he finds it washed up by the falls, twitching incrementally as the last vestiges of life drain from its body. a squirrel, it’s head wrenched at an unnatural angel, blood spotting it’s russet fur. it’s eyes bulge and dart frantically from side to side, a small pink tongue killing between a pair of blood-stained jaws. it’s a truly gruesome sight, and it stirs up an intrigue in the young boy he has not felt since the first time he and his siblings had emerged from their den. it’s like his world has been thrown into startling clarity, gaining a sharp, realistic edge to it that so often evades him. he approaches the dying creature on quiet paws, coming to a halt mere inches from its wretched figure. cautiously, Ume lifts a paw and pokes, blinking when it warbles in agony and tries to thrash away from him.
