She somehow managed to finagle her way out of the den that day, probably only because her mother was asleep at that point of the day, but Akhlut wasn’t tired. She wasn’t ready for bed. So it wasn’t long into the day when she wiggled from the pile of sleeping bodies and wandered outside. The young girl was beginning to get to know the areas around the den site. The loose rocks and the sulfuric smell of the volcano were comforting and normal to her. What really held her curiosity was the pretty pink trees she could see from the mouth of the den during the daylight hours.

Akh didn’t really know the true reason her tiny mismatched paws drew her forward towards the magenta forest, but that was where she wanted to go. Her beautiful dual toned eyes took in the sights around her. The intense contrast between pink buds and dark bark had her attention as she swayed through the forest. She was so caught up in the magical grove around her, there was nothing else beyond. The young pup didn’t quite grasp her situational awareness, and she didn’t expect there to be anyone else up and about at this time of day. She was alone for the first time and would take full advantage of the fact as she meandered under the trees.

Enki has no trouble sleeping during the day. In fact, when his mother settles in for bedtime, the marbled boy is one of the first to rush up and settle in with her. As the pups pile in, the marbled boy always finds his youngest sibling, wrapping his body and legs around her so he can hold her tight while drifting quickly off to dreamland. That is where he is right now, paws running over rocky hills and under huge trees. Suddenly, he senses a void next to him and confusion tugs the boy back to reality, his small arms flexing to wrap more tightly around Akhlut as his groggy brain slowly awakens. Only… his legs hit each other and, with a raising sense of dread, Enki finds that Akhlut is gone.

Rapidly, he blinks his blurry, sleep-filled eyes, lifting his head to cast his gaze about the den while working to suppress the panic that raises in his chest. Sunlight filters in through the den opening and, as Enki turns his light blue gaze to it, he sees the tip of a white tail disappear into the brightness. Brows furrow and he works to extract his body from the pile without disturbing the others. It takes some time but the boy is finally able to free himself and he quickly makes his way to the entrance. The need to make sure his sister is safe drives him outside and, as he crosses the threshold, Enki is forced to stop and blink his eyes against the harsh brightness that greets him.

Standing there, trying to adjust to this new, more powerful source of light, the marbled boy makes the realization that he prefers the soft sunlight that twilight offers. Since he and his siblings have been raised to be nocturnal, it takes him a long moment to adjust to the daylight. When he can finally look around without feeling like his eyes are going to be burned right out of his skull, Enki is upset to find that his sister is not close by. A frown tugs his lips down but, as he looks down toward the other area that his mom says is pack lands, the marbled boy spies a small, white and brown form wandering toward the blossoming trees.

Ah, so that is where she is going. Swiftly, the boy makes his way toward his sibling, the need to protect her overwhelming his mind. Yet, as his small paws hit the grass, Enki suddenly stops and stares down at the green stuff with a sense of stunned awe. So far, Enki has only felt the rough stones of his den and the surrounding area in front of it but this… this feels… amazing. A smile plays along his lips as Enki takes a moment to wiggle his toes in the soft green blades and the feeling makes the boy’s tail wag happily. Taking a step, he relishes the way the dirt feels under his pads, the way it gives slightly as he passes yet remains solid.

He is so enthralled with this new development that, when he looks back up to find his sister, he realizes that Akhlut is getting further away. Giving a short, excited yip, Enki quickly falls into a trot and moves to catch up to her. The magenta trees seem to capture his youngest sibling’s attention as he makes it to her side but he doesn’t spare them a glance as he rubs against Akhlut in relief. Looking to her, he ducks his head and flattens his ears against his head in worry as he whispers, “Akh, what are you doing out here? You know, we are supposed to sleeping.” Even as he speaks, the boy allows his light blue eyes to turn and look up at the beautiful trees that surround them and he suddenly knows why she is here. This is paradise.


"Enki Klein"

The little princess slowed as her cream and caramel form reached the shade of the blossomed limbs above her. There were no giants in this forest, Redbud trees were small bush like plants to begin with, and the relative youth of the forest made the trees look reachable for a puppy like her. Like she belonged in these woods. It felt comforting to have the low hanging trees above her, used to the night sky above her, she felt safe and sheltered under here.

The green grass tickled her little pink toesies and the spring breeze tousled her soft fur as she entered the grove. Little pink blossoms caught on the gust and sprinkled all around her. The puppy felt like the forest itself was welcoming her as its princess. Her bright blue and lavender eyes could see the magic swirling all around her. She didn’t know of the dangers posed to her, or the harsh realities that hid around every corner. Her innocence clung to her as her dainty little paws carried her forward.

The spell was broken by the sound of a yip behind her though, and Akh knew immediately that she was found out. Lifting her pale paw as she turns her attention back up the path, it's hard to miss Enki racing up to her. Concern written all over his features as he rubbed his side against hers.

”I’m surveying the Kingdom.” The girl replied with confidence instead of a whisper, like she was supposed to be out here. ”What are you doing out here?” The clever girl rounded the question back on him. ”I wasn’t tired.”

The small pup rubs against his sister’s side while his light blue eyes look up at the pink blossomed trees. Their branches bow toward the ground and, while they are not huge, towering trees, to the small boy, they are giants. Enki looks to his sister as she speaks, eyes blinking in wide-eyed shock as she speaks of surveying the Kingdom. What kingdom? The den is where they sleep and mom says that this place is part of the packs lands but she didn’t want them out here alone. Her next question has his brows furrowing and a huff if given as he says, “I came looking for you. When I woke up were gone and I…”

His words fade away as he bites the inside of his cheek, not wanting to say that he was scared she might have gotten in trouble. Giving his head a shake, he scowls at her not being tired and says, “But we should be sleeping.” Being tired shouldn’t have anything to do with anything. If mom says they sleep they should be doing just that. Still, Enki refuses to leave his sister’s side so he settles for giving her an exasperated sigh and says, “Just… lets finish the survey quickly. Okay?” The grass tickles his paws and underbelly as they walk and the marbled boy reluctantly lets his eyes wander the beautiful area as they go.


"Enki Klein"

Akhlut was being naughty, and her big brother knew it. The young princess didn’t see it that way though. She was a princess, and her pretty little paws wanted to go. This was her home and she dared someone to touch a hair on her head. Her mother was the strongest wolf in Boreas, and no one could hurt her. There was nothing to fear. Especially not from here in this beautiful forest. Mismatched ears swiveled behind her as she heard the inflection of tones in Enki’s voice. Worry unlike any but their mother’s faded away and Akh turned back towards her brother from the beautiful trees.

The breeze played in her fur and the sun warmed her back. It was so different from the moon she knew so well. Ahklut felt incredible out here and alone, but Enki reminded her of what she was supposed to be doing instead of enjoying the beautiful day. ”I don’t want to be sleeping though. I want to play in the sun.” To prove her point her ivory and caramel paws carry her forward under the dappled foliage, her eyes lifting to the magenta blossoms above them, wanting to lead Enki into the adventure with her.

As much Enki worries about his sister, about what might happen if someone catches them, the marbled pup cannot help but be mesmerized by this beautiful place. The sun warms his pelt, confusing and fascinating the pup at the same time. But they are not supposed to be here. Emotions war inside the pup as his pale blue eyes watch the way the breeze tickles the branches of the redbud trees, causing the leaves to rustle and creature their own music.

Doubt weighs Enki down, stopping him from fully enjoying the feel of the grass under his paws or the way the wind plays with his fur. Akh speaks and her voice pulls his gaze to her, a frown tugging the edges of his lips down. Small paws hesitate as he watches his ivory and caramel sister, wanting to follow but worried about the ‘what if’s’ that swirl through his head. But Akh keeps moving, confident in herself and the safety that the pack lands offer.

Letting out a soft sigh, the marbled pup trots to catch up to his sister and gently presses into her side. With a soft, uncertain air to his words, Enki says, “Fine Akh, we can play. What do you want to do first?” While worry still lingers in the pup’s eyes, there is a new excitement that resides in them as well.


"Enki Klein"

The young princess was absolutely fearless as her delicate paws carried her through her native lands. She wasn’t in any danger here, she knew. Despite her mother’s worries that lingered even now, Akhlut was brave to the point of foolishness. Not that she would escape past the borders. She knew better than to do that, but there were enough eyes in the pack to keep their safety assured. Akhlut could feel the tension in her brother though, and she knew it wasn’t for his own safety, but hers. She hoped he would chill out, but as she caught his gaze she could see the need for adventure in his eyes.

He gave her way, relenting with a heavy sigh. Akhlut grinned as he caught up with her and relented to whatever game she wished to work on first. Akh never stopped moving her slender legs, but she was glad to have Enki along beside her. ”Fine.” She teased him, bumping against his shoulder playfully. ”Lets explore! Look at all the details you can see in the sun! There’s so many colors and shades you’d never really see at night.” She told him as she strode forward, leading him around the vibrant magenta flowered trees.

Enki could care less if he got in trouble or some big scary monster came to attack him… but Akhlut? Since they were born the marbled pup has felt the need to stick close to her, to protect her from any threat. Adventure calls him as they walk but he tampers it, reminding himself that he has to stick close to his sister. Oh, how he would love to stretch his short legs and run under the magenta flowered trees. To laugh as the breeze combs its fingers through his fur. To feel… free.

No, Akh comes first. He relents to her wishes, internally excited to be out here in the daylight and enjoying the many colors that the day offers. His sister teases him, earning herself a stuck-out tongue but, as she playfully bumps his shoulder, a small laugh escapes the marbled pup. Enki nods as Akh speaks, pale blue eyes sweeping the land around them. It is difficult to remain so serious when he is surround by this… splendor. A content sigh rolls past his lips and he glances to Akh, offering her a wide, lopsided, happy grin.

These are the days he will remember, when the sun lights up his sister’s white and cream fur. The way her coat stands in stark but magnificent contrast to the greens, browns, and magentas that surround them. Unable to hide his joy anymore, Enki lets out a happy laugh and bounds forward a few steps, tail wagging cheerfully as he looks to Akh. Lifting his eyebrows, the marbled boy says, “What do you say to a race, Akhlut? First one that the end of the row gets to decide where we go next!” Eyes dance with excitement as he looks to his sister, wanting to enjoy this day to its fullest.

"Enki Klein"

Ahklut was a proper Klein princess, and that meant that she didn’t need to look to anyone but herself for protection. She would be telling a lie if she didn’t admit how much of a comfort Enki was, always hanging over her shoulder. Always there for her to count on. He was a great big brother. However tense he was as he kept up his defenses just in case something happened, she could still see the moment that he truly opened his eyes. Enki opened his eyes and realized the wonder that was all around them, the sun that revealed a whole different world they lived in.

He relaxed a little, a soft sigh from his lips as she teased him and led him along in the sun dappled forest. Enki was smiling, and that was all that Ahk wanted to share with him. She grinned and strode forward, letting the sun’s light douse her coat. Her mismatched paws nearly danced beneath her as Enki spoke again.

”A race?” She questioned lightly, her grin widening as her blue and lavender gaze sparkled mischievously. ”Yeah, let's race!” Before there could be any countdown Ahklut began their race forward. Her slim frame coiling and exploding in speed underneath the pink branches of the trees.

Enki beams a broad grin at his sister, the challenge of a race laid at her paws. Akh accepts and, as the marbled boy spins around to face the direction of their finish line, words building to explain the rules and countdown; they suddenly die unvoiced in his throat. His sister rushes past him, beginning their race in her own way.

A sharp bark follows after her caramel and white form as Enki stumbles over his paws in an effort to catch up to her. Legs churn and he falls into a rhythm as he thunders after his beautiful sister, eyes narrowing into silts as Enki focuses on reaching the finish line first. The magenta trees blur by, the wind whips past his ears and it ignites the marbled pup’s joy and excitement as his heart thunders in time with his paws.

"Enki Klein"

Akh and her brother were both all smiles as they initiated the race. The little princess was just excited to fully extend her legs, to dance in the sunshine and the warmth of the day. Both of them twisted and contorted to make their way towards the finish line. Akhlut’s little cream and mocha legs carried her with a swiftness that she had never achieved before.

Enki was behind at first, but his longer legs had him keeping up with her easily. Akhlut wouldn’t give up easily though, and her little legs kept pumping beneath her. Stride after stride she tried desperately to reach the finish first.

Enki watches his sister pull away from him and he laughs, enjoying the day and this time he gets to share with Akh. Short legs stretch out as far as they will go as the two young pups race as if this is the most important thing in the world. Small paws strike the ground, drumming out a rhythm as they sprint underneath the magenta trees.

At first his sister’s cream and mocha coat was in front of him but he is quick to catch up and the pink boy puts every ounce of energy he has into finishing in first place. A competitive spark is already alive in Enki and this only helps to feed it, the urge to come out first pounding through him in time with his heartbeat.

The finish line quickly approaches and Enki lowers his head, eyes narrowing as the world dissolves around him until it is only him at the end point. Win or lose, Enki has enjoyed the run!
