pelt was soft and beautiful as her mothers was and as her should be. Maybe she looked more like and angel of herself than the warrior she was back down on their earth. "Chimera" -- "Viper"

As Chimera ran, a second shape came up beside him. In the peripheral vision, he caught a flash of russet and obsidian fur and for a moment, he thought that he might have been dreaming of Cerberus. He couldn't spare much attention as he had to keep his prey within his sights, so after a few more yards of running, the brute snuck another glance. A gasp instantly pulled from the giant and his pace faltered for but a moment. Shock and surprisingly... heartache... struck the man in the chest like an arrow. There were many choices that he could have made in that moment but he chose the one that was most natural to both of them: he continued the hunt.
They ran as one, hemming the shadow buck in from either side. It was like no time had passed between them. Chimera followed Viper's silent cues and she followed his in turn. Together, they gained on the buck who, without Chimera's mental attention, had become nothing more than a blurred shadow. Still, every pounding paw brought them closer and closer until, with one leap, Chimera's muscled frame slammed into the buck, bringing them both to the ground. He was counting on Viper to make the kill now that he'd downed their prey. He was giving her the honor.

The two of them ran alongside each other, Viper felt like she was on air. Maybe she was, who knew the real makings of this place? Her paws careful on the foggy surface, she was not pounding as Chimera was. Maybe it was because she was dead, or maybe it was because this was Chimera's dream. She kept up without difficulty, Chimera then lunged forward at the dark deer. He held it for Viper to take, almost like a presentation. A gift. She didn't linger over the struggling, nonexistent shadow deer. Ripping into it's throat as her paws too found the surface of the faded deer, touching Chimera where he held onto it. She was oblivious, maybe, or at least acted that way. Like in the early days when they were getting to know each other and did many hunting trips outside of Ashen. She remembered who Chimera was, she couldn't forget here. But she was just here as a part of his dream, chasing down a kill or at least that was what her will told her. She was following the steps given to her. "Chimera" -- "Viper"

Together. Together they brought the shadow buck low. His bulk brought the animal crashing to the ground and Viper's teeth brought its blood flowing to the surface. The blood didn't stop. It pumped and pumped from the buck until the ground all between the white birch trees was deep red. The fog had dissipated enough to see that every square inch of ground, dirt, rocks, grass... all of it was blood red. Was this how he remembered them? Were their best times comprised of spilling blood? Both wolves held spatters of claret on their coats. Yes... these were their best times. Chimera looked at the woman, their kill forgotten. She looked whole and healthy. Not a single scar marred her perfect form and her goat shone brightly. Minted eyes sparkled and as soon as his gaze met hers, Chimera was closing the distance between them. Strong arms wrapped the small fae up in his embrace and he held Viper tightly to him. The man buried his face in the thick russet of his deceased lovers neck, inhaling the scent that was all Viper. A scent that he missed. Gently, Chimera lowered Viper onto her back, both of them still upon the dead shadow buck. The brute lowered himself down atop her, though sex was not on his mind. He placed his cheek upon her chest... and cried. Tears rose in the giant's mismatched eyes as he held the dead woman against him. "I miss you, Viper." His words were soft, but they held depths of sadness that the waking version of himself had never expressed. Viper was the first. She had seen the most base parts of him and had accepted them. He missed that. He missed her. So, he held the woman while he could, and he cried. "Chimera" -- "Viper"

Viper didn't move, didn't say anything as it once was between them. Her eyes looked up at Chimera as the kill was made, and he was grabbing her in his arms. She had been more forgiving in this afterlife, it wasn't like she was alive. She couldn't change the way things were between them no matter how badly she wanted to. But she couldn't dwell on that hate she had for him on to the day she died. Chimera meant more to her than anyone could really know. Her years of solitary made him more to her than he knew. She embraced him back, not much unlike her in life but Chimera was not as he was. This raw state he was in was something that she couldn't but never would tell another soul. It was a way she had never seen him before but one she could also feel and know. She didn't have emotions up here, but she did here in Chimera's arms. Her cheek pushed gently into his head as he found the plush surface of her chest. There were not tears, not for now. But they threatened to fall from her as well. She had lost so much through her life, and in the end the ultimate loss. Chimera had given her the only thing worth living for, surviving was not enough as was all she knew in her younger, and also most of her years. He had given her love and he had given her Cerberus, as much as she knew she wasn't what she could be for either of them. With a gentle squeeze around his neck, she responded, "I miss you too." Not just because she was dead and all alone here, but she missed him before her death. It was known. But she couldn't be with him. "I wish things could have been different. I wish you could have been different. I wish I could have been different." It was equal parts what they wanted for their lives that kept them apart, it was never meant to be for them. She wouldn't put anymore blame and hurt on him here. Viper wanted to be in Aliana's place now, maybe she would have been different then. Living most nights beside him and raising Cerberus together. He could have made her better than she was. It was meant to be this way because in the end she would have never been happy, and there may have been a time where she lashed out that he would be taking her life instead. "Chimera" -- "Viper"
