Summer brought with it a hoard of complications not the least of which was a disgusting miasma of heat. He certainly didn't feel like moving around in it and if he could have shed himself bald he would have. As it was Simon was forced to suffer the heat in his short, thick coat. He was lucky it was a pale color, but it was still one more block between his skin and the too infrequent breezes. He slumped on the arched, gnarled root of an ancient and massive tree. He couldn't have told you what kind it was by now, he hadn't looked at it since selecting it and then only long enough to decide that the root was a perfect resting place. His paws dangled over either side of the root, cementing him in place as they dipped into the water that ran as a shallow river under the upraised and exposed natural anchor.

With a great yawn he moved his head from the side to rest his chin on the rubbed-smooth bark. Something, or someone, had used this root often for the same purposes. It even had the faint impression of a body on it where weight had pushed down and use had worn it away. Funny how trees could suffer the same signs of use that rocks could. Funnier still how a rock would have been a more welcome bed of comfort than the tree. There was a knot digging unpleasantly into his gut. He groaned and slipped over, rolling off the tree to splash into the water on his back. Wriggling her grinned. Maybe his belly was a little empty because of the summer induced lack of game and maybe it was unpleasant out but he could still enjoy splashing in the water.

With a grunt of satisfaction he lifted himself from his impromptu bath and examined the tree root. Was it worth ending up on top of that most uncomfortable knot? A gnat buzzed by his ears quickly followed by a tiny swarm of equally tiny, black, buzzing insects. He sighed. No, no it was not worth that knot. It was not worth the gnats and it certainly wasn't worth the sticky sweat he'd just washed away. He left the mottled shade of the enormous tree to find a new perch, walking with his paws shuffling the water of the river he'd bathed in.

ooc: sorry for crappiness, will get better.

She had been watching from a distance, dark gaze locked onto the target. A wolf, laying on the roots of a tree, then rolling off and into the water below. Her tail swung calmly behind her, ears twitching from a few small bugs pestering her. Cana had been laying in the shade when she smelled another nearby, and curiosity brought her to where she was hiding, spying on the wolf. With a grin she would slowly creep forward, moving silently, not once taking her eyes off the wolf. Inch by inch she moved, pausing every few steps in case the wolf heard her, then continuing on. Just a few feet away now... Suddenly she jumped forward with a bark, not quite aggressive, just to grab his attention.

He jumped, spun and wagged his tail at the bark. That was something new. It meant someone was there, with him! He could play or at least alleviate his boredom now! He gave a low, woofing rumble of a bark in greeting and half bowed at the stranger, stretching his body with a groan. His brown eyes scanned the tangle of tree roots and river around him before finally resting upon the canine that had greeted him. "Well hel-looooo" he gave her a lopsided grin and sat down. His long, thick tail whumped the ground with a soft thump-thump-thump as he wagged it. Whatever could she be doing here? He tilted his head, watching her. The deep liver of his ear tips blending in the shadows so that it looked as though the tips were missing.

Her tail wagged crazy behind her body, tongue hanging out the side of her jaws as she watched the wolf turn around with his own tail wagging, barking back in greeting. ?Hi wolf! I Cana!? She yipped, hopping back, lowering the front half of her body to the ground. A new friend to play with. ?Hey wolf guess what!? She would jump up then lunge forward, nipping at his neck before whipping around and racing off a few feet. ?Your it!? She took off behind a cluster of tree curtains, laughing trailing behind her.

"Nice to meet you, Cana. I'm Simon." he grinned and dropped to a playful bow, his tail jutting straight up into the air. He wiggled his hind end and prepared to pounce forward playfully when she surprised him with the first pounce. He yelped out of shock and hell over trying to avoid the friendly nip. She'd already ducked behind a tree when he scrambled back to his feet, tail wagging and tongue falling from his mouth. He laughed and gave chase.
