Rush of Evening

Halla stalked through the gulley, the light from day starting to fade as the sun neared the horizon. She was on the hunt for dinner when in the distance she heard the haunting cry of an elk not far off. Well, that was definitely an option if she could find one young enough. When she went to investigate she spied a small herd bedding down for the night at the edge of the gulley. She crouched down in the brush watching them, her keen eyes sweeping over the heard as she searched for any sign of weakness. There were some young elk yes but her attention immediately went to an injured bully. It stumbled as it moved to lay down and it was missing half of its rack. Battle wounds perhaps? Or had it fallen some how? She wasn't sure but it was definitely a decent target. Still, she would not be able to take a full grown bull herself, wounded or not. "Talk" |

Aslatiel had heard the call of the elk as well. It had initially been her intent to craft some sort of trap to kill one, but, as she neared the clearing where the herd rested, she came upon the forms of other wolves. They seemed to be discussing the same thing that she had in mind. Coming upon the wolves, the cream and grey girl kept her voice low. She didn't know them at all, but perhaps they would be able to work together. "Are we hunting?" The young woman flashed a smile, tall ears perking. She was trying to be more personable, so this would be decent practice in both hunting and socializing. "Speech" |

Wyndelin kept to the south during hunting trips, satisfying both his need to travel and his duties to his pack. This time however, he was hunting more to feed himself. He intended to bring some meat back to the pack but that would depend on the size of the prey he took down. He certainly wasn't above scavenging if the opportunity presented itself. Speaking of opportunity… Wyndelin smelled the air, brow furrowing at the smell of elk blood. Perhaps he was about to get lucky. Wyndelin stalked toward the source of the scent and when he arrived he spied Halla and two other wolves he wasn't familiar with. "May I join?" "Talk" |

Halla turned at the sound of approaching movement to see a young male who asked if he could join. She nodded. She wouldn't say no to more help when it came to an adult elk. Not far behind him was a small yearling and then a face she recognized, Wyndelin. "Yes, you're all welcome to join me. There is an injured bull in that herd down there. He's limping and is missing half his rack. With our numbers we should be able to take him down." She looked to Star and the yearling. "Would you two be able to startle the herd and get them running? The bull should start to fall behind." She looked to Wyndelin. "Wyndelin, if you can make sure its cut off from the herd then we can all move in and finish it. Whoever has good access to the throat should go for it." She didn't want to plan to far ahead in case the whole thing went to hel. "Talk" |

It seemed as though it would be four of them. Good. The more bodies, the easier the hunt would be. Asla listened as the woman laid out the plan. She could follow plans. No problem. The young wolf nodded in agreement. She would be a runner. Fantastic. Asla was quite fast. Her small stature allowed her to cut and dive with the best of them. She was quick, she could change directions with the wind. Looking to the other wolf that would be running the herd with her, the girl shot them a dazzling smile before giving a pull of her shoulder, motioning for them to follow. They should move behind the herd and prepare to run them toward the other two that would be laying in wait. The other wolf rushed before her and Aslatiel laughed aloud before darting right out on their heels. She rushed the herd, jaws snapping audibly behind them as the beasts got to their feet and began to run. "Speech" |

Wyndelin listened carefully to the plan and nodded. It sounded as good as any to him and there wasn't much point in deciding anything to concrete. He started stalking forward, lingering behind the other two, with Halla following close behind him. When the yearling and black and white male charged the herd, Wyndelin dove after them. He kept his focus on the bull through the chaos of the panicked herd. As he saw it starting to move off he slipped to the side and started running along next to the bull. It wasn't moving well, that much was clear. It's gait was strange and it was clear the lopsided antler was affecting its neck. Wyndelin snapped his jaws seeking to herd the elk back around toward Halla as he separated it from the rest of the herd. "Talk" |

Halla crept carefully forward, aware that her pale coat could cause issue if she didn't keep her body low to the ground. She let the others start the hunt and when all three were racing forward she leapt toward the bull. As Wyndelin cut it off she put on a burst of speed, watching the way the elk moved carefully. There, she determined what part of the issue was. Something had happened to the achilles tendon in the bull's left hind leg. The lower part of the leg didn't seem to be supporting weight and it flopped and moved oddly. Halla moved closer, keeping an eye on the elk's movement and then, syncing her timing she snatched the injured limb and pulled back sharply. At that moment the elk stumbled, its front legs folding beneath it as it fell to its chest. "Talk" |

Aslatiel continued to run. She cut through the herd, her presence alone pushing the various elk aside from their target. The strong pushed ahead while the weak fell behind. An old doe was almost as slow as the injured buck, but one bite to its haunch sent it spiraling away. Then only the intended prey was in sight. The others all pulled their weight well. Purple eyes shifted to keep her hunting mates within sight. It was good to know where they were. You had to be prepared for anything during a hunt. Putting on a little burst of speed, Asla bit into the heel of the one-antlered elk. It's running pulled her forward, but she'd done a bit of damage. Soon the leader of the hunt bit into the injured heel and the bull tumbled, slamming hard onto its chest. Another body was on its back, so Asla did what she could. Sliding around the side, the girl slammed her weight into the side of the elk's neck, trying to slam it prone onto the ground and hopefully jamming its antlers into the earth beneath. "Speech" |

Wyndelin eyed the elk as he ran and soon enough the bull was separated out from the rest of the herd. He whirled back, following the yearling as one by one the wolves attacked the bull. He circled around and as the yearling slammed the elks neck into the ground he darted forward, head low. His fangs wrapped around the elks throat. It bleated and struggled to rise but with three other wolves on it as well as an injured leg it just couldn't manage. Wyndelin held on until the last of its life was spent. Once it was gone he let go and grinned at the others. "Good work everyone." That was as smooth a hunt as he could hope and they had plenty of meat to feed all the wolves that were present. "Talk" |
