Busy Wolf, Lazy Cat

Mæva trotted back to the prairie with a nice, relatively straight branch in her jaws. She'd decided she wanted to make a nice spear to keep on hand so she could try it with some fishing as well as fighting. She'd happened to run into yet another member of the Ashen Armada who she was surprised to find was a lynx. The only other animals she'd seen in wolf packs were companions of the wolves but this lynx said she wasn't anyone companion. Settling on the western border of the prairie where the cat was sun-bathing Mæva set the branch between her paws. "Found my branch!"

Natha lazily opened an eye at the cheerful chirp of the girl she'd run into while she had been hunting rabbits. She'd caught a snowshoe hair and filled her belly when she saw the girl hunting for sticks to make a spear for fishing. They'd struck up a conversation but it was hard for Natha to focus on much. The sun was shining, she had a full belly, now all she needed was a nap. Natha yawned. "Congratulations." She stretched out so her spotted belly could better catch the sunlight. Many creatures didn't like winter but with her large paws and thick winter pelt she was well suited to living in colder weather.

Mæva secured the stick between her paws and eyed it for a moment as she tried to remember what Sparhawk had told her about creating a spear. Ok, well, first she needed to strip off all these excess branches. Taking the smaller branches in her jaws she started stripping them off one by one, pausing for a moment to eye Natha who was laying in the sun and not doing anything. She couldn't imagine just laying there like that but she wasn't a cat. She knew Geira liked to do the same. It had to be a cat thing. Mæva chewed through another small off shoot, pausing for a moment to spit out the bark that accumulated in her mouth. She wrinkled her nose as she felt some of it get stuck in her teeth. Mæva wished there was an easier way to do this.

From her upside down world Natha watched the clouds lazily float by before her eyes turned to the horizon and she watched for the movement of predators and prey alike. So far it was mostly a herd of bison moving through. They weren't terribly bothered by the presence of a pup and a lynx who offered little threat. She turned to look at the girl then rolled over onto her belly. Standing up she shook out her coat and started to groom herself, pausing just long enough to ask a question. "So, I've heard you ran into quite a few wolves of the Armada. Do you often hang around Armada territory?" Not that she thought the pup was a threat necessarily, but it was interesting that the girl ran into so many Armada members. Natha wasn't quite sure how she felt about loners hunting so close to Armada territory but then perhaps that was expected with winter.

Mæva seized the last offshoot in her jaws and pulled back, peeling it off and leaving a reasonably smooth branch to craft into a spear. Well, reasonably smooth might have been a bit generous. It was still pretty bumpy but she felt she could still handle it well enough. Mæva moved to one end and used her jaws to start shaving off some of the wood, just to get a rough shape started. After that she padded over to a nearby rock and started running the tip along it to sharpen the spear. She looked over at the lynx and shrugged. "I think everyone just likes to hunt in the prairie. It's some of the best unclaimed hunting lands in this region. She'd met most of the Armada wolves hunting around here and well, that's where she'd met Natha too.

Natha watched the girl work on her spear. Natha didn't care much for crafting weaponry of a lengthy sort. She was a creature suited to close combat and thats how she preferred to keep it. The cat chuckled at the girls answer and nodded. Yes, she supposed that made sense, after all she'd run into the girl as she was finishing up a hunt of her own. Not that she needed to travel really. The plains of the Armada provided plenty of food but every so often she just felt the need to wander and the prairie was a decent stop in her travels to rest and refuel. Natha stretched slowly, eyes turning northward. Well, she'd socialized enough, it was time to go.
