He found himself in the desert today, a place he had never been to and so far, it wasn't too bad. It was early enough that it wasn't very hot yet, and the colors of dawn always looked fascinating to him. He appreciated the way the sky always looked, always shifting colors when night gave way to dawn and when the day gave way to dusk. This morning, he decided to hunt early, and he wondered what he might find out here.
Sand shifted beneath his paws as he walked, the dual toned male wondering how so much sand came to fill the deserts. Snow was one thing, as far as he knew it was cold enough that it fell from the sky and just kind of stayed there. But this? It was pretty different to him. Focused on the way the sand shifted beneath his feet, he almost missed the sound of goats nearby. Head shot up, audits swiveling to locate the direction the sound was coming from. He followed it, and soon he found them. Standing on top of the dune with the goats several yards below him, he watched and studied them. He hadn't seen too many goats before, his usual prey being rabbits and smaller game. Things he could usually hunt by himself. He wondered briefly if goats might be one such thing he could take down on his own, but when he caught sight of a rather large male with horns that looked like spears, he thought better of it. |
Once he had done a few rounds at the border and notified someone in the pack he had decided to take a bit of time away. His heart was still heavy with the disappearance of Stardust. He was ill with the fact something horrible may have happened to her. Despite his efforts he was never able to find her trail and it was like she disappeared into thin air. It made him vary uneasy and he had even found himself unable to sleep in their den. So he needed to get away and to hopefully clear his mind, he had a job to do and right now he needed to put that first in his life. He was growing older and he was still unable to just sit around and do nothing.
His long legs carried him across the sands, his movements remaining fairly swift for his age. His nose was in the air testing for scents on the wind, looking for a potential hunt. Hunting always seemed to be something to get his mind off things and he felt that it would hopefully make him feel better. The scent of goat was on the wind and when his nose caught it a small grin appeared on his face. It was fresh and it was strong telling him that there should be plenty to pick from. He quietly ambled in the direction until the figures came into view on top of a sand dune. He crouched down slowly and watched them, eyes looking over every goat he could physically see. He then looked out further to see if any other goats were around, but instead he spied another wolf to his left looking at the same goat herd.
Would the other be up for a joint hunt? It wouldn't hurt to see at least. He slunk in that direction, keeping quiet so that he wouldn't spook the herd. They were to close for him to let the other know of his presence so Frost would just have to wait until he was up beside the other. It took him a couple of minutes because he would stop each time one of the goats looked in his direction, not wanting to be spotted so easily. When he finally made it to the other male a sense of familiarity struck him, but he pushed it aside, wanting to focus on the hunt.
"You up for a joint effort to split the prize," he asked, his deep vocals low as his eyes focused on the herd.

Ears moved atop his crown, taking in the sounds of the goats nearby. Focused on watching them, he didn't notice the approach of the large male until he was already beside him. He jumped a bit with surprise, bi-colored gaze watching the other male. Gah! He really needed to remember to be aware of the rest of his surroundings. That was usually his problem, so focused on the potential hunt that he often forgot other predators could be around.
He regained his composure, a grin lifting each corner of his mouth. "Of course! Breakfast sounds good right about now," He mused. His attention returned to the goats, wondering which one they should go after. The large male with the big horns made him wary, and he didn't know how these particular creatures acted when they were attacked. Smelling the air again, he noticed the pack scent on the larger male, and he wondered what pack he was from. Cloud wasn't familiar with the other packs of the lands, save for Abaven. "Which one do you think we should go after?" |
His eyes watched the younger male as his grin started to appear. A smile appeared on his own face as he spoke agreeing to his offer. This made him happy cause he could put all his focus into a hunt and have better luck getting a decent meal with two wolves working together. His eyes turned back to the goats, looking to each individual one looking for a good target for the two. Even with two wolves he still didn't think going after the billy was a real good idea. He wouldn't even look at the billy. He scanned and he scanned until his eyes landed on a nanny with a vary slight limp.
His eyes fallowed the female goat watching her move, something was up with one of her legs and she would defiantly move much slower then everyone else. He leaned over to the younger male and used his front left paw to point towards the goat.
"That one looks like the best choice. Do you wanna get the herd running or cut out and take down the nanny?" he replied.

He waited, attention pulled between the larger wolf and their potential meal. Bi-colored gaze moved between them, though sometimes lingered longer on the small herd as he tried to figure out which one to go for. The billy seemed tempting, it was the largest of course and so it would provide more meat. But the horns could probably be dangerous, and he didn't particularly feel like getting any severe injuries in the middle of the desert.
When be returned his attention to the brown male, he found him leaning in and pointing towards a female goat, which with a more focused look, Cloud could see her limping slightly. Ears flicked at the other males words, gaze remaining on the one they singled out. "I can cut her from the herd. I've never hunted goats on my own before, though I imagine it's similar to hunting deer just...smaller." He mused. Glancing at Frost again, he offered a sheepish grin before getting up and moving forward, stalking his way quietly towards the herd.
Sand shifted beneath his paws, making a bit difficult to move gracefully, but at least it wasn't as slippery as the ice back in the North. He moved slowly, biding his time and waited for the perfect moment.
Finally, when most of the herd had turned their backs, he shot off like a rocket and began to give chase. The goats bleated with fear, some running off in confusion for a moment before joining the main herd. The nanny they were after remained on the far side of the group, but she was already falling behind. Focused, Cloud kept his gaze on her as he gained speed, barreling through the back of the group as he sought to cut her off. Herding her away, he kept her from returning to the others as he chased her, jaws snapping the air near her legs. |
The younger male agreed with his pick and also wanted to be the one to cut her from the herd, this meant Frost would be doing the take down. His tail lightly wagged, getting excited for this hunt just like he always did when hunting. It seemed to be the only time you would see that youthful spark in his eyes.
"Pretty much, they are surefooted and know how to move quick," he answered the male back before he began to move towards the herd.
Frost waited until there was distance between then before he angled himself towards the left side of Cloud, keeping back and waiting for him to get the ball rolling. He watched as the male waited for his perfect moment before getting the herd going. Once the herd started going Frost made his slower advance, hanging back to let Cloud do what he needed to do. The goats were fairly obnoxious with their bleating, but he focused on the one that would be cut from the herd. Once Cloud had cut the nanny off Frost took off in a run, to catch up.
Shifting his path and he headed straight for the Nanny's left side. Once close he made a sharp left turn throwing his body parallel to her before Flipping his head to the right and snapping his jaws around her throat and taking a grip.

They had managed to cut her off from the rest. His heart pounded from the thrill of the hunt, and he always felt more alive then ever in moments like this. From the corner of his eye, he saw the brown male closing in on the nanny goat until her loud bleating was suddenly cut off. As the other male gripped her throat, Cloud went in and grabbed her by her left hind leg. He could hear the crack of bone as his jaws closed over the appendage, and soon enough, he had practically broken the entire leg and nearly ripped it from the socket as he collided into her hind end.
He shook his head vigorously, and in his excitement, he had sort of tripped over his own feet and the flailings goats feet until he ended up on her other side, leg still clutched firmly in his jaws. The audible crack and squelch could be heard as he took the leg with him, causing it to become doubled over her back in the strangest angle he had ever seen. Oops. He didn't mean to do that, but he supposed it didn't matter now. They had their catch, and he was proud that he had been able to hunt with someone else. "We got her!" He exclaimed, tail beating the ground as he waited for the other male to finish up his work. |
