Beware, Beware, Be Skeptical

Their Smiles, Their Smiles of Plated Gold

He hadn't really been out this way, but today he would. Normally he stayed sulking in his own secret hole near the den, hidden away beneath the fallen branches and foliage of an old pine. But it was only a matter of time before one of his siblings might find it, so he had to find something else just in case. The dual toned boy walked along the borders, the warning from his alpha echoed in his head, but would it matter? He'd been studying the borders, and the time in between patrols was quite the long gap. Besides, with the snow melt and mud, he'd be able to hide his scent easy. He was too smart for all these dumb adults, and a couple more seasons he'd be a year old. "And rules were made to be broken." He murmured. He would step across the borders, not too far, but enough where on the off chance someone did pass by, they wouldn't see him right away.

Kharnage was still debating leaving again. His paws itched to go on another adventure. A part of him wanted to find Regulus for another fighting lesson, but that was a long way away. Would Avalon be upset with him if he was gone that long? Probably. He had "duties" to attend to and a whole lot of nothing to accomplish. He hadn't heard jack shit from his mentor yet and it was starting to irk him. He didn't want to wait around to learn things like he had all his life. He was almost two come the next season and he'd be an adult. How was he supposed to be an adult when he didn't even know how to properly fight?

So he stalked off to the borders. If he couldn't go see Regulus then he was going to do something else. He wasn't sure what it was but it sure as hell wasn't going to be a border patrol. If someone was stupid enough to waltz into pack lands then that was their problem and someone else could deal with it. For him he padded along it and didn't pick up on the scent of the pup at all. He came to a halt and sat not too far past the border and stared out past the pines as he debated his next moves, not even aware of the kid nearby.

It was...interesting out here. But he wanted to go further. The boy cast a glance behind him, and so far he spotted no one. The boy grinned, maybe this could be his chance to sneak off...but first. He doubled back to the borders, walking all around just inside it and retracing his steps back to where he'd first exited, then with a satisfied snort he dashed back around and left a different way. If anyone caught his scent, maybe that would stall them long enough for him to get back and play dumb.

He waltzed out of the border, a smug look on his face as he looked back. That'll show those dumb adults that he could outsmart them! Snorting, he didn't realize he was on a collision course towards someone else who had the same idea as he did. Not until he looked forward, he would collide face first into Kharnage's backside. The boy fell back onto his haunches, nose throbbing as he shook his head. Blue eyes refocused, and he'd look up. "Crap..."

Kharnage was enthralled with his own thoughts. He'd sat down and stared for a little while debating on whether or not he should leave again. If he left he'd possibly have to hear it from his mother and the every-so-prized heir, but then again he'd have a lot more fun out past the borders. So far, since returning, all there had been was meeting after meeting after meeting. The training originally excited him, but now he didn't look forward to it at all. To him this pack was full of suck ups and strangers and he didn't like it one bit. Not that he'd taken the time to get to know them but he didn't really want to either.

He was mulling over his options, grumbling internally about everything lately, when he felt something ram into his back side. Surprise laced though him and he'd automatically turn around to snap viciously at the thing, but his jaws would fall short and close with an audible click around air. It was a pup. Just one of those stupid pups from the meetings - though this one wasn't one of his siblings. It was sprawled out in the dirt pathetically and clearly had been up to no good judging by the word that came from it's mouth. Not that he cared what the child did, but he hadn't appreciated being ran in to.

"What are you doing out here?" He'd question with a raised eyebrow. He was now pretty irritated. He now was stuck babysitting to make sure another one of that male's children didn't run off. Couldn't he keep a handle on his stupid kids?

Any other kid would have flinched in the face of someone who nearly took his nose off. But Greed didn't even blink as his glittering blue eyes stared at the larger boy before him. It was funny. The longer he stared at the bigger boy, the more he noticed they were almost similar in color. Eyes included. Heck, it even looked like they had the same attitude. Greed would stand and shake out his fur, the throb in his nose slowly going away as he composed himself and held a steel gaze with the yearling. "What's it to you?" He said coolly.

He was completely unafraid of what might happen, whether he got into trouble or not. Technically, if anyone asked, he was out here with an adult. At least, this guy looked like he'd be a year soon. But that brought a flicker of irritation to him too. He did not want to be babysat. He didn't need to be, if anyone tried to mess with him then he'd rip them a new one!

He was surprised by the lack of fear this kid displayed. Most children would have shrunk back, fear on their face, and stared at him with wide terrified eyes. He felt no remorse for almost biting the child's face off. In his mind he should have been looking where he was going and it was his fault he'd run into him. He was a little sad that he hadn't been able to rile up a reaction from him, but oh well. Overall Greed's expression was cold and rather defiant as he stared up at him. He didn't know how to feel about that.

"Unfortunately you little pipsqueaks have to be babysat." He retorted. "My Mom is still upset your sibling is gone as well as your mother, so yeah, don't think she'd forgive me if you disappeared and I was the last one to have seen you."

He was a little grumpy about that. All his plans were now ruined. Personally he thought that they were old enough to make their own decisions and if they were stupid enough to get kidnapped or eaten after leaving the territory then that was their fault. That or it was on their parents for not watching them properly. It shouldn't take a whole damn pack to watch a couple of kids.

Well, this guy was just as grumpy as he was. And he didn't know what to make of it really. He guessed they would just have to have a grump off or something, but Greed was too smart for that. His ears flattened a bit when the big boy called him a pipsqueak. But his gaze still did not waver, even when his mom and sister were mentioned. But, he knew where they had gone. At least, it was what he assumed anyway. After all, sheet his dad mentioned his mom's brother, it was only logical right?

"I don't need a babysitter. And I'm not a pipsqueak." His voice stayed smooth, calm, no indication that he was riled up or scared or...any emotion, really. "Besides, I won't tell if you won't." That was an even trade, right? A glint of mischief lit the boy's eyes, and wondered if maybe he could take advantage of the situation. He could give this guy the run around, or mess with him, maybe even hint about the whereabouts of his mom and sister. But whether this male cared about any of that or not was beyond him. But he'd chance it, " 'Sides, I already know where they are." The slightest hint of a smirk rose, revealing just the smallest glint of a puppy fang.

Kharnage couldn't help but chuckle as the pup disagreed with being called a pip squeak. He shook his head and even went so far as to argue with him. He didn't care if it was immature or not. "You're smaller than me and a child therefore you're a pipsqueak." He was glad to hear that Greed also believed he didn't need a babysitter either. baby implied that they were babies and with how big all of them were they certainly weren't babies. Immature and helpless kids yet... but baby, no. "Trust me, I don't wanna babysit."

Greed seemed to have a mischievous side though. An eyebrow rose as he said he wouldn't tell if Kharnage didn't. He didn't like the idea of tattling so he nodded in agreement. He didn't care if the pups explored and did what they wanted. They weren't his kids and he shouldn't have to watch them. If they went off on their own that were the parents fault and that was the end of that. "Alright. It'll be our secret." He agreed.

He was surprised when Greed mentioned that he already knew where his mom and sibling was. An eyebrow rose further now. How could some kid, who probably hadn't even really left pack lands, know where a wolf and pup were when full grown adults couldn't find them? That sounded absurd. "Oh yeah? Where?" He believed the boy was bluffing and his tone relayed that as he talked.

The larger boy was insistent on calling him a pipsqueak, and his eyes narrowed at Kharnage. He could knock him a good one, he could! But he wouldn't, not yet. He still had exploring to do, and he'd be damned if he let this big oaf ruin his fun! So his only response to that was a gruff "Whatever you say numb nuts." Yeah, he went there. He knew the boy wasn't quite a full fledged adult yet, so chances were his balls hadn't completely dropped yet. At least, that's what he'd heard squirrels argue about. So it had to mean something, right? He was glad, however, when they both agreed to not telling. That was good. He didn't want to be babysat, and this guy didn't want to babysit. It was a win win.

It was then that he asked him where his mom and sister were, and Greed's grin widened a little more, blue eyes twinkling. "To find my uncle of course." He lifted one paw, raising it up to pull a clump of dirt out from his nails. He eyed Kharnage, doubting that he believed him, but there was no harm in trying to make him believe it. "I heard that my mom's brother -Isardis - was one of the greatest kings. He used to rule these lands, so my mom went to find him and bring him back to reclaim what belongs to him." His tail flicked a bit as an amused hum left him. "In fact, I bet she found him and they're on their way back now."

He hadn't missed the boy's eyes narrow and his own squinted as the kid called him 'numb nuts.' Hmph. He had a mouth on him and it made him wonder how good of a parent his dad was. Granted his mom was a pretty good parent and he supposed he had a mouth on him too. He'd also had time to get out and explore and leave the territory so there was that. Oh well. He didn't have a response to his insult so he shrugged it off. There was no glory in beating up a runt anyways.

His eyebrow raised again, there seemed to be a lot of that with Greed around, as he explained where he had gone. He'd never heard of this Isardis fellow, never heard the stories of old Glaciem and how it had been taken over and ruled by a ruthless tyrant, so he was a bit clueless. Of course if he didn't know about it how could pipsqueak have known about it either? Where'd he pick up on this information and why was he so sure his mom was coming back? He doubted she was. He hadn't even met his own father and he'd never come back. Why should Greed's parent be any different. So he just shrugged his shoulders.

"If you say so, kid."

The boy watched Kharnage for a reaction, but was dismayed when all he got was in 'if you say so.' Not even a response to his attempted insult. Ah well, maybe his dad wasn't the only one that acted like a statue. "She's comin' back. I can feel it." He said it more to himself then to Kharnage, but he was pretty damn sure about it. She had to come back. Quickly, he'd look up at Kharnage, gaze almost suspicious looking. "So, what's there to do out here anyway?" This was his first time out. Was it any different then inside the borders?

He stood up and walked past Kharn, tail in the air as he went to sniff around a tree several feet away. His gaze would find the borders, instinctively ready to hide just in case one of the adults spotted him, then he remembered he could use Kharnage as an excuse. Turning his gaze to the larger boy, he looked at him for a good moment. Debating if he should ask if he wanted to find something to do, or do it on his own. But what? He'd never been out before. "You comin'?"

Kharnage didn't argue with the boy anymore once he insisted she was coming back. He supposed it was a child's dream after all that they have both their parents in their life. He used to have hope that their father would come back, but as he got older he realized that he wasn't. Not only that, but if he did come back he couldn't imagine that he'd get a warm welcome either. He himself didn't care anymore. He'd gotten this far with barely any parenting and the lack of a father figure didn't bother him in the slightest. The kid would eventually get over his mother leaving and realize his hopes were useless.

Instead he peered back at Greed as he asked him what there was to do out here. He would shrug and he'd look out at the horizon as he thought about it. He'd been on a few adventures before and had enjoyed himself a lot more than being cooped up in Ivalice. Being confined to two territories, one which was full of a cave thing, wasn't really exciting. It was less exciting when you stared at it day in and day out.

"A lot actually. You get to meet strangers, see new things, and the continent is so big I'm sure you couldn't even explore all of it in a life time." He explained.

Blue eyes would then watch as Green picked himself up and then waltzed past him to go sniff a tree. he watched him with a curious look on his face and Kharnage found himself somewhat amused. It wasn't until Greed looked back at him that he realized he'd been staring. Ears would flick forward at the question and he'd slowly nod. "Sure, I don't see why not. Lead the way." He offered. He'd already been out of the territory a few times already so he was content to let the younger male do his own exploring. He'd just tag along to see how long it took someone to realize Greed was gone. So with that thought in mind he padded after the pup.
