Feeling Alive [AW Race]

Come down, come down sweet reverence
Jynn lingered around the battlefield, looking to make the most of her time here in sparring. At least, that had been the original plan but after it had rained over the night she found herself wishing to race someoen across the battlefield. There was a freshness in the air after a nice spring rain, with the sun breaking over the horizon that just made her feel alive. There was no better pairing for that feeling than running full tilt across the open terrain. Now if she could find someone who would be interested in a race instead of a spar. Or maybe a race as a warm-up and then a spar? She was up for either! Tipping back her head Jynn called for a racing opponent.

Dime was strolling about the blood-stained field, just prowling for trouble, when the call reached his ears. He loped in the direction for only a few minutes before coming upon the long-legged orangey wolf -- one he'd met before -- who had presumably called out. A race, huh? Dime might be short, but he was fast. He figured he had a chance, and anyway, it was all in fun, probably. Nobody really got hurt racing that he'd ever known of. A rolled ankle here or there, maybe -- besides the bites taken and one wolf lamed for life that he'd seen in one particularly rough one as a pup. Luckily he'd been much too young for even those guys, who had all seemed to grow up long before their turn, to allow him to participate. But that race seemed like it had been an outlier. He always got weird looks the few times he had told the story, at least, and that seemed like a good sign for the sanity and moral values of most racers. Small ponds dotted the landscape, which didn't look like they'd be fun to accidentally fall into, but he was confident in his ability to see a three-yard pool from enough distance to go around it. He wasn't blind yet. Although it was only a matter of time, given his recklessness. There were a couple of rocks, too. Same strategy to deal with them as with the ponds. Nodding a little to himself, he lined himself up next to Jynn. "Where to?" he asked, both in practicality -- he did need to know where they were running to, after all -- and as means of a sort-of greeting. "Speech" |

Come down, come down sweet reverence
Jynn's ears perked up as she heard someome coming. They swiveled like radar dishes til she picked up the source and saw a short, pale man arrive and ask where they were running to. She grinned, tail wagging with excitement. "Name's Jynn, happy to race ya! See that scraggly pine in the distance over there? The one with the bend toward the top? First one there is the winner." Ok, now they needed a fair way to start. She glanced around then spied a small rock. "I'll toss up this rock, when it hits the ground we go." She grabbed it in her jaws then pranced back over to the man, lining up with him before she tossed the rock up and slightly away so that it wouldn't come down and hit them.
The moment the rock landed she leapt forward and took off toward the pine tree. She was fast but sometimes her long limbs got tangled up beneath her. She focused on long, even strides.

The woman introduced herself as Jynn and said she'd be happy to race him. "Dime's m'name," he said, his tail wagging a little faster for a beat to match hers. He nodded as she pointed out the "scraggly pine" they'd be racing towards, not too far away but enough that it would take a few minutes or so to sprint to. Good. Dimosthenes was fast, but he tired quickly, so a sprint race would be better than a marathon, but he did want to have a bit of time to catch up if Jynn got a fast start. Jynn threw the rock up and Dime watched it rise and fall like it had a death wish and he was a vengeful genie. When it hit the ground, he was off like a shot. Jynn was fast too, though, and the two of them were neck-and-neck. Dime pushed himself on, even faster, eyes pinned to the pine. He focused on his own movement, strides eating up yard after yard, and slowly pulled ahead an inch. Jynn kicked off hard with her hind legs, trying to do her best to propel herself forward. She panted as she ran, trying to get a smuch oxygen as possible for truth be told she was more of a sprinter than a long distance runner and she sought to get as much distance as she could. Dime was proving a challenging opponent though for before she knew it they were running even, neck and neck. They were getting closer to the pine tree and she could see Dime starting to pull ahead. She shifted her focus from her opponent and instead focused on the finish line, taking big gulps of air and pushing her muscles as hard as she could to find every inch of speed she possessed.

Dimosthenes kept going, still at top speed, his legs and lungs beginning to burn -- not uncomfortably, yet, but he definitely wasn't used to sprinting long distances. He ran all the time, of course -- he was a wolf -- but that was typically a gentle sort of lope that he could keep up for hours. This was an all-out sprint. He hauled more air into his lungs with each deep breath, letting each breath carry him faster and faster. It felt like that, at least. He stayed right by Jynn's side, though, not pulling forward or falling back. They were a good match, it seemed, and Dime was pushing himself to the very limit of his speed. The target tree was getting nearer and nearer with each strike of paw on earth. Dime was fully prepared to slam right into the tree if it meant winning, although he figured running past it would probably work just as well. He didn't want to try to slow down to touch it gently, in case Jynn meant just running past it.
