Food for Fire
Armada Task/Natha

Though she wasn't necessarily excited about being entered in some odd contest, Resin would go along with it as an example for the younger members of the pack. It was a show of unity. She could support that. Thankfully she had been paired with Natha. The cat had a decent disposition and Resin wasn't sure that she was in the mood for anyone seriously bubbly today. Having borrowed Iolaire's cart, the powerful lady pulled it to the orchard. The last time that she was here, she remembered there being quite a few dead trees, smothered by the roots of their brethren. "We should be able to find decently dried wood here. Once we fill the cart, I can pull it back," she cast her golden gaze towards the feline. No doubt Natha could help shred trees with her claws. Resin brought her own just in case. Wiggling out of the harness, Resin moved forward to the nearest dead tree. Teeth latched into one low, dry branch. She pulled it free with a loud snap and placed it on the ground beside her. They would need a lot to fill the cart. |

Natha stalked after Resin, off to the woman's right to make sure she stayed out of the way of the cart. It seemed a rather useful contraption and she was glad they wouldn't have to be hauling wood back to the Armada piece by piece.
Natha nodded at Resin's words. "Yes, thankfully it hasn't snowed lately and the sun's been out in the day to dry the forests. I'll see what pieces of kindling and starter wood I can get from the branches." She eyed a few nearby trees, focusing in on a tree that had a few cracked branches, likely from a storm that had moved through the area a week or so ago.
Natha's legs coiled beneath her and she leapt elegantly up onto the tree. She scooted her way toward the broken branch and using her claws and her teeth she pried it loose. It crashed down to the ground. Natha then moved on toward the other branch. She'd take a few down then haul them into the cart.

Natha thanked the lack of snow and Resin released a rumble of agreement. This task would have been much more difficult with a thick layer of snow on everything. Plus the wood would be damp. She too was thankful for the decent weather.
Piece after piece was pulled from the dead tree. She shredded it as well as she was able with teeth and claws. The black and grey woman was glad to have chosen the orchard for this task. From her experience, the wood of fruit trees burned sweet and fragrant. A nice change from your standard bonfire smell.
Now that the extremities of the tree had been stripped, Resin moved up to the trunk and began digging at it with her curved steel claws. The tree wasn't terribly thick, so when she had it partially dug through, the big woman pushed hard, toppling the remainder of the tree. Once prone, she used her claws and her weight once more to shred it into sizeable chunks.

Natha slid over to the other broken branch. Balancing carefully, her little tail twitching as she moved, Natha leaned over and used her fangs and claws to work her way through the wood until at last the branch fell. Broken branches in a nearby tree caught her attention and she leapt over to begin working there before she gathered her full crop.
She grinned. "I have to say I like Armada's fire. That will be nice on these cooler nights." She could be tempted just to curl up near the fire and sleep under the stars if it weren't for the piece of grizzly bear hide warming her den.

Taking up the various pieces of wood that the pair had compiled, Resin began stacking then in the wagon. Ears perked as Natha spoke of the big firepit in the main area of the territory. The scarred woman gave a rumble of agreement. "My daughter built that. Very smart, Iolaire." She had built the foundation with her teachings, but her daughter had surpassed everything that she would have hoped for her.
Putting the last bit of wood up into the wagon, Resin went back to the area where Natha had thrown branches to the ground and began collecting them as well. She put them into the cart and then decided to just pull the whole cart to the tree. Sliding her head through the harness loop, she put her weight into it and soon had the wheels rolling. She stopped beside the tree that Natha was now working in and added the wood there to the cart as well.

Natha continued her work, slicing through branch after broken branch. The trees had been weakened by the volcano during the previous winter and that had left the vulnerable to this winter's storms. There was no shortage of branches. She finished snipping the ones out of the tree she was in then bounded down out of the tree.
Natha landed gracefully and moved to put a few of the remaining branches in the cart. They'd done a good job and it was nearly full. She grinned. "I think that looks good."
