Her petite frame braced against the chilly wind. As summer drew to a close and autumn brought forth early snow, Celeste noticed. Herds that would typically linger in the grassy plains now moved south way before the leaves even began to turn brown. She could see the panic in their eyes as they rushed their expectant mothers and fresh little ones quickly out of the north. Flocks of birds scattered as if they had no idea how to migrate anymore. Confusing and concerning as it was, Celeste would take the opportunity for an easy hunt. When the herds were all out of sorts, they wouldn't notice a missing babe here or there. Standing on the outskirts of the plains, she watched. Silently, her monochrome body was hidden neatly against the shadows of a tall pine. Ahead of her, spread out, a large herd of elk wove across the dying grasses. Flakes of wet snow dampened her coat as she waited. Patient as ever, Celeste allowed the sun to rise over the edge of the horizon. She could tell they were exhausted, worried, and spent on energy. Picking one off would be easy, but which one? |
