Dagrún bounded back toward the fire with a good solid stick in her mouth. Today Sperla was going to teach her to make something called an axe out of wood and bone and she couldn't wait to get started. The bird had already gotten a good fire going. She set her stick down. "Ok, Sperla, I've got a good stick, come see!" The kestrel flew over to her and lighted on a nearby stone to inspect the stick. "Looks good! Now take care of some of those extra branches and such and it will be ready to work with."

Dagrún nodded. With her tail wagging she set her teeth to remove a few of the excess branches from the stick that would eventually become an axe handle.

Now that he had an atlatl dart it was time to make the atlatl itself. Kári had seen a deer shed over in the Orchard and he was off to get it, hopefully before anyone else did. When he arrived at the Orchard he made a beeline for the deer shed and picked it up with greedy jaws. He was just about to take it back to Habari when he noticed smoke rising not far from where he was. Curious, he headed toward the fire and saw the Fireside girl… sitting beside her fire. He chuckled to himself as he set the antler shed down. "Hey there! Is it ok if I join you?" He honestly planned to join whether she wanted him there or not. He was down for a spar if she was up for it.

Dagrún looked up at the sound of someone approaching and saw the boy she'd met some time back. He also was fond of making things. She grinned. "Sure, go ahead. What are you making today? I'm gonna make an axe." She beamed proudly as she showed off her now smooth stick.

"Ok, go ahead and chew a notch in the top that we can slip the blade into." Dagrún nodded and worked her teeth into the tip of the stick to cut a notch into it. It was a bit of a shallow notch but with the help of Sperla's talons and tools they got it done.

"Alright, now that you have the handle made you need to make the blade for the axe." Dag nodded and grabbed the piece of shoulder blade she was going to turn into, well, a blade. She first chewed on it to refine the shape the started scraping the bone on a piece of granite to chip off even smaller pieces and refine it into a more blade like shape.

"Great, I'm making something fancy called an atlatl." It sounded cool and difficult though Kári assured him it wasn't too bad. Áskell grabbed the antler and set it down between his paws before turning his attention to his magpie.

"Ok, you'll want to keep this part, the longest tine. The rest have to go." Áskell was very tempted to complain about doing all that chewing but he still wanted to look cool in front of the Fireside girl so he bent his head and got to work chewing on the antlers. He worked until he had all the extra tines mostly removed except for the main one which he was informed would hold the dart so that it could be thrown. Áskell stared at it unsure of how exactly he was going to throw this thing.

Dagrún cocked her head at the boy, very sure he'd just made up that word. Well, whatever it was, her axe was going to be cooler. She finished the bone blade then looked back to Sperla for the next step, eyeing the bowl of pine pitch the bird had near the fire. "Ok, now we add pine pitch to the notch then slip the blade in and wait for it to dry."

Dagrún grinned, she liked this part. She still thought it would be fun to see what would happen if she threw the sticky pitch in someone's fur. She picked up the stick of pitch that was sitting in the bowl. The heat had already made it sticky so she positioned the axe handle between her paws and carefully dabbed some pitch in the notch. Setting the pitch back in the bowl she picked up the bone blade and with Sperla's help pushed it into the notch and set it out to dry.

Áskell showed off his atlatl to his magpie companion and the bird examined it for a moment before giving him further instructions. "Ok, take a look at the base of the antler, you want to chew in a notch to hold the dart." Áskell steadied the antler with his paws and using his canines he started chewing a notch, looking to his companion to decide how deep it should be. He had to admit that he was starting to get tired of all this chewing but he was also eager to complete his project. Right now what the girl was making looked cooler and he still wanted to show off what he knew and how cool the atlatl was. Right now it just looked like something he'd been chewing on. However, he soon had a notch for the dart. Now the really question, how did one throw a dart with an atlatl?
