flowers for algernon

Indigo was very obviously not of usual pelt color, he was the most vibrant of his siblings and more so the pack. Maybe it was because of his own color but the young boy found himself attracted to the bright colors of summer flowers and plants. The tall grass plains were home to many species of flowers and herbs, and he was determined to collect a bouquet for him momma.
Dark paws carried him around the front yard of the den, he was grounded so not really allowed to go far without permission but his mother knew that pups energy was better spent outside than inside driving her crazy. Four unruly children would quickly drive one crazy in a confined space. The boy was on the trail of a nice pink reddish flower right now, later he would learn that the root was the best part of the plant. He wanted to bring the whole thing back though, roots, stem and flower.

Az was enjoying his freedom more then he had any right to, especially when he considered that Indy and Asla were grounded. He still didn't quite see what the punishment was, after all his siblings were still allowed to play outside away from the den. Perhaps mother was going easy on them since they were all still so little. Az considered it, and then decided to hold that piece of information and try it out in the future. To see exactly how far he could push before the excuse 'he's just a puppy' would no longer work. He came upon his brother on the way back to the den, clumsily moving up behind him to peer over his shoulder at the flowers he was messing with. "Whatcha doin'?" The boy asked with a curious tilt of his head.

Indigo had almost completely disreguarded the grounding, he still didn’t quite understand the implications but he’d known his mother was upset about his an Asla’s first adventure. Maybe that was why he was trying to gather her some flowers now, to try and make up for his harrowing adventure. As he was contemplating his flower picking another presence would make him look away to find his clumsy brother in his line of view. He adored all of his siblings but he felt a special connection to Az, the two of them had particular trouble keeping their paws under control. However much Indy had to admit that the other boy maybe had it worse.
”Picking flowers.” He said simply as his vibrant blue gaze was returned to his activity. ”I want to give them to momma.” Indigo explained as he put paw to earth and pulled back the first layer of dirt with sharp kitty claws. Unbeknownst to him he was getting at the most valuable part of the Valerian plant. ”What are you doin?” Indy returned the question with a quick sideways glance at his sibling.

Each of Azure's siblings had their own odd quirks, Asla enjoyed peering up at the night sky and exploring the world. Indy liked flowers and plants. Mort was the one who seemed most similar to him, interested in chasing rabbits and biting tails. Regardless of their differences Azure simply adored them all. It was because of his love for them that he tried to appear accepting of their odd hobbies, and with as much interest as he could muster he prodded further. "That one's kind of pretty, I guess." He complimented as Indy dug up the dirt below it. "Why you want flowers? There's lots in the garden." He didn't want to dismiss his brother's hobby, but didn't understand why they needed even more flowers when the territory already held a gazillion gardens.

Indy loved his family deeply, but he felt very different from all of them too. Already his feelings of being the outcast were beginning to take root. He liked his alone time just as much as time spent with his siblings. He felt like he was quieter than the rest of them too, even if wrestling was his favorite game. Still, he’d taken more interest in the flora than fauna.
His brother offered his observation, it was indeed a pretty flower. Indigo decided he was very fond of the brightly colored plants. ”Because they’re pretty.” He stated obviously, though he sounded quite proud of Azure’s compliment. ”Mom deserves pretty things.” There wasn’t a wolf yet that hadn’t called he and his siblings some form of aesthetic compliment. Surely he’d elicit the same response if he gave his mother pretty flowers. ”The ones in the garden don’t be long to me.” He explained, ”they’re for other things… not gifts to Momma.” He wasn’t sure what other things, but it wasn’t that.

Azure looked thoughtful, considering what his brother had said. Well, then what were the other flowers for? It didn't make sense. Flowers were there to look pretty, for little girls to put behind their ear. To pounce and chew on if you got bored. Though he was still trying hard to understand his brother's hobby, and kept thinking on how he could contribute until he had an idea. "There are really really tall flowers outside the den." He began, remembering all the times they'd run past the bright yellow sunflowers when they exited home. "Mom said dad put them there for her. So those flowers must be for giving to mom, too." Indy's flower was pretty, but it was small. Bigger was better, right? Azure thought for sure his mother would rather have a towering flower then the teeny ones Indy was picking. "Maybe you can pick some of those and have lots of colors to give her."

Indigo finished collecting his very first plant, the Valerian would be useful to any healer than knew half a lick. The pup didn’t know what to call it, didn’t know what it might do if he ate any of it. Though the many healers in the pack had already rid the most accessible poisonous plants the boy still didn’t know any better.
His brother’s idea perked his interest, what if he gave her the big flowers outside the den? Surely if they brought those inside for the bouquet his mother would be even more impressed with his gift. Indy had planned a few more wildflowers, but maybe one big and the plant he’d just collected would do the trick. ”That’s not a bad idea, Az.” Indy mused as he admired the plants he’d just harvested. ”Alright, now the big one.”
Indigo led the way back to the den a few quick strides. The sunflowers were easy enough to spot, after he put his valerian down he tried to decide which one was the biggest. After a moment of thought the boy chose and approached the flower to stunt all other flowers.

Azure was pleased that his brother thought his idea a good one, and as the boys moved back towards the den he observed the sunflowers carefully alongside Indigo. While they were all tall, some of them were taller than others. It didn't take long for Indy to pick out the perfect one, and Azure helpfully moved up to it to wrap his bear paws around it's stem so that when Indy cut it, that it wouldn't collapse and hit the ground hard enough to wreck it. He still saw nothing special about flowers, but if it made his brother happy than it made him happy, too. "Here I got it, now you gotta chew through it. Think your teeth are sharp enough?" The stem was massive, the size of a small tree branch. If it was as tough as one, he worried Indigo would never be able to gift the huge thing to their mother without destroying the flower in the process.

Az moved forward to stead the huge flower as they were about to bring it down. Indigo felt good that they could work so well together, his brother went to exactly the place he wanted him. However, his words didn’t quite line up to what Indy had planned. He couldn’t just chew through the stem! He had to give it to their mother whole. ”I’m gonna dig it up.” The vivid colored boy explained as his paws got to work. Like his valerian plant the sunflower was going to his mom roots and all. Eventually he’d learn the best parts of each plant but for now the best way to show his love was to bring everything.
Though his teeth were getting big, even his puppy canines were much longer than the average puppy. Once his adult teeth started coming in he’d get jaw aches and eventually grow an impressive set of saber like teeth. ”I don’t think my teeth are good enough yet. Do you think I’ll have fangs like Dad?” He asked as he continued to dig and hoped Azure kept his paws steady.

Azure's ears fell slightly as his brother explained to him that he was not to chew the thing. A part of him was embarrassed that he didn't know very much about gathering flowers, and then another part didn't care because gathering flowers was Indy's hobby anyways. Regardless, he shrugged and continued to hold the plant still. "OK, good luck!" He'd done enough digging to know that beneath the dirt was a huge expanse of roots, and with all these sunflowers in one space it might be difficult for his brother to pick out the individual he wanted to uproot. Of course he wouldn't say it aloud, as he was trying to be as supportive as possible. When the boy asked about his teeth, Azure murmured a noncommittal noise. "Maybe. I hope we all do. Sometimes my mouth hurts, does yours?" He asked as Indy worked. So far it seemed everywhere he was destined to grow a mutation was aching and sore, and perhaps if Indy shared similar pains then that could be proof that something more than tiny teeth were growing in his gums.

What Indy saw as obvious was not so much in his brother’s mind or eyes. Still, the young purple pup was appreciative of his brother’s support. He felt close to his sibling even if he had no real interest the boy was here. They were together, and Indy felt like he was doing something good. He was going to make their momma smile. The dirt was indeed filled with roots, but while his teeth weren’t impressive yet his claws were incredibly sharp. They sliced through the roots easily and before long Indigo had a beautiful root ball beneath his sunflower tree.
Azure didn’t give him a yes or no about his teeth, but he did tell him his own experiences. Indy’s dark ears fell to his skull as he moved to help his brother lower the now freed plant fully to the ground. ”No, not really.” His toes or paws never hurt either. He was going to hold onto hope that he was just a late bloomer. ”Maybe I won’t grow them..” He mused with self defeating tones.

Azure felt the plant shift and move as Indy worked beneath it, but still he held it still best he could with his wide paws. He wasn't sure when the boy would declare his work done, but didn't want to let go too early and ruin all his effort. His legs were starting to ache from the strain of holding himself upright against the plant that wasn't exactly weight-bearing, but he could manage a while longer... he hoped. At his brother's response, Azure frowned. If his teeth weren't hurting, maybe that meant he wouldn't grow fangs like dad. Everyone he'd complained about his pains to had told him it was because of growth, and so the absence of pain must be the absence of growth. He bit his lip, eyes wandering as he thought on what he could say. "Well, you're really... thick. Fluffy, y'know?" After a moment, he realized it wasn't really a compliment and he'd interrupted his train of thought before finishing his sentence. "I mean, it's gotta be good for protection. Like bears have thick fat and fur? It protects. Rabbits have small thin fur, and our teeth can pierce them easy." He wasn't sure if it was getting across correctly - most of his focus was going towards not falling over while holding the sunflower - but damn he was trying.

The sunflower looked amazing and Indigo couldn’t have been more proud of it. Even as he tilted it on its side to the ground it was impressive. Their mom was going to be so impressed. Despite what they were talking about Indy knew he needed to thank his brother. ”I appreciate your help with my project.” He told him honestly, and did wear a grin even if his teeth didn’t hurt.
Indy didn’t really see how Azure’s next words were supposed to make him feel better. ”Thanks.. I guess.” He was the biggest around of all four of them and the heaviest of the bunch too. His thick neck didn’t help anything, Az continued clumsily but Indy wasn’t blind to all the effort his sibling was going through. ”It’s okay, Az.” He tried to convince him. ”We’re all different. I’ll just be more like mom.” Who he loved just as much as their dad even if he was already nearing the point he couldn’t look up to her in a literal sense.

As Indy helped move the sunflower down onto the ground, Azure let out a relieved exhale and plopped his limbs down too. His helpful words didn't seem too helpful, and although his brother thanked him and tried to be accepting of his potential disability (because to Az, being born without extras was definitely a disability) he still felt bad that he couldn't lift his spirits. "What 'bout your feet?" He moved towards his brother, lifting one bear paw to place it down upon Indy's foot. He'd found already with his dad that if he pushed at the right place, that claws would slide out from hiding. Azure was more then sure that he'd never inherit those paws - his were already weird enough - perhaps Indy had. His assurance that he was going to be okay, and that he'd only be more like mom didn't make Az feel better. He wanted his siblings fierce and strong like dad, the one he looked up to the most.

They didn’t hold the same views about ‘extras’ but that just made them more unique. Despite their similarities in appearance all three brothers were vastly different from one another. Azure pointed out his toes, and if he was learning to use anything well it was his claws. He already used them to shred the sunflower’s roots. there were many more applications that they could be used in. Fighting primarily.
Azure seemed to already know the trick, and as pressure was placed on his joint his toes slid from their sheaths to reveal his incredible black claws. Just like he was his toes were huge and the claws looked nearly over sized for his body that had yet to catch up. ”I got Dad’s claws.” He offered with Mirth as Az was finally able to put a smile on his brother’s face.

Az gave an affirmative "ah-ha!" as the boy's claws peeked out from their sheaths, moving his paw away so that he could see his brothers. "Dad's claws are the best." He said with a smile. "He can even climb trees! So I bet that one day you can climb trees too, and then you can pick blossoms from high up to add to your bouquets and beat all the other gatherers with style." Competition was already a driving factor for the boy, and it was natural for him to think of a use for the blessing that involved beating others - even if it was winning in something as leisurely as flower-picking. "I hope I can climb trees one day too, I don't have dads paws or moms paws." He frowned down at his wide feet, flexing his muscles so that his claws dug into the dirt. Oh well, he'd tried not to be too upset by them. It could be worse, he could have no gifts at all. Changing the subject abruptly, he looked back to the sunflower. "How you gonna get it to her?" He asked. Azure did not intend on barging in on his brother's thoughtful gift, had no desire to be included when it came to giving the flowers to mother. However the sunflower was taller then even Indy was, it'd be hard to carry back into the den without wrecking it. "Maybe I can tie it to your back with something, so you can walk in and the flower won't hit the ceiling or walls." He was already looking around for something to use as a tie.

Azure was a good cheerleader, he didn’t give up until he could bring a smile to his brother’s jaws. Indy was a little disappointed that he wouldn’t ever have his impressive fangs like his father, but he could be happy with his sharp claws. Azure went a step further, he told him that he’d be able to climb trees to get his flowers, and the thought excited the boy. There weren’t many trees in the tall grass plains, but now he was eager to find some trees to ascend. Knowing that his brother felt envy for his ability made Indy feel bittersweet. He wanted to share the experience with his brother.
”Your claws are so much bigger than mine though. Maybe you can climb too.” He switched positions with his sibling, now Indy was trying to build Az up. They didn’t linger on their physical attributes much longer, now it was time to figure out how to get momma her flowers. Since he associated his own bright colors with the flowers Azure’s words gave Indigo quite the idea.
”What if I’m part of the bouquet?” He asked excitedly, if Az tied the flowers to him, he could be a flower as well. Indigo would love to give himself to his mom, surely the gift would mean even more. He’d get a huge smile from his momma! ”Will you tie them?” He asked with ears perked and grin playing on his dark features. There had to be some long grass around here somewhere so his brother could tie the stems to his neck. He’d put the valerian at his throat and the sunflower on top of his massive head.

The boys turned out to be a good team, and Azure was finding himself enjoying his brother's company more than he'd anticipated. After all, they weren't doing anything fun and interesting together and were only playing with flowers. Indigo's assurance that he might be able to climb trees too made Az smile wider, and he hoped that one day he could be alongside Indy in his tree helping him collect the beautiful high-up blossoms. Indy latched onto the idea to tie the flower to him, suggesting they make him a part of the bouquet. Azure thought it sounded perfect, and couldn't help the excitement bubbling up inside him. Luckily his father had shown him how to tie knots when he taught him about trapping rabbits, and so Az went off looking for a long tall piece of grass that would be strong enough to hold the sunflower. He wasn't certain of the strength of one piece of grass, though much like he and his siblings he knew they'd be stronger together. He snipped off multiple pieces with his teeth, returning to Indigo with a mouth full. "OK, hold still." Az told his brother, grasping the stem of the sunflower carefully in his teeth and pulling hard to drag it onto his brother's back. The pedals hit Indigo in the face a couple times, but luckily did not fall off and after a few careful ties around his tummy, neck, and tail he had the stem secure on his brother's back. "Where d'you want the other one?" He asked, and then he frowned. "is it enough to just have two flowers and you?" Azure knew nothing of bouquets.

Indigo loved his brother but never expected to work so well with him. They bounced ideas off one another and kept each other engaged. They encouraged one another even when there was so much about them that was different. They complimented each other in their differences instead of opposing. After a little bit of work and quick thinking Azure was commiting to attaching the giant flower to the giant puppy.
He did as he was told, and before long Azure had secured the sunflower to Indigo’s back. He felt proud of himself in those few moments before his brother spoke again. Doubt seeped in but he tried to hide it. ”Under my chin,” he answered first. ”Well, it’s one really big flower.” He tried to explain. ”It counts for a lot of flowers right?” Now he wasn’t nearly as sure of his plan.

Azure read the doubt on his brother's face and quickly panicked, having only just managed to make him feel better. "No you're right." He agreed quickly, forcing a wide happy smile. "If you have too many flowers than you can't see the really good ones!" He grasped the smaller flower and moved to tuck it under his brother's chin. He couldn't slide the stem into the grass already present at his neck to hold the sunflower, because the root still dangled in a ball at the base of the flower. Instead he held it there with his nose, lifted his bear paws around his brother's neck like a hug and looped the grass around it. After enough effort it was loosely tied, and Azure stepped back to admire his handiwork. "You're the most beautiful flower!" He complimented, his tail thumping hard against the ground as he sat. "Gotta go show momma now, she'll love it."
