A Stone's Throw from Death

Peregrine had not expected a mountain range quite like this so far from the north, but she was glad to have found one. Her homeland was rugged and somewhat similar, full of pine forests and crags. These peaks were stilled capped in snow and the dark rocks which made up their mass looked to be made of cold iron. Below them the forest was green and rich with spring growth but it could only creep so far up the slopes. She'd found an old trail worn into the side of one of the lower peaks and planned to climb all the way to the top. You know, assuming she didn't fall and snap her neck or get dashed to pieces on the rocks below. Or both. She turned to look behind her, where she expected Karabela to be following her trail and said, "You know, this reminds me of the day I met you. Mayhaps we ought to push some boulders down into the valley below for old time's sake!" She allowed herself to laugh and then spent a moment marveling as she heard it's weak echo travel back up the slope to meet her. Tsriy was not quite so amused, and maintained a tight grip to the back of her neck.

This land was awesome! Karabela panted, tongue out and tail wagging happily as she carefully maneuvered her body up the craggy landscape. Ivory caps stood out starkly against the dark rock beneath like a beautiful veil masking the deadly slopes with mesmerizing beauty. She could definitely see herself living in a place like this. "Now this is a territory!" She turned to Peregrine with a grin. "Now that sounds like a marvelous idea!" Carefully readjusting her footing Karabela shifted her weight to her left limbs as her right forepaw scratched at a nearby boulder about the size of a badger. With a few calculated swipes it gave way and promptly tumbled down the side of the mountain, cracking and breaking into smaller pieces as it went. The sound echoed strangely about them and with a gesture that clearly said 'after you' Raba would turn the next event over to Peregrine. "Show me how it's done o' grand rock master!"

Peregrine pressed her lips into a tight line, thinking hard about the task at hand. She scanned the trail ahead of them, taking a long moment to decide which rock was just right in the face of the challenge bestowed upon her. Finally she picked one not too large that she could not move it but just large enough to make of hell of a clamor. She trotted over to it, glee evident in her upright tail and the swish of her hips. She gave it a gentle push, not trying to move it at all but rather testing it's weight. Finding it to be satisfactory and sent Raba a wider grin and put her back into it. It took a bit of rocking but at long last the stone gave way and plunged down the slope. CRASH!!! it smashed against another boulder and sent it rolling, BANG! SMASH!!! The fragments collided with another three. A small avalanche of stone (barely noticeable against the work of mother nature herself,) cascaded down the rock face. She turned to her companion with a shit-eating grin and gave her a mock bow. "Your turn, if you think you can top that!" She was eager to see what the darker dame would be able to rustle up, more than entertained by the simple, age-old pleasure of breaking things and making noise.

Karabela shifted from side to side in excitement she hadn't felt since she was very small and she felt herself suddenly very taken with Peregrine. It had been so long since she'd just had a good time like this. Doing silly things that really didn't accomplish any task other than making her smile and laugh. Golden eyes watched her companions movements as the other woman trot over to a massive boulder. Karabela quickly scaled the rock face to keep up with the other woman and to make sure that she wouldn't be in the line of fire. Moving back a bit she watched with glee as Peregrine leaned against the rock and after some rocking sent it tumbling down the mountain and making an absolute ruckus.
Raba laughed and shook her head. "I'm not sure if I can top that but I'll try… hmmmm let me see." She gaze about her before her eyes fixed on the mother-load about 30 feet up. A large rock about the size of a bull elk was perched precariously upon a set of smaller boulders. Oh yea that would do! Karabela started climbing up towards it but turned to Peregrine. "This one may be a team effort I think."

At first Peregrine scrambled out of the way, having seen the rock Karabela had her eye on. No way did she want to get smushed by that! Of course, when the other fae pronounced it a team effort, she clambered up the slope more than gleefully. "Bring it on, boulder!" she hooted, excited by the challenge. This behemoth of stone was more than one wolf could work with, possibly more than two, but it was placed so precariously near the edge that Peregrine held her hopes up high. She placed her shoulder against it, finding the best possible position before locking her silver eyes with the other woman's golden counterparts, an exuberant glint having taken hold there. "One... two... THREE!!!" She put her back into it to say the least. Pushing with all the force afforded to her and only hoping that her friend was doing the same, Peregrine waited for the first sign that the boulder was doing anything other than resisting them. She knew it would make a clamor loud enough to rouse the gods if they managed it, but at this point she could only hope!

Karabela examined the boulder more intently before picking an angle and waiting for Peregrine to join her. Oh yea, she was definitely not moving this thing by herself. Raba placed her shoulder against it as Peregrine did the same and she leaned into it, getting a feel for the affect of her weight which was pretty much negligible. Her garnet eyes locked with Peregrine's gaze and on the count of three her powerful legs pushed with all their might as the boulder shifted slowly…. slowly…. "C'mon boulder! MOVE!" As if answering her spoken command some of the smaller rocks suddenly shifted below the larger one as the massive rock rolled down the mountain side. THUMP! CRASH! THUMP! It rolled farther and farther until it hit a fallen tree and was launched into the air. It sailed for a few moments before landing with a crash on another large rock and splitting in half. The two halves continued their way breaking down into smaller and smaller pieces. Karabela turned to Pere with a smile on her face. "That was sweet!" Panting she sat down. "I think I need a breather though. It's about time we start down the other side of the mountain. I'd like to get to the Battlefield before dark if we can."

Peregrine had almost given the boulder up for lost when suddenly she felt it begin to shift. Or wait, was that her imagination? She almost toppled down the mountain after it when it finally did give way, but stumbled to a halt at the last moment. Whew, that was close! It careened down the mountain with breathtaking force, and she was certainly glad not to be on the receiving end of it's impact. She winced when it collided with the tree, 'ooh'ed and 'ahh'ed as it sailed through the air and cackled as it split into smaller and smaller fragments. "Well done us!" she heartily proclaimed. Karabela called for a bit of a rest and Peregrine was more than happy to oblige, sitting down on her haunches and breathing hard. For not going very far themselves she sure was out of breath! Then again, if her pup self had seen what she'd just done she would have been head over heels. After all, it was pretty epic! She was glad for the break, although she agreed that she couldn't linger there forever, as much as she wanted to continue aiding in the erosion of the monolithic mountain. Maybe some other day! She turned to the woman she now heartily called a friend and smiled. Onward and upwards, she supposed!!... She slid down into a sphinx-like position and continued her panting. Well, maybe in a minute.

Karabela took in the silence for a moment as she focused on catching her breath. Befriending Peregrine had been a real blessing. It had been awhile since she'd felt so close to another wolf and the woman had the best ideas for entertainment. Golden eyes glanced at the sun and Karabela sighed as she got to her feet. "Well, I suppose we ought to get going… oh boy! It's a long way down huh? C'mon I'll race ya!" Laughing she started her descent, agile, powerful limbs maneuvering over the rocky terrain at a respectable pace but not so break-neck that she risked… well… breaking her neck.
