Bass Destruction

This heat was not doing them any favors. The prey was scarce during the day, and their water sources were drying up. He had been watching a herd of deer move through the plains, too lazy to chase after them with the sun pounding on his back. Instead he waited it out on the top of his den until night fell. Letting his eyes adjust to the darkness around him, he followed the herd and found them grazing on the long grass in the thicket. It was a smaller herd, but there was one doe that he had had his eyes on. She was weak and tired from the heat, and moving slower than the rest. Now that it was cooler, he knew that it would be the best time to attack. Walking to the borders of the plains and the thicket, he stopped and tilted his head upwards and called for the pack. It would be a good time to get everyone's butts into gear, since still nothing had happened since the meeting. Bass was tired with being disappointed, so he tried his best to shoulder it all.

At the end of his call he sat down and waited, his yellow eyes scanning the darkness around him to see who would show up. He wasn't expecting everyone, but he hoped for at least three or four other wolves. His pale tail tapped on the ground behind him, the cooler atmosphere of the night calming his frayed nerves. Hopefully this would all go over smoothly, the deer were most likely headed towards a bigger water source.

What was that? Bass calling a hunt? Oh hell yes! The small canine abandoned his night time digging and made his way towards the thickets. His claws had clumps of dirt stuck in them, but at least it wasn't mud. With how dry it had been, there wasn't even really any mud around unless he went further down the banks of the Rapids which...he wasn't very keen on doing. It didn't take him too long to spot the cream male, crimson eyes lighting up in the dark as he approached. "Hey boss! Out for a midnight snack?" His tail swished in excitement, whiskers quivering as he looked around. He would spot the small herd of deer, large ears perking at the sound of their hooves and their grazing.

She had settled back into the pack and her scent had returned to normal. Sparrow couldn't help but wonder how Peregrine and Ricochet were doing, but now was family time. When her father called for a hunt, Sparrow didn't hesitate to answer. Despite the late hour, she had been awake enjoying the cool temperatures and walking the borders.

Coming to the clearing, Sparrow dipped her head at her father and Dart. Dart always seemed to be around and Sparrow briefly thought he might contend for alphaship. That would be funny, a fox alpha. She figured that would put the kind man in danger, however, so it probably wasn't safe.

Sitting, Sparrow took in a deep breath, "It's been hot, huh?"

The chestnut male knew the pack didn't have a lead hunter, or wolves who solely dedicated their lives to hunting at all. He supposed it was simpler that way. After all, everyone knew how to hunt - it was a basic survival skill. They needed all the focus on other field areas (ahem, fighting). Anyone could call for the hunts, if anyone could be bothered taking the initiative. There were many wolves in Abaven, surely someone else could do it?

As embarrassing as it seemed, it was the alpha himself who called for today's hunt. In the middle of the night. Not that the Prima Guardia had anything better to do. He hadn't been able to fall asleep anyway, and the thought of hunting in the night with the rest of the pack excited him the tiniest bit. It was a warm, humid night, he noticed as he made his way to the thicket. Only two other canines had arrived - Dart and the alpha's daughter, Sparrow. Not a very convenient time of the day, though he hoped more of Abaven would show up. Hello Bass," he greeted the Destruction, dipping his head to the other two politely.

Bass Destruction

Not many showed up, but more than enough to take down the exhausted and most likely dehydrated doe. Dart was the first to show up, and he wagged his tail at his question, head slowly nodding up and down. "Yeah, it's too damn hot to hunt during the day. I thought a late night hunt would be a bit of fun," he said with a grin. Sparrow was next, and he chuckled at her statement. Indeed it had been, he was worried about fires sparking up with how dry it had been. Tinaro was the last, and he dipped his head to the Prima Guardia. Good, there wasn't as many wolves as he had wanted, but it was good enough. Getting right down to business, he jutted his nose towards the small herd. "Okay, so there is a doe that I have been tracking since this afternoon, she is starting to fall behind the herd and will make an easy snack. Tinaro and Sparrow, you two go down a bit and me and Dart will corral her towards you. Dart, if you could keep the rest of the herd running, that would be great. The buck looked rather aggressive over his small group, so we have to be careful," he looked towards everyone to see if they understood before moving off.

Breaking away from the others, he led Dart back the way that he had come. The herd had moved towards the borders, and he knew that they had to hurry. Keeping his body low to the ground, he made sure that he stayed downwind from the deer. The doe that he had his eye on was only about three feet away from the others, and the buck was very vigilant. He hoped that he wouldn't be an issue, and that the fox could handle him. Nodding his head slightly, he started to trot towards the back of the doe. Once he was only a few paces off, he sprang into action and let out a sharp bark, jumping on the left side of the deer and cutting her off from the herd. He yipped loudly, nipping hard at her heels as she took off at a run. Bass kept one eye towards the buck, who was running with the other does at the moment. He could turn at any time though, and they had to be careful.

To his disappointment, he was the last to arrive. No other wolves of Abaven would show up. His brows pulled closer to form a small frown as he casually inspected his hunting group. Four was enough, he supposed. He had hunted in a trio once when he was a yearling, and they had been fairly successful. Maybe this wouldn't be as difficult as he had originally thought. Turning his attention back to Bass, the alabaster man seemed to have a clear plan set for them. Bass and Dart were to separate the doe from the herd while Sparrow and himself were to bring the deer down.

And with that, they set off. To begin with, he followed behind Bass until the herd came into view, now inching closer to the borders. His emeralds spotted the doe, lagging a few metres behind, but still within protection of the buck if it got to that. Then he split from the group, pelting upwards. He stood to the side of the herd, helping Dart to get them running by snapping and hissing at their heels. They needed to get the rest of the herd several metres away from the doe, to make an easier catch. As Bass jumped to the side of their chosen doe, she began her dash, trying to catch up with the herd. He and Sparrow just needed to corner her, lead her straight to their jaws...

Sparrow followed the group until she and Tinaro broke off to get into position. Her father moved skillfully, separating the doe from the herd. He kept an eye on the buck. Sparrow hoped the buck would decide to just count his losses for the day and let them eat without much of a fight.

The small girl readied herself to take down the doe. She wasn't all that big, but she was confident with Tinaro and her father by her side... well, her father wasn't really by her side, but he would be helping them take down the doe while Dart kept the herd running.

Crouching, Sparrow shot Tinaro a glance, nodding once when the doe was close. It was time.

Dart nodded with Bass' response, a wide grin splitting his lips. He hadn't hunted with Bass in...well, he couldn't exactly remember. A long time, that was for damn sure! He missed spending time with his beloved friend, though Bass was more of a brother to him than anyone. He was his first friend since the first day he'd come here, and even now years later they were still buddies. That was something he cherished. He'd turn his attention to Bass' daughter as she came towards them, followed shortly by Tinaro. They'd wait a bit longer, but nobody else would show. It was a little disheartening, but at least the four of them would surely be able to handle whatever Bass wanted to hunt. And sure enough, it would be considering their target.

He would nod after confirming their target before moving off. While the others moved into position, he would follow Bass, keeping low to the ground. Though that was considerably easier for him since he was a lot smaller then the majority (if not all) of the wolves he lived with. Dart was very aware of the buck, though he felt confident enough to be able to get away in the event it decided to turn on him. He was nimble enough, and if he could get away from the tyranny of his father all those years ago, then he had no doubts that he could handle a prey animal. As soon as the others were in position, Dart would get into motion. He chased after the rest of the herd, keeping them moving as he darted around behind them, herding them like a collie herding a flock of sheep. He kept a watchful eye on the buck, ready to alert the others or move out of the way should it decide to turn on them.

Bass Destruction

Dart was going a fine job of keeping the rest of the herd moving, and the doe was cut off completely from her herd now. He snapped at her heels, his tail fanning out behind him to help keep his balance. He drove her closer to Sparrow and Tinaro, his jaws snapping over and over. He latched onto her left back leg, chomping down and holding for as long as he could. Stopping in his tracks he tried to slow down the deer, pulling his head back and lifting her leg upwards. She kicked it free, aiming to swiftly kick the alpha in the head. He veered to the left, but her hoof clipped his cheek. Shaking his head, he didn’t let bruising slow him down. Under the light of the moon, they would down this deer.

Not giving up so easily, he drove back over and bit down on her leg again. This time he sunk his teeth right into her tendon, and when she kicked free her leg was open and bleeding freely. There was an obvious limp in her step, and he knew that they would have her soon.
