It seemed that every day they all grew a little bigger, a little stronger—although Aoife seemed to be reaching her limit already. Their lessons in all things manners and pack etiquette were a daily ritual, expanding upon what they already knew, and their parents were natural teachers, with Regulus adding to the rich education.
Being involved in the fights at the festival had bolstered Ardyn’s desire to learn and be the best fighter he could be—is was expected of him, regardless. Morning settled warm in the horizon, brightening the sky as he trotted through the ravine, back from practicing his tracking and aware of Loshir’s presence fading as he passed into the safety of the ravine and the cave mouth.
Occasionally, he noticed that his mother’s mountain lion guardian left for several days before returning. He often wondered where the cat went, and his mother seemed not to know, either.
Ardyn shrugged the thought away and took up a stance on the soft sand floor of the wide point in the ravine, where it opened to let a little more of the sunlight light in through the vines that crisscrossed above them, well above even Nolan’s head height. Ardyn would have to stack two of Nolan, or maybe even two of Ulric to be able to reach those vines. It was just outside the cave mouth and its three natural stone steps.
He practiced with his stance, testing his maneuvers, how to move in a strafing, side stepping walk as though circling an opponent.

Ardyn at first glance is as black as can be imagined with a raven sheen.
Closer inspection proves that he shimmers in fire tones in every hair on his hide right down to his lashes.
More obviously, he glows like a bed of coals and flames with every movement and brush of fur. His tail is usually wagging, so blazes like a torch.
His adult teeth are in and his saber canines have grown to their full length (see profile). His mane and tail hair have grown to full length, as well as being lightweight and easily buffeted by breezes.
A look at his front paws will give the impression of hands, with his dew claw dropped low and lengthened into a functioning thumb, and his toes elongated into fingers. He has retractable, solid black cat-like claws on every paw.
Ardyn has developed a glowing mast of intricate markings in fire and ice colors over his face, symmetrical over the last seasons of Year 17 (see profile for details). During hunts or raids/sieges, he will smudge them out with black soot to cover the glow, otherwise, they are bright enough to note at first direct glance at his face. Not all his artwork currently portrays the mask markings.
He is also often bedecked in beads, small bells, feathers in blues, ribbons and braids thanks to the Ooze Event of Halloween 2021, and the Coathanger item that he got. The accessories generally are seen most in his mane and tail hair. He removes the brighter items and bells for hunts or battle.
Cooperative
Coran had spent the earlier part of the morning watching other wolves at their jobs, not idly but to try and learn a bit of what they did, and to just know some of them better. He would ask questions when it felt he could do so without getting in the way. He might ask healers about the herbs they used and asked a guard about a piece of armor and how it worked. He wanted to know everyone in the pack better as well.

Coran’s voice pulled him from his concentration, and he grinned at the invitation. “Sure! Winner gets dibs on the next moose!”
He leapt for his cream and white brother with a ‘Yah!’ of joy, aiming to wrap his forelegs around Coran’s shoulders, hoping to grip his brother’s fur in his nimble paw-hands for stability and knock him over with his initial pounce.
His jaws parted and aimed to chomp shut on Coran’s left ear for a tug, tail blazing in the air.
The overall movements were the clumsy endeavors one would expect of a big puppy his age, but over the seasons, there was no doubt he’d improve and become a force to be reckoned with.
Since this was practice, he was careful to keep his claws sheathed, growling fiercely.

Coran might of vocalized his agreement with the bet but Ardyn wasn’t wasting any time. Coran met the charge head on, leaping up as he didn’t account for how Ardyn was already growing larger than Coran. As the brindle pup felt himself losing balance he shifted his weight sideways to hopefully at least throw Ardyn off balance as well and make sure they both went down. |

Mama often said that surprising advantages could be found from below. Ardyn hadn’t intended to go sprawling, but as Coran went down Ardyn tumbled after and chose to roll and attempt to wrap his brother’s shoulders in a hug, aiming a bunny kick toward Coran’s belly, though he kept his claws in and the kick light—he didn’t wanna hurt his brother if he landed the kick.
He sought to tug playfully at Coran’s ear before letting go and snapping his jaws at Coran’s in hopes for driving back his smaller brother’s pale muzzle as he growled, tail fire-branding in a rapid tattoo against the ground, sending sand flailing.
His coat was ablaze with all the action, and giggles fought their way through the growls, making rather odd ‘Grrrhrrhrrheehehee’s with a few snorts involved.

Haha! Ardyn was down too! Coran was feeling pretty good about that, right until he realized Ardyn was able to get his paws around him. Coran tried to pull away but was having a hard time of it so was bringing his own legs up to try and shove off when they met with Ardyn’s feet. Coran bicycle kicked with his own back feet to try and get around Ardyn’s to give him a good kick. Not easily breaking free from Ardyn’s grip the paler coated pup did what any self-respecting puppy would do and bit whatever was in range, which right now seemed to be the base of one of Ardyn’s ears. |
