5 Pounds of Possum in my Headlights Tonight

Gossamer bounded out of the den as autumn light spilled across the horizon. It was a windy day but the sun was shining bright and warm. Ásta was off in her own den so Gossamer immediately set out to finding her companion so they could go looking for more cool plants. That was her original plan anyway. However, it wasn't long before she got sidetracked when she saw something big and ugly waddling away with scraps from their meal last night. She immediately frizzed up. It looked like a giant rat. Her eyes narrowed as she stalked toward the creature that didn't seem terribly concerned with her presence. Of course the wind was in her favor though she didn't know it. Gossamer wasn't sure what to do with the thing but she didn't like how it was stealing their leftovers. Maybe they ought to teach it a lesson.

It was difficult keeping track of where all of her sisters, and brother, had gotten off to. Everyone was just so busy and unless she sought them out herself Ophie often felt like they didn't have time for her. Maybe they didn't think she was as fun as the rest. She galloped along, eager to find someone-anyone- and was soon met by the sight of Gos who looked very big and poofy, her fur standing all on end. Ophie broke out into a big toothy grin as she rushed to her side and slapped her paws down, mimicking her posture and floof levels like a miniature shadow. And then, only then, did she notice the ugly rat thingy that laid ahead. No doubt the subject of Gos' stink eye and ire.
"Uhhh was'that?!" Her words rushed out in a hurried stream, all excitement and tomboyish enthusiasm, and before her sister could even respond she acted out on impulse and launched herself forward in attack mode. Get 'em!
Her kitty claws unsheathed themselves as she went to whap it across the nose. Was Gos proud of her? Did she think that Ophie was fast and strong? She really really really really really really really really hoped so.

Gossamer's ears flicked back as she spied her sister Ophelia. The smaller girl raced over join her fanged sister and frizzed up immediately at seeing the possum. She asked what it was and Gossamer shrugged. "I don't know. I think its a giant rat. Anyway, it's stealing our scraps! It shouldn't be stealing from the Armada." Ophelia suddenly launched herself forward to attack and Gossamer joined in. As her sister moved to swat it in the face Gossamer nipped it in the butt. The possum hissed and puffed up. "Go away!" She yipped at the possum. She didn't know if it could understand her. It seemed that only a few non-wolves could speak the common tongue of wolves and considering the blank look the creature was giving her she assumed it had no idea what she was saying. Either way it didn't seem overly bothered by the pups.

Ophie wouldn't have been nearly as brave if her sister hadn't been by her side. In her mind Ophie imagined herself-and her sister, of course- to be a mighty warrior, more than enough to show the ratty creature who was boss. But reality wasn't quite as exciting as that. The creature didn't seem all that fussed really and easily stepped out of the way, causing Ophie to whiff so hard she lost her footing and tripped, falling onto her pudgy puppy tummy. She landed with a muffled ooof, her limbs splayed flat as she laid there for a moment and watched Gos go to nip the possum on the butt. Having been on the receiving end of her sister's sabers the possum ought to leave, if it knew what was good for it!
Scrambling to her paws, Ophie gritted her teeth and let out the meanest, most rumbly growl she could muster. In her mind she sounded like a beast, like her great Da who was so fierce and powerful that it'd only take one look of his send the possum running for its life. Again, reality wasn't quite what she envisioned. She leapt forward again, teeth snapping as she mimicked her sisters attack, going for the rump with a tactical nip.

Gossamer joined in as her sister growled. She tried to growl too, as low and scary as she could, just like her dad! The possum hissed in response and started to waddle lazily away. That wasn't quite the fearful response she was wanting. It should be terrified to ever step foot in Armada again! As her sister darted forward for the possum's butt so did Gossamer and this time she bit down hard, sabers breaking skin. Some weird sound erupted from the possum and it bolted forward, spinning around and glaring at the pups. It had dropped the scrap of food and now puffed up even larger. It seemed torn between fighting the pups, just leaving or maybe playing dead and seeing if they just went away. Gossamer spied the scrap of food and she darted forward, catching it in her jaws and then bounding back toward her sister. She was pretty sure she could out run that fat rat thing any day!

The pair of them were unstoppable! Gos chomped at the beast with her pointy teeth and Ophie reached out to give it a slap with her kitty claws. Blood was spilled and it made Ophie's nose wrinkle as a sense of uncertainty settled in her bones, maybe they were pushing this a little too far. She only wanted to chase the creature off, not hurt it! But when she looked to her big sister for guidance Gos showed no signs of letting up, if anything she pushed on and snatched the meat it had just dropped- the spoils of war. In a way it was only fair, they were reclaiming what was rightfully theirs but maybe the creature needed the food more than they did. Maybe it was hungry, or had a family who was in dire need of a meal.
Her hesitation stretched on as the opossum puffed up and stomped forward in a charge, causing Ophie to skitter back as she belatedly realised her sister was already well on her way out of here. Oops! Ophie squeaked in alarm as she broke out into a sprint, soon catching up with her sister as their little paws thundered against the earth. Fatalis' 1 - Opossum 0.
