Big Meanie Head
Úlfr's mouth turned into a pout as he stared at the water. He'd managed to sweet talk his way into going walking with Valdís but then his new momma told him to stay put while she hunted. Why did mom's always tell pups to stay put? He supposed he shouldn't whine too much. Valdís at least let him come this far with her and believed he would need to start training now to be a good warrior and hunter but he thought that meant he could do the actual hunting. What was there to do staring at a river?
Ohhhh fish? He could catch a stupid fish! Bounding out from under the brush where Valdís had tucked him away he scampered to the shore of the river and started pacing along it. It looked awful deep. He wasn't paying to much attention until the birds suddenly stopped singing. It was way to quiet. Just as he looked up he saw a coyote approaching him. It licked its lips. Úlfr froze.

After Magnus had taken him to the Rio Grande to fish and subsequently found a tiger instead of learning to fish, Mortis had been curious to try. The fast moving river called to him, and he finished his duties and patrols, and made his excuses. Running off to explore on his own.
He hadn’t expected to find a tiny pup, or the last coyote from the group that had tried to steal his and Mag’s meat. He froze, watching the coyote lick its lips and eye up the small child. A pup in his own right, but a giant of a wolf, Mortis came running into the scene. “Oye, scat!’ he yelled, raising his wings in an attempt to scare the coyote off.
The coyote bared down on him and he growled, fur instinctively standing on end as his tail tucked and his ears went back. Úlfr stood up as tall as he could, trying to intimidate the coyote but being so young it wasn't impressive enough to sway the coyote. It took another step closer and he growled louder.
"Oye, scat!"
Úlfr stared, slack jawed at the winged wolf that had appeared. He wasn't the only one. The coyote suddenly shuffled back, startled at the strange creature that was heading towards it. However, as it took in the strange form the coyote realized that the creature was also only a pup. It dived for the newcomer and Úflr yelled. "Look out!"

The pup had hoped to scare it from the very young wolf with his surprise appearance. It seemed he would not be so lucky, as the coyote now zeroed in on him, and doved. The pup tried on his best Warlord-growl, letting it vibrate through his chest, as he took the dive head on. The two collided, and despite being a pup, Mortis was bigger than the creature.
It changed direction last second, and slid past him. Mort tried to grab at it, but it was smaller than he was. Its new path was taking it towards the pup. Perhaps it hoped to take the easier prey, or use the pup to stop Mort’s attack. He didn’t know, but he wasn't going to let the little guy get hurt.
Wings flaring on either side of him like large, dark waves, the boy jumped after the coyote. “Roll to the side!” he yelled to the boy, hoping he could get out of the way of the coyote.
Úlfr crouched down, trying to hide his pale form against the yellowed grasses as he watched the coyote and the other pup battle it out. "Yea, get him!" Úlfr cheered on his rescuer but realized too late that he'd made the situation worse. The coyote focused on him and charged forward. Úlfr barely had time to utter an oops before he heeded the larger boys call and rolled out of the way, just in time to avoid the coyotes jaws. Nimbly Úlfr leapt to his feet and dove into a, thankfully empty, badger hole. The coyote tried to follow but its shoulders got stuck.
"Ha! Serves you right you big meanie head!"

The pup rolled to the side at his request, and tucked safety into a badger hole. The coyote couldn’t reach him there, and had to choose between digging the boy out, or facing the threat. It turned to Mortis at the same time the young boy came careening into him. He knocked the coyote off its feet. Now that it didn’t have its biggest advantage - speed - Mortis had him.
As he had many coyotes in his young life, he pinned it tightly to the earth, and dragged his dire fangs across its neck, effectively ripping it out. As the creature fell limp and lifeless at his feet, he padded closer to the pup, and peered down the hole. “You need a hand getting out?”
The winged wolf slammed into the coyote, sending it flying. Úlfr let out another cheer. He didn't see the actual kill but he soon smelt the blood. The young pup had seen a lot in his short life span and wasn't terribly disturbed by the smell of another predator's blood. The winged boy asked if he needed help and he shook his head. "Nope, I can get it, just a second."
His head popped out of the badger hole, stained with dirt and dust. With a bit more wriggling he popped right out and shook out his coat. "Thanks for saving me!"
At that moment he heard Valdís howl and a look of dismay spread across his face. "Oh no, my new mom. I said I'd stay put. Thankyoubyebesafe!" He scrambled as quick as his legs would carry him toward her call.
